Delhi is one of the world’s great cities; with a colourful history going back more than a thousand years. A city which was captured, broken down and re-built several times, has been an important centre of politics as the capital of several empires. The British established New Delhi when they moved the government from Calcutta in the 1930’s. Designed by Edward Lutyens, it is a characterised by wide boulevards, elegant bungalows and such landmarks as India Gate and Connaught Place.

Old Delhi was the capital of the mighty Mughal Empire, where you’ll find many of Delhi’s historic sites, like the Red Fort, the seat of Mughal power, with its mighty red sandstone Lahore Gate, and the Jama Masjid, built in 1656 by Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built the Taj Mahal), still one of the world’s largest and most beautiful examples of mosque architecture.

In Nizamuddin you can see the ancient Tomb of Emperor Humayan, famous for its perfect symmetry and beauty. Commune with Delhi’s magnificent past while wandering through the Mehrauli Architectural Park, where you’ll see such glorious 12th century monuments as the legendary Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Monument built in 1193, it remains the tallest tower in India.

Apart from these key sights, there are many other places of interest like Lotus Temple, Akshardham Temple and hidden jewels like Agrasen ki Baoli (Baoli is a stepwell) which can be explored, if you can spare more time.  Take time out to stroll in Lodi Gardens, a favourite green refuge from the frenetic city pace, with its rose gardens, romantic ruins and cool, shaded pathways.

Delhi is fascinating, complex and exciting. It is also fun, friendly and engaging. Delhi being the capital of India is the hotbed of Indian politics and a wonderful place to visit.
