Intro

This is a very special 10 Day tour of Cambodia that takes you along a less travelled route and one that gives you an insight into the Secrets of the Mekong - river beaches, smiling dolphins, peaceful villages and more. Combine this with the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat and you are set to have a fantastic time in Cambodia.

This is a private tour with a mixture of local buses, ferries and private vehicles. You will have you own personal tour guide for any sightseeing and all day tours are with a private car.

Day 1: Arrival in Phnom Penh

Upon arriving in Phnom Penh, a representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (Standard); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (Deluxe); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (Super Deluxe)

Day 2: Explore Phnom Penh and visit the Killing Fields

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

Begin your tour this morning with a visit to the Royal Palace. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the palace is now home to the current King. The palace is open to the public except when the King is in residence. The grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, named so due the floor that is covered by 5,000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilogram.

Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against both their political enemies and many thousands of everyday Cambodians. In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture centre in the country. Please note that the images on display are quite graphic and unsettling.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Killing Fields, Phnom Penh

Then drive to Choeung Ek - The Killing Fields, where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women and children took place. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line.

The Genocide Museum and Killing Fields can be quite a shock and give you much to ponder on. It’s a little different than usual holiday activities, however in our view something the world needs to know about and something we recommend.

If time permits, end your city tour at the domed Central Market (Psar Thmei) with countless stalls stacked high with goods ranging from gold and silver to exotic flowers, food and souvenirs. Your driver and guide will take you back your hotel for a second night’s stay.

Please note: When visiting the Royal Palace you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (Standard); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (Deluxe); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (Super Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Cruise to Silk Island on the Mekong River

Later this morning your driver will pick you up by tuk tuk for your half day tour to Silk Island. You will be taken to the pier for your cruise to the island. A BBQ lunch will be served on board as you enjoy the sights along the Phnom Penh riverfront and the Mekong River. The cruise to Silk Island takes around 1 hour and is a shared cruise.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Silk Island, Phnom Penh

At Silk Island you will have a guided tour of the silk farms and see the process of how silk transforms from larvae to finished product.

On the boat journey back to Phnom Penh you can enjoy snacks and cocktails on board. On arrival back in Phnom Penh you will be taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (Standard); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (Deluxe); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (Super Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Travel to Kratie and the Mekong island of Koh Trong

After breakfast your driver will collect you and take you to the local bus station where you will take the public air-conditioned bus* to Kratie. The journey takes around 6 hours and passes through the countryside - you can see the locals going about their daily life, working in the fields and the small villages.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Irrawaddy dolphin, Mekong River

Kratie (pronounced kra-cheh) is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins that live in the Mekong River and are known for their smiles. It's a great place to enjoy a Mekong sunset and is a laidback riverside town.

On arrival, your driver will meet you at the station and take you to the pier for the local ferry to your hotel on Koh Trong - an island just across the water from Kratie.

*If you prefer we can quote for a private driver - please contact us.

Overnight in Koh Trong: Rajabori Villas - Deluxe Room (Standard, Deluxe & Super Deluxe options)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: At leisure on Koh Trong

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Koh Trong, Mekong Delta

Today is a free day for you to enjoy Koh Trong. Koh Trong is known for its peaceful village life, lush scenery and river beaches. This is rural island life and you may like to take a swim or a bicycle tour on the island, visit a Vietnamese floating village and local pagoda or simply relax at the Villas.

Overnight in Koh Trong: Rajabori Villas - Deluxe Room (Standard, Deluxe & Super Deluxe options)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: Travel North to Stung Treng

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Sunset on Mekong, Stung Treng

This morning check out of your accommodation and take the ferry back to Kratie where you will continue by a private car to the town of Stung Treng. The drive is around 90 km and takes around 2 hours. Located further North on the Mekong, it is a quiet town - also home to the Irrawaddy dolphin and great sunsets. Spend the afternoon at your leisure.

Overnight in Stung Treng: Mekong Bird Resort - Standard Room (Standard); VIP Room (Deluxe & Super Deluxe options)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7: Travel to Siem Reap

After breakfast, travel by local air-conditioned bus* to Siem Reap. The drive takes around 5 hours and again passes through the countryside. On arrival in Siem Reap your driver will meet you at the bus station and take you to your hotel where you can spend the afternoon at leisure.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Pub St, Siem Reap

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The hotel staff can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

*If you prefer we can quote for a private driver - please contact us.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (Standard); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (Deluxe); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (Super Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: Full Day tour of the majesty and magic of the Angkor temples

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Angkor Wat

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups). Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples.

Accompanied by your guide, enter from East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions.

The tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch

Day 9: More temples of Angkor - Banteay Srei, Banteay Samre & Pre Rup

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples.

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship of women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back to your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

Today the tour ends. After breakfast you will be taken to the airport in time for your flight or if you would like to extend your time in Cambodia, we can arrange this for you.

Meals included: Breakfast

We really enjoyed our tour. Everything was like clockwork. Having everything organised took the pressure off us. We had time to ourselves to do shopping, see museums etc. It was very well balanced. It was absolutely great. Just terrific.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Customer Reviews

Thank you so much for organising a wonderful tour throughout Vietnam and Cambodia. We all had a great time exploring and seeing the sights. The accommodation throughout the tour was excellent! A special mention to our last hotel in Siem Reap, La Niche D’Angkor, which was our favourite. This hotel was in a great position as there was no noisy traffic, the staff were very welcoming, we loved the tranquil gardens with the beautiful pool which was just perfect for relaxing on our final day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the tour?

You can pretty much choose any date (subject to availability) and we can usually accommodate everyone including short notice and long term bookings.

Is my departure guaranteed?

Once you have paid for your booking and received confirmation of your travel dates from Travelbay, your holiday is guaranteed on your chosen departure date - except in cases of major weather events and alike in which case we do our best to adjust your holiday accordingly.

How much is the tour?

Travelbay provides Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe pricing options, based on twin share (2 people per room). Please see the pricing at the top of the page.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Private Tour. It will be only you and your travel companions in the group.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available at most hotels.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Cambodia?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel.

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia.

You can either obtain your visa on arrival in Phnom Penh or you can apply online before departure.

To find out the visa requirements for Cambodia, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Cambodia here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Cambodia?

WIFI is common in many hotels in the main tourist areas and big cities as are internet cafes. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone or should I get a local SIM card?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have network coverage.

You will need to check with your mobile carrier at home about roaming and charges and make sure global roaming is activated before you leave home.

You can also buy a local SIM when there and use the local network - both for phone calls and mobile data. (This is what we do and find it very easy).

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

Both the US Dollar and the Cambodian Riel are accepted in Cambodia.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Cambodia. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Cambodia to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Is the traffic really scary?

There are lots of scooters in Cambodia and the roads in the main cities are very busy!

The road rules in Cambodia are very different to those in the Western World and because of this some people find it scary. In Cambodia it is more about flow and rhythm and all the traffic moving in the same flow, which then leads to order.

In Cambodia they drive on the right side of the road.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Cambodia?

In Cambodia there are 3 plug types: A, C and G.

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Cambodia there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Cambodia?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

Whilst our official office hours are Monday to Friday - 9am to 5.30pm AET (Sydney time) we are regularly in the office outside of these hours and at weekends.

Feel free to ring at any time before 7:30pm - 7 days a week - 365 days a year. If we are busy on other calls or not available please leave a message including your phone number and area code and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

You are also very welcome to email us on team@travelbay.com 24/7 - we check our emails regularly. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Russian market in Phnom Penh is well know for tourist shopping (as well as observing local life). In Siem Reap you'll find the night markets as well as a range of local shops in the town centre.

We personally recommend...

  • Cambodia silk - Cambodia has a history of silk production and traditional weaving methods are still in use today. You can find beautiful scarves, clothes and purses amongst other things.
  • Textiles and batiks - the colours and designs of the fabrics and textiles in Cambodia are unique and eye catching - a great souvenir.
  • Handicrafts - from Angkor inspired carvings to little Buddhas and elephants statues, there are lots of great handicrafts.
