Day 1: Arrival in Beijing

Upon your arrival at the Beijing airport, your local guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and enjoy.

Overnight in Beijing: Paragon Hotel Beijing - Standard Room (3 Star); Beijing Novotel Peace Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Day 2: Explore Beijing – Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City…

Today you will explore Beijing beginning with Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.  Tiananmen Square is known in the West for the 1989 student demonstrations and protests. Its name means Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen) and it is home to various monuments and Halls including the Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall that enhouses Mao's embalmed body.

Continue on to Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was the Chinese Imperial Palace for around 500 years and is one of the world's largest and best-preserved collections of ancient buildings. It was home to one emperor and the many wives, concubines, eunuchs and servants. Gain an insight into the opulence of Imperial China. There is quite a lot of walking so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

After your morning sight seeing, spend the afternoon as you choose in this wonderful city.

Overnight in Beijing: Paragon Hotel Beijing - Standard Room (3 Star); Beijing Novotel Peace Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Visit the Great Wall of China

Visit the Great Wall of China at Badaling Great Remnant Wall. The views from here are magnificent and this part of the wall has been preserved as it originally was, giving a real sense of the history of the magnificent ancient structure that was built over 2,300 years ago.

After visiting the Great Wall you have the opportunity to visit a Jade shop* before returning to your hotel.

Overnight in Beijing: Paragon Hotel Beijing - Standard Room (3 Star); Beijing Novotel Peace Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: Visit the Temple of Heaven and travel to Xi'an by High Speed Train

After breakfast visit the Temple of Heaven, a unique structure that once served as an imperial sacrificial altar and an outstanding example of Ming Dynasty architecture. After your visit here you will be transferred to the train station to take the High Speed G train to Xi'an. The journey takes around 5.5 hours and upon arrival your personal guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel.

Overnight in Xi'an: Mercure Xian on Renmin Square - Classic Room (3 Star); Grand Noble Hotel Xian - Noble Club Floor Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Visit the incredible Army of Terracotta Warriors

Xi’an was the capital for eleven dynasties over a period of more than 2,000 years and was the first Chinese city to open its doors to the world during the Tang Dynasty (618 AD to 907 AD). Visit the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site discovered in 1974. There you will find a life sized terracotta army of thousands of warriors buried with First Emperor Qin (d. 201BC) to defend him in the afterlife. It is considered one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world - you will see why!

After lunch visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and the Xian Art Ceramics Factory.

Overnight in Xi'an: Mercure Xian on Renmin Square - Classic Room (3 Star); Grand Noble Hotel Xian - Noble Club Floor Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: Morning in Xi'an and then Fly to Shanghai

After breakfast you are free to tour Muslim Street, one of Xi'an's greatest attractions. The street is well known for its food stalls and where you can see Islam thriving in China. Whilst a tourist attraction, it is as much for locals as it is for tourists.

Check out from the hotel at noon so as to be transferred to the airport for your flight to Shanghai (2 hours 15 minutes duration). Upon arrival, your tour guide will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel.

Overnight in Shanghai: Greenland Jiulong Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Sunrise on The Bund Hotel - Standard Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7: Explore Shanghai - Yu Garden, Yu Market and the Bund

After breakfast visit the Shanghai Museum (includes the translator) - a museum of ancient Chinese art. Then visit Yu Yuan Garden, the famous classical garden and Yu Yuan Market where you can step back in time, do some shopping, try local snacks and marvel at what is also known as Shanghai Old Street. You can also visit a silk workshop.

In the afternoon take a stroll along The Bund, a 1.5 km walkway stretching along the Huangpu River lined with European colonial architecture. Then visit the French Section of Shanghai - quiet, tree lined streets where you can enjoy a break from skyscrapers and enjoy the area that was once designated for the French. It now has boutiques, art galleries and antique stores where you can soak up the culture.

Overnight in Shanghai: Greenland Jiulong Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); The Bund Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: Time for home or onto your next adventure.

Today you are free at leisure in Shanghai until your personal guide and private transfer will escort you to the airport for your departure flight. It's time to say goodbye or hello to your next destination.

*Notes on shopping: Your tour guide may offer you shopping opportunities, but sometimes, you may not want to go. In this case, please do not hesitate to tell our guides directly. In the shops, do not feel obliged to buy anything.

One shop will be recommended by the local guide in each city. We recommend buying local specialties in different cities rather than buying everything in one city. Because China is a big country, different cities are famous for different items.

Travelbay China - 8 Day Golden Triangle Private Tour

How to get there:
This tour starts in Beijing and ends in Shanghai, China.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping and so we provide the following information for you as a guide only.

Many tour guides and drivers in China rely on tips as part of their wages. In saying this, tipping always comes down to the service you have received and is a personal matter.

The following amounts can be used as a rule of thumb and are per person as you feel:

  • For a local tour guide in a small group of 2-4 people: USD8-12 per day
  • For a driver in a small group of 2-4 people: USD4-6 per day
  • For hotel bellboys: USD2-3 dollars per day

If your group is larger, the amount each person tips the guide or driver may decrease.

Generally you will have the same guide for the duration of your stay in each city/location and you can then give an accumulated tip at the end of your time in that city. For example, for 3 nights and 2 days in Beijing for a group of 2 people, at the end of your time in Beijing you might tip the guide USD50.

The driver does not always remain the same for each location and so you may prefer to tip them daily or check with your guide as to whether you will have the same driver the next day.

If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

We do realise that tipping is quite high for China and adds to the cost of your holiday. Generally speaking for a 10 Day Holiday you could budget to spend around USD150 on tipping.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Currency information:
The currency used in China is the Renminbi.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

It is hard to give a summary of the climate of China due to the fact that China is a big country! The Beijing-Xi’an-Shanghai triangle has a climate with hot and wet summers and cold, dry winters. Autumn and spring fall in between.

Dry season: November to May
Wet season: July to August
Temperature:  In July and August the temperatures average 28°C and in winter average as low as -4°C mid winter.

Peak season:
China is a popular destination all year round – each time of the year has something to offer. The summers are hot, spring and autumn temperate and the winters can be fresh and cold with snow in some places. May and April in the spring are popular times to visit as are October and November (except for the first week of October – see below).

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when travel in China can be a little difficult. Most people go home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but it normally falls in late January to February. Please note – we do not recommend travelling at this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

  • May 1 – 3: May 1 is a public holiday in China celebrating International Labour Day. High season surcharges may apply at this time.
  • July & August: This is the summer holiday period in China when Chinese domestic tourism is at its peak. Hotels fill up fast and major attractions can be crowded. If you would like to travel at this time please give us as much advance warning as possible so that we can make all the necessary arrangements for you. A high season surcharge may also apply.
  • October 1 – 7: National Day is on October 1 and from October 1 – 7 it is a national holiday. Many Chinese people travel at this time and tourist attractions and hotels are very busy. We do not recommend travelling at this time.

Population: 1.37 billion and growing. The most populous nation on Earth.

Language: Mandarin

Predominant religion: China is a multi-religious country with Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam and Christianity all forming part of the religious milieu of China.

Some interesting facts:
The worlds first paper money was created in China 1,400 years ago. This didn’t catch on in Europe until the 17th century and another century for the rest of the world.

The Great Wall of China is the longest man made structure on Earth and spans 8,850 km and is more than 2,300 years old (and it’s not visible from space without aid!). In some parts, the mortar used to bind the bricks was made from sticky rice.

China has more English speakers than the United States – there are a lot of people in China!

There is only one time zone (there used to be five) in China resulting in the sunrise being as late as 10am in some parts.
