Borneo – 9 Day Unique Experience Including the Secluded Danum Valley - is currently on backorder. You may still purchase now though and we'll ship as soon as more become available.

Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu via Sukau and the Danum Valley: 9 days

Experience the wonders of Borneo, including the world renowned Danum Valley, on this 9 day unique adventure.

If you want to see the very best of the wildlife wonderland that Borneo has to offerthis tour covers it all. North Sabah is a conservation hot spot and not to be missed.

See orang-utans in Sepilok, take part in a turtle breeding program on Selingan Island, travel to Sukau and Abai on the Kinabatangan River and travel to the Danum Valley, the oldest primary rainforest in the world. A world renowned research centre that is home to cloud leopards, orang-utans, long nosed monkeys and a seemingly endless list of flora and fauna. Explore this ancient rainforest with canopy walks, jungle treks and soak it up in the luxurious rainforest lodge.

Why is the 9 Day Tour so much more expensive than the 8 Day Tour?
Our 8 Day Wildlife Wonderland Tour is very similar to this 9 Day tour, however the increase in price is substantial for the 9 Days. This is because the 9 Day Tour includes 2 nights at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the secluded Danum Valley. The Danum Valley is not on the tourist route and visiting here is a rather special experience.

This is a Small Group Tour with your own guide, driver and generally a maximum of 10 people (often less). If you would like to make this tour a Private Tour, please contact us for a quote. We also offer Tailor Made Tours to Borneo.

* Price includes 8 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 21 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights to Borneo.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Borneo are approximately $750-$1000 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Sandakan, Sabah

Arrive at Sandakan airport where you will be met by your tour guide and transferred to the MY Nature Resort. Located in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, the eco-friendly resort is a great place to start your Borneo adventure. Enjoy the boardwalk that winds through the forest and the incredible wonder of nature on offer. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight: MY Nature Resort (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2: Explore Sandakan including the Australian War Memorial

Today take a city tour of Sandakan that includes Sim Sim Water Village and the War Memorial. Sandakan was home to a Prisoner of War camp during World War II. The War Memorial provides an excellent account of this history.

Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure in Sepilok and at the resort. You may wish to make use of the swimming pool, explore the surrounding forest with the boardwalk or take the free shuttle bus to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre.

Overnight: MY Nature Resort (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 3: Travel to Selingan Island to take part in a turtle breeding program

After breakfast you will be taken to the Sandakan jetty for a boat ride to Selingan Island (a 1-hour boat ride from the mainland). This is one of 3 islands in the Turtle Islands National Marine Park and is home to one of the world's most successful turtle breeding programs. You can spend the day at leisure swimming and snorkelling and enjoying the small island. After dinner the turtle activities begin and you will have the opportunity to witness the magical experience of the green turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs (accompanied by a ranger). You can also participate in the breeding program with transferring the eggs to the hatchery and releasing newly hatched baby turtles in the sea. A magical experience :)

Please note: The focus of Selingan Island is conservation. The island is open to a limited number of tourists each day. Early bookings are recommended. During July and August, bookings fill up very quickly. The accommodation provided is basic but comfortable, consisting of simple chalets with ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Please bring an overnight bag with you, as you may not be able to take all of your luggage with you on the boat to Selingan Island. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. Your luggage will be stored securely in the offices of the tour operator and you can collect the following morning when you return to Sandakan.

Overnight: Selingan Island Chalet (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Orang-utans, sun bears and cruise the Kinabatangan River to Abai

After breakfast you will return to Sandakan on the mainland. From here you will be driven to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center (SORC), where orphaned orang-utans are raised to be released back into the wild. It is a great place to see the "man of the forest" – the literal translation of orang-utan. The SORC has a dedicated team to look after these gorgeous creatures. There is a boardwalk that runs through the centre where you can see the orang-utans in their natural environment. Feeding time is 10am where you can watch the orang-utans come for their morning tea of bananas, and if the nursery is open, view what you could call an orang-utan kindergarten!

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center is just across the road from the SORC. This is the home of rescued sun bears who are lovingly cared for by another team of devoted animal lovers. It is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world and has received the attention of National Geographic.

At 11am, depart Sepilok and travel back to Sandakan where you will take a one-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River - pass through pristine mangrove forests keeping an eye out for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle River Lodge and have lunch.

Abai is a secluded location on the Kinabatangan River in the forest reserve. Explore the trails that run through the surrounding jungle and make use of the bird watching tower. The area is home to a huge amount of wildlife including monkeys, orang-utans, birds and much more.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a river cruise to search for wildlife. As night falls, witness the glittering of the fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner and after dinner take a guided night walk around the lodge.

Overnight: Abai Jungle Lodge (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: River cruising, wildlife spotting, village life and travel to Sukau

Take an early morning river cruise on the Kinabatangan River to the nearby Pitas Lake to view more birds and wildlife. Come back to the resort for breakfast and then visit the nearby Abai village. Enjoy a local-style lunch prepared by the villagers and then cruise up river to Sukau

Check-in to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and in the late afternoon, take another river cruise including on the Menanggul River (keep an eye out for the proboscis long-nosed monkey). Return to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight: Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Arrive in the Danum Valley – the oldest untouched rainforest in the world

After breakfast depart the lodge at 7am and proceed overland to Lahad Datu. Arrive at the Borneo Nature Tours office, register and have a briefing on the activities and facilities at Danum Valley. At 9.30am depart for the scheduled transfer (2 hours) to Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley. Attend a brief orientation before lunch.

In the afternoon, depart for a guided walk on a nature trail (400m boardwalk circuit) and the 300m canopy walkway. In the evening, have dinner at the lodge. If weather permits, enjoy a night drive in search of nocturnal animals.

Overnight: Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Standard Room (Standard option); Deluxe Room (deluxe option)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Explore the Danum Valley with jungle trekking

The mornings are famously misty in the Danum Valley and are a spectacular sight. Spend the day exploring the rainforest with more opportunities to spot birds and wildlife. The Danum valley is home to more than 290 species of birds which is more than half the bird's species of all of Borneo.

After breakfast, depart for a trek along the "Coffin Trail: through the rich forest to the ancient Kadazandusun burial site. It’s a 3km return trip, involving a 40-minute climb to a magnificent lookout point. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon go on another jungle trek in search of wildlife or opt for a relaxing session of tubing down the Danum River. After dinner, depart for a night walk in search of nocturnal creatures.

Overnight: Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Standard Room (Standard option); Deluxe Room (deluxe option)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: A leisurely morning in the rainforest, fly to Kota Kinabalu

Spend a leisurely morning enjoying the luxuries of the lodge or explore more of the jungle on one of the many jungle trails. After lunch you will be transferred to Lahad Datu for an afternoon flight to Kota Kinabalu.

Your tour guide will be at the airport to meet you and transfer you to your hotel.

PLEASE NOTEThe flight from Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu is NOT included. You can either book this directly (with Malaysian Airlines) or book it as part of your international flights to and from Borneo. We don’t include it because the price varies too much depending on dates. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like a quote for flights.

Overnight: Hyatt Regency Kinabalu - City View Room  (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

Enjoy breakfast at the resort and you will be collected and transferred to the airport in time for your flight home or onto your next adventure.

How to get there:
This tour starts in Sandakan and ends in Kota Kinabalu, both part of Malaysia.

(Borneo is the name of the island and the island is composed of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. This Travelbay tour is in the Malaysian part of Borneo).

Flights to Sandakan go via Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Please note: If you have a stopover in Kuala Lumpur, from here you will be taking a domestic flight to Sandakan or Kota Kinabalu. Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur are all part of the country Malaysia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Currency information:
The currency used in Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

      Thanking you

Hi Travelbay. We touched down in Sydney a few days ago, fresh from our Borneo trip and reminiscing with fond memories of our jungle experience. We experienced some great wildlife encounters, consisting of orang-utans, snakes, lots of monkeys, turtles and a very large croc. The transitions to various points and accommodation went very smoothly and the guides and all staff were superb. Thanking you for all the organisation at your end; we really enjoyed our Borneo adventure 😀 🐢 🐊 🐒

      Unforgettable experience

Dear Fiona, Nikki, the Travelbay team

My 10 year old son has a keen interest in wildlife, and wanted to experience the jungle. Well we have recently returned from the most incredible 2 week adventure to Borneo, where all his wildest dreams came true! The jungle was lush and rich, teaming with life, and very beautiful!

We had some unforgettable experiences, seeing orang-utans and Proboscis Monkeys in the wild, among so many other creatures of all kinds.....flying squirrels, frogs, owls, rhinoceros beetles, fireflies, even a herd of pygmy elephants. At every turn there was something different to marvel at.

Not only was the wildlife remarkable, but our accommodation was really lovely and provided a great place to retreat after busy days in the tropical heat. Danum Valley, and the Borneo Rain forest Lodge were a highlight. Thank you for recommending this area! Who could be disappointed to wake up with primary forest, millions of years old, clouded in mist, directly outside your front door?

The local team of guides and drivers were always professional. They were knowledgeable, educational and personable. We want to sincerely thank them for their passionate work! Some went over and above, to try and please.

Thank you Travelbay for organising everything for us. You were splendid.

We would not hesitate to recommend you to any of our friends or family. Hope to book again with you in the future.

The accommodation was wonderful. We were blown away with the friendliness of the people. Nothing was a problem. We will definitely recommend Borneo and your company to others.
