It is all about people not machines. Therefore we had a bit of a giggle when we read a quote in a paper recently about a hotel in California that has introduced Robot Butlers to “free up staff time and allow them to focus on serving guests”. Anyone else get the irony in that quote?
The role of the hotel robot butler is to deliver amenities to guests and it also meets and greets guest and ask them how they enjoy their stay and says goodbye to them.
We watched the robots in action and it did look rather fun and cute and we would enjoy it as a novelty - but wouldn’t call it service by our standards.
The same can be said for all these ghastly phone systems that torture us for ages if you want 1 press 3 if you want 4 listen to this awful message for 3 minutes and then press 2 and if you want 2 provide us with your date of birth, last bank account details and phone password and then press 6 at which point you will discover that your call is very important to us and therefore we will put you in a 15 minute queue until we speak to you and cut you off after 12 minutes so you can start again.
We don’t call that service either!
