Xian - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi - Kashgar - Urumqi - Xian : 12 Days

Discover the Ancient Silk Road in China - a route that once connected the East and West, where more than silk was traded - culture and religion were a big part of the trade and this is evident today.

Begin in Xian home to the Terracotta Warriors, fly to the Gobi Desert and to the far West of China including Dunhuang, Turpan Urumqi and Kashgar. See Buddhist grottoes, singing sand dunes, caves, ornate mosques, desert towns, heavenly lake, lively bazaars, a very old mummy and much more!

This is a Private Tour where you will have your own guide, driver and private vehicle - a luxurious way to enjoy this holiday to somewhere slightly different.

Please note: We offer departures for this tour from April to late September. The winter months (October to March) are cold and we do not offer regular departures during this time. If you would like us to quote for travel during these months please let us know.

Day 1: Arrival in Xian

Upon your arrival at Xian airport, your local guide will be there to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free at your own leisure.

Overnight in Xi'an: Mercure Xian on Renmin Square - Classic Room (3 Star); Grand Noble Hotel Xian - Noble Club Floor Room (4 Star)

Day 2: The amazing Terracotta Warriors

In the morning visit the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site discovered in 1974. Here you'll see over 6,000 life-size Qin Dynasty-era terracotta soldiers, chariots and horses, an army designed to protect Qin Shihuang, China's first emperor, in the afterlife. It is considered one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world.

In the afternoon, visit the Muslim Quarter - a lively area known for its food stalls and where you can see Islam thriving in China. A visit here is highly recommended and much fun!

Overnight in Xi'an: Mercure Xian on Renmin Square - Classic Room (3 Star); Grand Noble Hotel Xian - Noble Club Floor Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: Fly to Dunhuang on the edge of the Gobi Desert

After breakfast, see a little more of Xian including the ancient City Walls - a large and well preserved fortress. From the wall is an impressive view of the old city contained within the walls and the modern city that lies on the outside of the walls. You may like to bike part of the walls or take a golf buggy around the perimeter (this is not included - you can decide on the day if you would like to do either of these activities and pay directly).

Your driver and guide will then take you to the airport for your flight to Dunhuang (approximately 2 hours 40 minutes). Upon your arrival at Dunhuang, your local guide will be there to meet you and transfer you to your hotel.

Overnight in Dunhuang: Guang Yuan Hotel Dunhuang - Standard Room (3 Star); Dunhuang International - Standard Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: The sights Dunhuang - Mogao Caves, Crescent Lake and more

Dunhuang was once a major stop on the ancient Silk Road, an intersection between the East and the West.

Visit the Mogao Caves (also known as the Mogao Grottoes), a network of caves famous for their statues and wall paintings, described as a treasure house of Buddhist art.

Next stop is Mingsha Shan the Singing Sand dune. The giant sand dune is composed of five different coloured sands - red, yellow, green, black and white. When the wind passes or when you slide down from its top, the dunes give out a singing sound. Here you can ride a camel or try sand sliding from the top of the dune (these are not included and you can decide on the day if you would like to do either and pay directly).

Continue on to Crescent Moon Spring, a spring in the shape of a crescent moon at the foot of Mingsha Shan - an oasis in the desert. Despite being surrounded by the sand dunes, the Spring has never been covered by quicksands or dried up as one might expect - a natural wonder of the Gobi Desert.

Overnight in Dunhuang: Guang Yuan Hotel Dunhuang - Standard Room (3 Star); Dunhuang International - Standard Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 5: Bullet train from Liuyuan to Turpan

This morning after breakfast, your driver will collect you and take you to the train station in Liuyuan (approximately 2.5 hours drive) where you will take the bullet train to Turpan (approximately 3.5 hours).

On arrival in Turpan, you will be met at the train station and taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Turpan: Turpan Hotel - Standard Room (3 Star); Turpan Huozhou Hotel - Standard Room (4 Star option)*

*Please note the Turpan Huozhou is a 3 Star hotel and the best hotel available

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: Discover the wonders Turpan - ruins, caves, desert and more

Turpan lies 154m below sea level, surrounded by desert and mountains. It is known as China's hottest city and one of the driest places in the world. In the summer time (July and August), temperatures reach over 40°C and even 50°C. It is a oasis in the desert and was a strategic point on the Silk Road.

Visit the Gaochang Ruins - an insight into this once prosperous cosmopolitan city along the silk road. Continue on to Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves. Of the 83 original caves, 57 caves currently remain dating back to 317 AD. Many of the statues and frescos here have either been destroyed or stolen - the most notorious was Albert Von Le Qoc from Germany who stole numerous frescoes that were destroyed in the bombing of Berlin in World War II.

Visit Flaming Mountain, named so because under the relentless heat of the midday sun combined with the appearance of the mountain, you could say it looks like it's on fire. This is also where the hottest temperature in China was recorded. Before returning to your hotel, visit Tuyoqa tiny grape-producing village where you can explore traditional Uyghur life and architecture. Tuyoq has been a pilgrimage site for Muslims for centuries, but you can also find a series of Buddhist caves dating back to the 3rd century AD.

Overnight in Turpan: Turpan Hotel - Standard Room (3 Star); Turpan Huozhou Hotel - Standard Room (4 Star option)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 7: Travel to the city of Urumqi with visits along the way

After breakfast, your driver will collect you from your hotel for the drive to Urumqi (approximately 2.5 hours). Along the way, visit Emin Minaret and the Karez Irrigation Site - developed as a way to bring the melted snow waters of the Tian Shan to the city through a series of wells dug into underground channels about 2,000 years ago. Stop at Jiaohe Ruins before arriving in Urumqi where you will be taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Urumqi: Yilite Hotel - Standard Room (3 Star); Bingtuan Grand Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 8: Visit the Heavenly Lake and fly to Kashgar

With a population of around 2.5 million people, Urumqi is famous for its claim that it is the most inland city in the world - furthest from any ocean. It's a modern city with a mix of cultures.

Visit the Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), 1980m above sea level surrounded by lush forest and snow capped mountains before being taken to the airport for your flight to Kashgar

On arrival in Kashgar, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight in Kashgar: Luxemon Qinibagh Hotel Kashgar Prefecture - Standard Room (3 Star); Tianyuan Hotel - Standard Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Sightseeing in Kashgar including the famous Sunday bazaar

Located in the far West, Kashgar is closer to Middle Eastern cities than it is to Beijing or Shanghai. Much of the old city has been rebuilt, but the Sunday Bazaar is a lively market, as it was in ancient days as a trading point on the Silk Road.

After breakfast your driver will collect you for your city tour. Visit the Id Kah Mosque, a beautiful yellow tiled mosque and the largest mosque in China.

Continue on to the Abakh Khoja Tomb and Xiangfei Tomb. Abakh Khoja was a powerful 17th century Kashgar ruler who was revered as a prophet and second only to Mohammed. Built in 1640, this tomb holds five generations of his family and is covered in splendidly mismatched glazed tiles - considered an architectural masterpiece and one of Xinjiang's holiest places. Xiangfei Tomb belongs to Abakh Khoja's granddaughter, Iparhan, who was seized and forced to marry the Qianlong Emperor of Qing Dynasty. She spent 28 years in the Forbidden City and never saw her family again, after she died, her body was carried back to Abakh Khoja Tomb over a tedious three-year journey.

Try your haggling skills and browse the Sunday Bazaar - renowned as the biggest market in Central Asia. This was a pivotal trading point along the Silk Road where goods have been traded for more than 2,000 years. The traditional bazaar was originally held on Sundays, but it currently is divided into two sections, one is the livestock district that is only open on Sundays and the other is the ordinary district especially busy on Sundays although open every day.

Please note: The dates for this tour coincide with Day 9 falling on a Sunday. If you wish to choose your own dates, please bear this mind.

Overnight in Kashgar: Luxemon Qinibagh Hotel Kashgar Prefecture - Standard Room (3 Star); Tianyuan Hotel - Standard Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Fly back to Urumqi and visit Bazaar

This morning your driver and guide will take you to the airport for your flight back to Urumqi.

On arrival in Urumqi you will be met at the airport. Visit the Erdaoqiao Bazaar, a bustling market with almost everything - fruit, clothing, crafts, knives, carpets and more.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Urumqi: Yilite Hotel - Standard Room (3 Star); Bingtuan Grand Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 11: See a 4,000 year old Mummy and fly back to Xian

This morning visit the Xinjiang Autonomous Region Museum (closed on Mondays). It houses a collection of artefacts and relics of more than 12 minority groups from all the major archaeological sites in Xinjiang. The prime exhibits are the preserved bodies and garments of nearly a dozen people found in tombs throughout Xinjiang along with the well known 4,000-year-old mummy of "Loulan Beauty".

You will then be taken to the airport for your flight back to Xian (approximately 3.5 hours). Upon arrival in Xian your local guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel.

How to get there:
This tour starts and ends in Xian, China.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping and so we provide the following information for you as a guide only.

Many tour guides and drivers in China rely on tips as part of their wages. In saying this, tipping always comes down to the service you have received and is a personal matter.

The following amounts can be used as a rule of thumb and are per person as you feel:

  • For a local tour guide in a small group of 2-4 people: USD8-12 per day
  • For a driver in a small group of 2-4 people: USD4-6 per day
  • For hotel bellboys: USD2-3 dollars per day

If your group is larger, the amount each person tips the guide or driver may decrease.

Generally you will have the same guide for the duration of your stay in each city/location and you can then give an accumulated tip at the end of your time in that city. For example, for 3 nights and 2 days in Beijing for a group of 2 people, at the end of your time in Beijing you might tip the guide USD50.

The driver does not always remain the same for each location and so you may prefer to tip them daily or check with your guide as to whether you will have the same driver the next day.

If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

We do realise that tipping is quite high for China and adds to the cost of your holiday. Generally speaking for a 10 Day Holiday you could budget to spend around USD150 on tipping.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Travel insurance:
Please also note that travel insurance is compulsory for China. If you would like a free quote, please contact us or visit our Travel Insurance page.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Currency information:
The currency used in China is the Renminbi.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Climate:
The locations on this tour vary in climate.

The summers can be hot during the day and cool at night. In July & August the temperatures in Turpan can reach above 40°C in the day and it other places the temperatures are around 30 - 35 °C. At night the temperatures drop to 20°C.

It is best to come prepared for hot and cool weather.

The winter months (October to March) are cold with temperatures around 0°C in December and January.

There is very little rainfall in these parts of China - in Turpan the average rainfall is 21mm per year!

Peak season: June to August is considered peak season.

Other dates to note include the following:

  • May 1 – 3: May 1 is a public holiday in China celebrating International Labour Day. High season surcharges may apply at this time.
  • July & August: This is the summer holiday period in China when Chinese domestic tourism is at its peak. Hotels fill up fast and major attractions can be crowded. If you would like to travel at this time please give us as much advance warning as possible so that we can make all the necessary arrangements for you. A high season surcharge may also apply.
  • October 1 – 7: National Day is on October 1 and from October 1 – 7 it is a national holiday. Many Chinese people travel at this time and tourist attractions and hotels are very busy. We do not recommend travelling at this time.

Population: 1.37 billion and growing. The most populous nation on Earth.

Language: Mandarin

Predominant religion: China is a multi-religious country with Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam and Christianity all forming part of the religious milieu of China.

Some interesting facts:
Turpan, means 'the lowest place' in local Uygur language and is the third lowest place on Earth (land surface) at 154m below sea level. The Dead Sea takes first place at -423m and Lake Assal in Djibouti just comes in at second place at -155m.

The worlds first paper money was created in China 1,400 years ago. This didn’t catch on in Europe until the 17th century and another century for the rest of the world.

China has more English speakers than the United States – there are a lot of people in China!

There is only one time zone (there used to be five) in China resulting in the sunrise being as late as 10am in some parts.
