Intro

If you want to see the very best of the wildlife wonderland that Borneo has to offer – this tour covers it all. See the orang-utans and sun bears in Sepilok, watch turtles lay their eggs and release baby hatchlings into the ocean on Selingan Island, cruise the Kinabatangan River looking for wildlife and explore the spectacular Danum Valley - the oldest primary rainforest in the world and home to cloud leopards, orang-utans, long nosed monkeys and a seemingly endless list of flora and fauna.

Day 1: Arrival in Sandakan

Arrive at Sandakan airport where you will be met by your tour guide and transferred to the My Nature Resort. Located in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, the eco-friendly resort is a great place to start your Borneo adventure. Enjoy the boardwalk that winds through the forest and the incredible wonder of nature on offer. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Sepilok: My Nature Resort (Standard & Deluxe)

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2: See the orang-utans and sun bears

After breakfast visit the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center (SORC), where orphaned orang-utans are raised to be released back into the wild. It is a great place to see the "man of the forest" – the literal translation of orang-utan. The SORC has a dedicated team to look after these gorgeous creatures.

There is a boardwalk that runs through the centre where you can see the orang-utans in their natural environment.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Orang-utans

Feeding time is 10am where you can watch the orang-utans come for their morning tea of bananas, and if the nursery is open, view what you could call an orang-utan kindergarten!

Next visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center just across the road from the SORC. This is the home of rescued sun bears who are cared for by another team of devoted animal lovers. It is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world and has received the attention of National Geographic.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - My Nature Resort, Sepilok

Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure in Sepilok and at the resort. You may wish to make use of the swimming pool, explore the surrounding forest with the boardwalk or take the free shuttle bus to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre or the nearby Rainforest Discovery Centre.

Overnight in Sepilok: My Nature Resort (Standard & Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Take part in a turtle breeding program at Selingan Island

After breakfast you will be taken to the Sandakan jetty for a speed boat ride to Selingan Island (a 1-hour boat ride from the mainland). This is one of 3 islands in the Turtle Islands National Marine Park and is home to one of the world's most successful turtle breeding programs. You can spend the day at leisure swimming and snorkelling and enjoying the small island. After dinner the turtle activities begin and you will have the opportunity to witness the green turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs (accompanied by a ranger).

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Selingan Island - turtle hatchlings

You can also participate in the breeding program with transferring the eggs to the hatchery and releasing newly hatched baby turtles in the sea. An all round magical experience :)

Please note: The focus of Selingan Island is conservation. The island is open to a limited number of tourists each day. Early bookings are recommended. During July and August, bookings fill up very quickly. The accommodation provided is basic but comfortable, consisting of simple chalets with ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you may not be able to take all of your luggage with you on the boat to Selingan Island. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. Your luggage will be stored securely in the offices of the tour operator and you can collect the following morning when you return to Sandakan.

Overnight on Selingan Island: Selingan Island Chalet (Standard & Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Explore Sandakan and cruise the Kinabatangan River to Abai

This morning after breakfast leave Selingan Island by boat to Sandakan (around 6.30-7.00am). On arrival at Sandakan jetty you will be met by your driver and guide and taken on a city tour of Sandakan that includes the Australian War Memorial and Sim Sim Water Village. Sandakan was home to a Prisoner of War camp during World War II. The War Memorial provides an excellent account of this history.

Next take a one-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River from Sandakan - pass through pristine mangrove forests keeping an eye out for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle River Lodge and have lunch.

Abai is a secluded location on the Kinabatangan River in the forest reserve. Explore the trails that run through the surrounding jungle and make use of the bird watching tower. The area is home to a huge amount of wildlife including monkeys, orang-utans, birds and much more.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a river cruise to search for wildlife. As night falls, witness the glittering of the fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner and after dinner take a guided night walk around the lodge.

Overnight in Abai: Abai Jungle Lodge (Standard & Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: River cruising, wildlife spotting, village life and travel to Sukau

Take an early morning river cruise on the Kinabatangan River to the nearby Pitas Lake to view more birds and wildlife. Come back to the resort for breakfast and then visit the nearby Abai village. Enjoy a local-style lunch prepared by the villagers and then cruise up river to Sukau.

Travelbay Borneo Tours - Kinabatangan River, pygmy elephants

Check-in to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and in the late afternoon, take another river cruise including on the Menanggul River. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight in Sukau: Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge (Standard & Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Arrive in Danum Valley – the oldest untouched rainforest in the world

After breakfast depart the lodge at 7am and proceed overland to Lahad Datu. Arrive at the Borneo Nature Tours office, register and have a briefing on the activities and facilities at Danum Valley. At 9.30am depart for the scheduled transfer (2 hours) to Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley. Attend a brief orientation before lunch.

Travelbay Borneo Tours, Danum Valley

In the afternoon, depart for a guided walk on a nature trail (400m boardwalk circuit) and the 300m canopy walkway. In the evening, have dinner at the lodge. If weather permits, enjoy a night drive in search of nocturnal animals.

Overnight in the Danum Valley: Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Standard Room (Standard); Deluxe Room (Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Explore the Danum Valley with jungle trekking

The mornings are famously misty in the Danum Valley and are a spectacular sight. Spend the day exploring the rainforest with more opportunities to spot birds and wildlife. The Danum valley is home to more than 290 species of birds which is more than half the bird's species of all of Borneo.

After breakfast, depart for a trek along the "Coffin Trail" through the rich forest to the ancient Kadazandusun burial site. It’s a 3km return trip, involving a 40-minute climb to a magnificent lookout point. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon go on another jungle trek in search of wildlife or opt for a relaxing session of tubing down the Danum River. After dinner, depart for a night walk in search of nocturnal creatures.

Overnight in the Danum Valley: Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Standard Room (Standard); Deluxe Room (Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: A leisurely morning in the rainforest, fly to Kota Kinabalu

Spend a leisurely morning enjoying the luxuries of the lodge or explore more of the jungle on one of the many jungle trails. After lunch you will be transferred to Lahad Datu for your afternoon flight to Kota Kinabalu.

Your tour guide will be at the airport to meet you and transfer you to your hotel.

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu: Hyatt Regency Kinabalu - City View Room (Standard and Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

After breakfast spend the rest of the day at your leisure until it is time for your transfer to the airport for your flight home or onto your next adventure.

Please note: Check-out time is usually around mid-day. If your flight leaves later and you would like a late check-out please let us know and we can check availability and get you a quote.

Meals included: Breakfast

If you would like to extend your stay in Borneo, please let us know and we can arrange additional nights for you.

Additional details

*All accommodation and hotels are subject to change. If the stated hotel is not available a hotel of a similar standard will be booked.

Why is the 9 Day Tour so much more expensive than the 8 Day Tour?
Our 8 Day Wildlife Wonderland Tour is very similar to this 9 Day tour, however the increase in price is substantial for the 9 Days. This is because the 9 Day Tour includes 2 nights at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the secluded Danum Valley. The Danum Valley is not on the tourist route and visiting here is a rather special experience.

On arrival you will be met by your guide and in each location you may have a different guide.

If you would like a quote for your international flights to and from Borneo, please let us know. Likewise, if you would like any stopovers or travel insurance, we would be happy to provide you with a quote.

Have to tell you we had a wonderful time away. We were so lucky to see the big 5 of Borneo all on the first day at Sukau. Seeing an orangutan in the wild was amazing. That evening we were also privileged to see a group/family of 9 elephants crossing a river. We loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Borneo?

Borneo is an island comprised of 3 different countries (Malaysia, Indonesia & Brunei). This tour is in the Malaysian part of Borneo.

Australian passport holders do not require a visa for tourist travel in Malaysia.

If a visa is required it is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel.

To find out the visa requirements for Malaysia, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Malaysia here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is not customary in Borneo and is entirely at your discretion.

However, leaving a token of appreciation is likely to be welcomed.

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Borneo?

Internet access in hotels and tourist areas is common although it can be slow. In the more remote areas access may be limited.

Can I use my mobile phone in Borneo?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. The more remote areas may not have network coverage.

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Borneo depends on the country you are in:

Malaysia: Malaysian Ringgit
Indonesia: Indonesian Rupiah
Brunei: Brunei Dollar

This tour is in the Malaysian part of Borneo.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available in Borneo.

Major credit cards are accepted in some hotels. At smaller family type restaurants, market stalls and in small towns, it's not likely you'll be able to use your credit card.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Borneo to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Borneo?

Type G (Irish/British 3-pin)

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Borneo there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Borneo?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Amazing holiday

I have just returned from my amazing holiday in Borneo which Travelbay organised for me. The organisation was faultless and the trip was unforgettable.

Please pass on my feedback about my guide Zaimi, he was outstanding, so friendly and really made the whole trip perfect.

The Travelbay staff are professional and enthusiastic, a pleasure to deal with.

Thank you again for such a memorable holiday.

Thanking you

Hi Travelbay. We touched down in Sydney a few days ago, fresh from our Borneo trip and reminiscing with fond memories of our jungle experience. We experienced some great wildlife encounters, consisting of orang-utans, snakes, lots of monkeys, turtles and a very large croc. The transitions to various points and accommodation went very smoothly and the guides and all staff were superb. Thanking you for all the organisation at your end; we really enjoyed our Borneo adventure 😀 🐢 🐊 🐒

Unforgettable experience

Dear Fiona, Nikki, the Travelbay team

My 10 year old son has a keen interest in wildlife, and wanted to experience the jungle. Well we have recently returned from the most incredible 2 week adventure to Borneo, where all his wildest dreams came true! The jungle was lush and rich, teaming with life, and very beautiful!

We had some unforgettable experiences, seeing orang-utans and Proboscis Monkeys in the wild, among so many other creatures of all kinds.....flying squirrels, frogs, owls, rhinoceros beetles, fireflies, even a herd of pygmy elephants. At every turn there was something different to marvel at.

Not only was the wildlife remarkable, but our accommodation was really lovely and provided a great place to retreat after busy days in the tropical heat. Danum Valley, and the Borneo Rain forest Lodge were a highlight. Thank you for recommending this area! Who could be disappointed to wake up with primary forest, millions of years old, clouded in mist, directly outside your front door?

The local team of guides and drivers were always professional. They were knowledgeable, educational and personable. We want to sincerely thank them for their passionate work! Some went over and above, to try and please.

Thank you Travelbay for organising everything for us. You were splendid.

We would not hesitate to recommend you to any of our friends or family. Hope to book again with you in the future.
