Intro

In the North of Borneo you will find the Sabah region - an area that is packed with wildlife, full of great scenery and with much to discover and explore. From river safaris, to jungle lodges, orang-utans in the wild, snorkelling, fireflies, hot springs and much more - this 14 Day tour takes you to all the highlights and wonders.

Day 1: Arrival in Sandakan

Arrive at Sandakan airport where you will be met by your tour guide and transferred to the My Nature Resort. Located in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, the eco-friendly resort is a great place to start your Borneo adventure. Enjoy the boardwalk that winds through the forest and the incredible wonder of nature on offer. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Sepilok: My Nature Resort

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2: Enjoy your day at leisure in Sepilok

Enjoy your day at leisure in Sepilok and the resort.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - My Nature Resort, Sepilok

You may wish to make use of the swimming pool, explore the surrounding forest with the boardwalk or take the free shuttle bus to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC) or the nearby Rainforest Discovery Centre (this is at your own expense and a visit to SORC is included on Day 4).

Overnight in Sepilok: My Nature Resort

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 3: Take part in a turtle breeding program at Selingan Island

After breakfast you will be taken to the Sandakan jetty for a speed boat ride to Selingan Island (a 1-hour boat ride from the mainland). This is one of 3 islands in the Turtle Islands National Marine Park and is home to one of the world's most successful turtle breeding programs. You can spend the day at leisure swimming and snorkelling and enjoying the small island. After dinner the turtle activities begin and you will have the opportunity to witness the green turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs (accompanied by a ranger).

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Selingan Island - turtle hatchlings

You can also participate in the breeding program with transferring the eggs to the hatchery and releasing newly hatched baby turtles in the sea. An all round magical experience :)

Please note: The focus of Selingan Island is conservation. The island is open to a limited number of tourists each day. Early bookings are recommended. During July and August, bookings fill up very quickly. The accommodation provided is basic but comfortable, consisting of simple chalets with ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you may not be able to take all of your luggage with you on the boat to Selingan Island. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. Your luggage will be stored securely in the offices of the tour operator and you can collect the following morning when you return to Sandakan.

Overnight on Selingan Island: Selingan Island Chalet

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Orang-utans, sun bears and cruise the Kinabatangan River to Abai

After breakfast you will return to Sandakan on the mainland. From here you will be driven to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center (SORC), where orphaned orang-utans are raised to be released back into the wild. It is a great place to see the "man of the forest" – the literal translation of orang-utan. The SORC has a dedicated team to look after these gorgeous creatures.

There is a boardwalk that runs through the centre where you can see the orang-utans in their natural environment.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Orang-utans

Feeding time is 10am where you can watch the orang-utans come for their morning tea of bananas, and if the nursery is open, view what you could call an orang-utan kindergarten!

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center is just across the road from the SORC. This is the home of rescued sun bears who are cared for by another team of devoted animal lovers. It is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world and has received the attention of National Geographic.

At 11am, depart Sepilok and travel back to Sandakan where you will take a one-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River - pass through pristine mangrove forests keeping an eye out for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle River Lodge and have lunch.

Abai is a secluded location on the Kinabatangan River in the forest reserve. Explore the trails that run through the surrounding jungle and make use of the bird watching tower. The area is home to a huge amount of wildlife including monkeys, orang-utans, birds and much more.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a river cruise to search for wildlife. As night falls, witness the glittering of the fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner and after dinner take a guided night walk around the lodge.

Overnight in Abai: Abai Jungle Lodge

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: River cruising, wildlife spotting, village life and travel to Sukau

Take an early morning river cruise on the Kinabatangan River to the nearby Pitas Lake to view more birds and wildlife. Come back to the resort for breakfast and then visit the nearby Abai village. Enjoy a local-style lunch prepared by the villagers and then cruise up river to Sukau.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Kinabatangan River, pygmy elephants

Check-in to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and in the late afternoon, take another river cruise on the Menanggul River. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight in Sukau: Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Explore Sandakan including the Australian War Memorial

After breakfast return by boat to Sandakan. The 2.5-hour journey offers another opportunity for wildlife spotting as well as relaxing and enjoying the jungle scenery. Along the way stop at Abai before continuing to Sandakan. Have lunch and then take a city tour that includes Sim Sim Water Village and the War Memorial. Sandakan was home to a Prisoner of War camp during World War II and the War Memorial provides an excellent account of this history.

Overnight in Sepilok: My Nature Resort

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Fly to Kota Kinabalu

Today you are free at leisure until it is time for your airport transfer for your flight to Kota Kinabalu (around 50 minutes). Upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu: Grandis Hotel

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: Proboscis monkeys and fireflies in the Garama Wetlands

Spend your morning at leisure. In the afternoon, at 2pm you will be collected from your hotel and taken through paddy fields, small kampungs (villages) and palm oil plantations. Your destination is the Garama Wetlands (also known as the Klias Wetlands). It is a beautiful environment of rivers, mangrove forests and sago palms and is home to the unique proboscis monkey, endemic only to Borneo.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Proboscis Monkeys

Take a boat trip through the mangroves and watch the monkeys go about their evening on the riverbank. This is a wonderful opportunity to watch these animals in the wild as dusk falls. Then enjoy the glittering fireflies on the nearby trees.

Dinner is provided, before the return road trip back to Kota Kinabalu.

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu: Grandis Hotel

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 9: Gaya Island - private beach, snorkelling and kayaking

Make your own way to Jesselton Jetty (a 15 minute walk from the hotel) and check in at Bunga Raya Island Resort’s Lounge.

Travelbay Borneo Tous - Gaya Island

You will then be taken by boat to Gaya Island (a 20 minute boat ride) for a relaxing island trip on a secluded area of the Island, with its own private beach, owned by the 5-Star island resort, Bunga Raya. Enjoy snorkelling, kayaking or simply spend the day under the sun relaxing.

In the afternoon return to Jesselton Jetty (around 4.00 pm) and make your own way back to your hotel.

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu: Grandis Hotel

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Discover Kudat and visit a traditional Rungus Longhouse

This morning after breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred overland to Kudat (around 3 hours).

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Kudat

On arrival proceed to the Bavanggazo Village for a Longhouse visit. Built entirely using local materials, the longhouse is home to the Rungus people, a sub-tribe of the indigenous Kadazan-Dusun. See their unique beadwork, lifestyle and costumes.

After a local lunch at the Longhouse continue your journey for about 1 hour to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the Northern Tip of Borneo. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the coastline, then continue to Kinabalu Park.

Overnight in Kinabalu: Kinabalu Park

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 11: Jungle canopy walkway, Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Kinabalu Park

In the morning after breakfast, take a guided walk on one of the trails to explore the montane forest. Then visit the education centre and Mountain Garden - home to many species of orchids, pitcher plants, birds, insects and butterflies.

Next carry on to Poring Hot Springs. Walk amidst tropical lowland rainforests leading up to the treetop canopy walkways. Enjoy your time at leisure or soak yourself in one of the open air sulphur spring bathtubs (remember to pack your swimmers).

Continue on to Sabah Tea Resort and spend the afternoon at leisure.

Overnight in Ranau: Sabah Tea Resort.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 12: Kinabalu Park & Kundasang War Memorial

After breakfast visit the tea factory, then continue on to the Kundasang War Memorial Park (60 km from Sabah Tea Resort) - also a great spot for photos of Mount Kinabalu (if the weather permits) before returning to Kota Kinabalu.

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu: Grandis Hotel

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Customer Reviews

We had a lovely break and such an amazing time. We so extremely lucky with the animals we saw in the wild. So many babies which is a good sign. Our favourite was probably the elephants but the turtles, sun bears and orang-utans were also so amazing to see. It felt like each day exceeded the previous, there were so many highlights for us.

Travelbay was amazing to deal, thanks again.

We wouldn't change a thing with our tour in Borneo... Our guides were very helpful and one went out of his way to help and look after us. Holidays are successful if the guide has his job at heart. We loved the wildlife - the orangutans, the turtles, sun bears, monkeys, lizards, swifts.

A well-organised tour, everything went well and was absolutely spot on. We saw all the animals except for the pygmy elephants, but we did see their tracks. We had great guides and everything was good and interesting. I've been recommending Travelbay to many people and we will be booking with you again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the tour?

You can pretty much choose any date (subject to availability) and we can usually accommodate everyone including short notice and long term bookings.

Is my departure guaranteed?

Once you have paid for your booking and received confirmation of your travel dates from Travelbay, your holiday is guaranteed on your chosen departure date - except in cases of major weather events and alike in which case we do our best to adjust your holiday accordingly.

How much is the tour?

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Borneo?

Borneo is an island comprised of 3 different countries (Malaysia, Indonesia & Brunei). This tour is in the Malaysian part of Borneo.

Australian passport holders do not require a visa for tourist travel in Malaysia.

If a visa is required it is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel.

To find out the visa requirements for Malaysia, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Malaysia here: Visa Information page.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is not customary in Borneo and is entirely at your discretion.

However, leaving a token of appreciation is likely to be welcomed.

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Borneo?

Internet access in hotels and tourist areas is common although it can be slow. In the more remote areas access may be limited.

Can I use my mobile phone in Borneo?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. The more remote areas may not have network coverage.

The currency used in Borneo depends on the country you are in:

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available in Borneo.

Major credit cards are accepted in some hotels. At smaller family type restaurants, market stalls and in small towns, it's not likely you'll be able to use your credit card.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Borneo to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Borneo?

Type G (Irish/British 3-pin)

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Borneo there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Borneo?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Many, many thanks

Many, many thanks to the Travelbay team for the excellent Borneo tour package.

The itinerary is great, covering a great breadth of places, wildlife and people. The accommodation is excellent. The guides are knowledgeable and experienced. They know the areas visited intimately, are articulate and highly skilled in customer service. I have been on tours that did not use guides from the local region and/or local cultural group, which is in my view not good practice.

The trip on the Kinabatangan river is my favourite part - I loved every moment. It is wonderful to have seen so much wild life and territory up close. On the river we saw 40+ bird species as well as all the monkeys. Loved the orangutan sanctuary and the sunbears. We saw an orangutan mother and baby in the jungle alongside the river!

Also, the environmental issues are being well managed in Borneo - a marked contrast to neighbouring countries where I have been recently.

So thanks again to the Travelbay team for the great trip

Two wonderful weeks

We have arrived safely home after 2 wonderful weeks. Everything went really well, even when the bus due to pick us up to take us to the airport broke down, the driver contacted their office who organised a taxi which arrived at the expected time.

All the transfers and accommodation were as described in the itinerary and the guides were wonderful.

Thank you so much for organising everything for us.

Wow!!!!

It was an absolutely fantastic tour. I really love Borneo - the animals, beautiful terrain and the tour guides especially Marty in Sukau and Roy in Kudat, they went the extra mile in making us comfortable and happy in every way. Our small group of four worked really well, we were about similar age and had a lot in common and became good friends.
