Start your adventure with a visit to the morning Phosi Market, considered the biggest market in Luang Prabang. See diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin and local tea among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can enjoy the cooling freshness and leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall. On the way, pass through rice fields and small villages dotted along the country roads.

Head back to Luang Prabang for some sightseeing in the Old Town including Vat Xieng Thong, perhaps the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang and Wat Sene known as one of the most beautiful.

In the late afternoon, in time for sunset, climb to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa where you can enjoy views of the city and Mekong River (please note: there are around 329 steps to reach the top). On the way back to the hotel, stop at the well known Night Markets, a great place for shopping and local cuisine.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: LAOS - Visit the Pak Ou Caves and local villages

This morning, after breakfast visit the Royal Palace (also the National Museum) before being transferred to the pier for a boat cruise upstream to the Pak Ou Caves. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Arrive at the caves that consist of two large caves - both home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from centimetres to two metres in height.

On your way back to Luang Prabang, stop at Ban Xang Hai village. Learn how they make traditional Lao rice whisky and get the chance to sample its unique flavour. Head to Ban Xang Khong village famous for its hand-made Jute Sar paper and Lao silk weaving before being taken back to your hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: VIETNAM - A day of leisure and a flight to Hanoi

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 5: VIETNAM - Hanoi sightseeing and street food tour

Enjoy a morning walking tour through the vibrant Hang Be Market, nestled in the heart of the Old Quarter. Your driver and guide will then take you to Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda of its kind in Hanoi, dating back to the 6th century. From here visit the Temple of Literature, the first University of Vietnam. After lunch take a tour of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Mondays and Fridays).

In the late afternoon you will be collected from your hotel and your guide will take you on a walking street food tour in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour.  It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow streets inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 6: VIETNAM - Depart Hanoi to cruise the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay

This morning at around 8am your cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Ha Long Bay.

On arrival in Ha Long Bay, board your junk boat and begin your cruise of the Bay. Thousands of limestone islands rise from the water and the scenery and atmosphere is rather impressive. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove and an enjoyable visit to one of the many hidden grottoes beneath towering cliffs.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. You will be leaving from and returning to the same hotel in Hanoi where you can safely store your remaining luggage.

Overnight in Ha Long Bay: Oriental Sails - Deluxe cabin or Lavender Cruise – Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Huong Hai Sealife - Suite (4 Star); Athena Luxury Cruise - Athena Executive Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7: VIETNAM - Enjoy Ha Long Bay then fly to Ho Chi Minh City

After breakfast enjoy swimming, sunbathing and relax amongst the scenic wonders of Ha Long Bay. After lunch return to Hanoi and be taken to the airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival in Ho Chi Minh City you will be met and taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Le Duy Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Premier Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Majestic Saigon - Colonial Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Early Light Breakfast (around 6.30/7.00 am) and Brunch (around 9.30 am)

Day 8: VIETNAM - City tour of Ho Chi Minh City

Please note: You can start todays tour in the morning at 8:00 AM or in the afternoon at 2:00 PM.

Either time you choose, you will be collected by your guide to set off on a sightseeing tour of the former capital of French Indochina. Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral and the General Post Office, taking you back in time to the French colonial days gone by.

Continue along Dong Khoi Street stopping at some of the City's most notable landmarks including the Peoples’ Committee Building, the Opera House and the historical Reunification Palace, also known as Independence Palace - famous for where the war ended in Vietnam in 1975.

Later head to the Chinese District of Cho Lon as well as the Binh Tay Market before returning to your hotel where you can either rest or continue to explore the city at your own pace.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Le Duy Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Premier Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Majestic Saigon - Colonial Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9: VIETNAM - Visit the Mekong Delta

Today you will be collected from your hotel and driven to the Ben Tre province, also known as the land of coconut, in the Mekong Delta. The drive is around 2 hours and on arrival in Ben Tre you can explore coconut workshops and the art of mat weaving in local houses. You can relax in the village or wander around observing the locals go about their daily life.

When it is time for lunch, board a Xe Loi - a kind of motorised rickshaw and be taken to a riverside restaurant. After lunch you can either relax at the restaurant or take a bike ride around the lovely countryside. Then take a trip in a sampan through the canals and visit the local Ben Tre market before your transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 10: CAMBODIA - Travel to Siem Reap – the gateway to Angkor Wat

Today you are free at leisure until it is time for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. On arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Siem Reap is the gateway to the temples of Angkor Wat and with world class dining, shopping and spas, there is much to explore.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La'Niche D'Angkor Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star), Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star), Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: CAMBODIA - Full Day tour of the majesty and magic of Angkor Wat

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups). Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples. Accompanied by your guide, enter from East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions. The tour also visits the Royal EnclosurePhimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The hotel staff can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La'Niche D'Angkor Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star), Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star), Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 12: CAMBODIA - More temples of Angkor

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples and were the ones Nikki and Nicola most enjoyed on their visit in March 2019.

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Overnight in Siem Reap: La'Niche D'Angkor Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star), Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star), Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Travelbay South East Asia Tours - 13 Day Indochina Map

How to get there:
This tour starts in Luang Prabang, Laos and ends in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Currency information:
The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip, in Vietnam the Vietnamese Dong and in Cambodia the Cambodian Riel.

In Cambodia, the USD is widely accepted.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

From our personal experience, in Vietnam we found the best exchange rate was on taking AUD into a bank and exchanging for dong. Please keep in mind that banks are closed on weekends.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Safety tips:
Please remember to take care of yourself and your belongings at all times when travelling. We recommend using an over the shoulder bag /handbag with a zip to keep your belongings safe and secure.

When in Phnom Penh please be extra alert as when we (Nikki and Nicola) visited, our tour guide and driver informed us there had been a few incidences of tourists having their mobile phones snatched whilst in the street taking photos – also good not to flash your wallet about. None of our customers have had any issues to date and neither did we. We do have the extra protection of the drivers and guides – however still good to always stay alert and sensible!

Extra travel tips:
When visiting temples and palaces (including Angkor Wat) you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Take extra water, especially on visits to the temples. It is hot in Cambodia and whilst your tour guide will have some water for you in the car, it is likely you will need more than one small bottle.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Dry season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October

Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Laos.

The New Year (Pi Mai) is celebrated from April 13 – 16 and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and there are many water activities on the street. Many people travel home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended.

Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons.

Please note April can be very hot. The rains come in May which tends to cool things down. In August, September and October the rains can be heavy during the day

    Dry season: November to May
    Wet season: June to October
Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Cambodia.

Population: 6.9 million (Laos); 93.5 million (Vietnam) and 15.15 million (Cambodia)

Language: Lao (closely related to Thai) / Vietnamese / Khmer

Predominant religion: Buddhism (Laos & Cambodia) / No religion (Vietnam)

    Some interesting facts:
Laos was once called Lan Xang which translates to "kingdom of a million elephants".

Laos has been conquered by the Thai, the French and the Japanese. It gained its independence in 1949 from the French.

Laos has been labelled the most bombed country in the world. It is estimated that during the Vietnam war, more than all the bombs dropped on Europe during World War II were dropped in Laos.

Luang Prabang has a curfew of 11.30pm. All businesses are required to be closed by this time except for the bowling alley.

The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

It is hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has had spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

If you hold a passport for a country to which you are travelling, you may be obliged to produce that passport on entering the country. Accordingly, you could be obliged to carry more than one passport when travelling overseas. You should make your own enquiries in relation to your specific circumstances and requirements.
      • It is your responsibility to ensure that all your details are recorded correctly. Any request for a name change after documents have been issued may incur amendment fees or result in the original booking being cancelled and in the case of airlines, the loss of a seat.
      • When purchasing flights, cruises and other carriage and travel services, the name on the passport must match the name on the ticket otherwise you may not be able to travel and insurance may be invalid. If, after purchasing products or services but before traveling, any member of your party changes their name you must notify the relevant carrier, or us, immediately so that the necessary changes can be made to your documentation. You may incur a fee.
      • Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information. For those of you who have any medical conditions please also ensure you are fit to travel and have all the medication you need with you. Recommended inoculations for travel may change and you should consult your doctor for current recommendations before you depart. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all health entry requirements, obtain recommended inoculations, take all recommended medication, and follow all medical advice in relation to your trip.
      • Many but not all suppliers have facilities for people who require assistance. If you have any disabilities or require special assistance, please let us know at the time of booking so we can check if suitable services are available.

For Australian travellers, information on conditions in various countries and the level of risk associated with travel to particular international destinations can be found on the Australian Government's travel advisory and consular assistance service website currently located at For travellers from other countries we recommend you check the travel recommendations of your country.
