Intro

The combination of Laos and Cambodia is a sure-fire South East Asia combo. This 12 day tour takes you to the very best places of the two countries - the delights of Luang Prabang, the magnificence of the temples of Angkor Wat plus the two capital cities of Vientiane and Phnom Penh. Shop at the markets, enjoy yummy food, discover the somewhat harrowing history, be charmed by the locals and soak up the culture. It's likely you'll want to stay longer or return to see more - don't worry, we can help you with that 😊

Day 1: LAOS ~ Arrival in Luang Prabang

On arrival you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your hotel in the gorgeous town of Luang Prabang.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage town, Luang Prabang is a lovely place to visit. With a laidback atmosphere in a beautiful location on the Mekong River and surrounded by green mountains, you can watch monks wander the streets, visit the many gilded wats (temples), explore the markets, enjoy world class cuisine and more.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Night markets, Luang Prabang

The night markets in Luang Prabang are exceptional and we recommend a visit. They are within walking distance from your hotel (3, 4 and 5 star options) and you can visit them at your leisure.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: LAOS ~ Luang Prabang sightseeing and the Pak Ou Caves

After breakfast, start with a sightseeing tour of Luang Prabang including the markets and former King's Palace.

After seeing the town, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. Along the way you will get a glimpse of typical Laotian villages.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Pak Ou Caves

Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves - both are home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from a few centimetres to two metres in height.

After the caves, visit Ban Xang Hai, a popular village for sampling traditional rice whisky which is produced here. Then return to Luang Prabang by boat.

Later today and in time for sunset, climb up to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa and incredible sunset views of the city and Mekong River.

Please note: There are around 329 steps to reach the top.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: LAOS ~ Monks, markets, local villages and Kuang Si Waterfall

Travelbay Laos Tours - Monks, Luang Prabang

This morning you may choose to wake up early and participate in the daily morning ritual of saffron-clad monks with their black alms-giving bowls receiving offerings from the local people, including the ubiquitous sticky rice.

Please note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered. We recommend out of respect to have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

From here visit the Phosi Market with its diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin, local tea, chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.

Visit the traditional Hmong village of Ban Na Ouan, known for its textiles, and the Khmu village of Ban Thapen. In Ban Thapen you can see the process of bamboo weaving.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can cool off, enjoy the leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall if you wish.

If you would like to arrange more walking and trekking in the surrounding area please let us know. You can walk from the Hmong Village to the waterfall through rice fields and forests under the shade of rosewood trees followed by a picnic lunch and swim at the waterfalls.

On the return to Luang Prabang visit the weaving village of Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xieng Lek, known for its hand-made saa paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: LAOS ~  Fly to Vientiane

After breakfast and a relaxing morning, you will be collected and taken to the airport for your flight to Vientiane. On arrival, your guide and driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel.

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Vientiane: Family Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); S Park Design - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Crowne Plaza - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: LAOS ~ Explore the quaint capital, Vientiane

After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel to begin exploring Vientiane. The highlights include:

Travelbay Laos Tours - Pha That Luang, Vientiene
  • Haw Phra Keo: one of the most interesting and impressive temples in Vientiane, built in 1565.
  • Wat Sisaket: famous for its cloister wall storing thousands of tiny Buddha images.
  • Pha That Luang: Laos' most important monument - a gold covered stupa (pictured).
  • Patuxai: the national monument inspired by the architecture of the Arc de Triomphe. From the top you can get a fantastic view of the city.
  • Talat Sao Market: a great place to do some shopping.

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Vientiane: Family Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); S Park Design - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Crowne Plaza - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: CAMBODIA ~ Fly to Phnom Penh

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and relax until it is time for your transfer to the airport for your flight to Phnom Penh (1.15 hour flight). On arrival in Phnom Penh your local guide and drive will be there to meet you and take you to your hotel.

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7: CAMBODIA ~ Explore Phnom Penh & the Killing Fields

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

Begin your tour this morning with a visit to the Royal Palace. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the palace is now home to the current King. The palace is open to the public except when the King is in residence.

The grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, named so due the floor that is covered by 5,000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilogram.

Please note: When visiting the Royal Palace you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against both their political enemies and many thousands of everyday Cambodians. In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture centre in the country. Please note that the images on display are quite graphic and unsettling.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Killing Fields, Phnom Penh

Then drive to Choeung Ek - The Killing Fields, where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women and children took place. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line.

The Genocide Museum and Killing Fields can be quite a shock and give you much to ponder on. It’s a little different than usual holiday activities, however in our view something the world needs to know about and something we recommend.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: CAMBODIA ~ Travel to Siem Reap via Kompong Thom and Skuon

After breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel for the drive to Kompong Thom (around 4 hours). Along the way, make a short stop to visit Skuon, sometimes known in the local language as "Spiderville." It is famous with international visitors for its fried spiders. The tarantulas are hunted and then deep fried with a history dating back to when food was scarce during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. Apparently they are quite tasty, and are said to be good for the heart and lungs but no obligation at all to try one – we didn’t!

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Santuk Temple, Kompong Thom

Continue on to Kompong Thom and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch continue to Siem Reap and sit back and admire the scenery, watching local life as you pass by. Arrive at Siem Reap late in the afternoon.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: CAMBODIA ~ Discover the temples of Angkor Wat

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups).

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Angkor Wat

Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples. Accompanied by your guide, enter from East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions. The tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The staff at your hotel can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: CAMBODIA ~ Visit a floating village on the Tonle Sap Lake

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Floating Village, Siem Reap

Spend the morning at leisure and in the afternoon visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats.

The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

The lake is quite a phenomenon - in the wet season it covers an area around 10,000km2 and in the dry season around 3,000km2.

Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

Please note: This tour may sometimes be changed due to the water level. In the dry season you may visit a different floating village and the itinerary may change slightly. Your guide will re-confirm the tour for you when you are in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: CAMBODIA ~ More temples of Angkor

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Banteay Srei, Angkor Wat

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 12: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

Today the tour ends. After breakfast you will be taken to the airport in time for your flight or if you would like to extend your time in Cambodia, we can arrange this for you.

Meals included: Breakfast

Yes, with pleasure. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, please contact us for options.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

This tour is a Private Tour. It will be only you and your travel companions in the group and you will travel in a private vehicle with your own personal driver.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, triple share is available. Please contact us for a quote.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Laos and/or Cambodia?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel, if required.

Tourists to Laos & Cambodia require a visa.

For both countries, you can obtain your visa on arrival – you will need a completed application form (usually handed out on the flight into Laos/Cambodia or at the border if entering via land crossing), a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee.

Or you may wish to obtain your visas before you go. For Laos, you can visit this website to find out more information and apply: https://laoevisa.gov.la/ and for Cambodia, you can visit this website: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/home

We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go. To find out the visa requirements for Laos and Cambodia, you can check here with Visalink.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Laos and Cambodia here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit. We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Laos and Cambodia?

Internet access is readily available in tourist areas. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Laos & Cambodia.

You can also purchase a local SIM card for internet access.

Can I use my mobile phone in Laos and Cambodia?

Mobile reception is generally good in urban areas. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have very good network coverage.

Make sure you have global roaming activated and you may prefer to purchase a local SIM card as global roaming can be expensive.

What currency do they use in Laos and Cambodia and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip (LAK) and in Cambodia both the US Dollar and the Cambodia Riel (KHR) are accepted.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. Remember to always have your passport with you as identification when changing money.

There are ATM machines available in the cities. In smaller towns and villages there may be fewer (or none) available.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and in larger shops. Smaller shops, market stalls and in more rural places, there may not be credit card facilities.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Laos to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

When is the best time to travel to Laos / Cambodia?

Laos & Cambodia are popular destinations all year round - you can visit anytime.

Popular times to visit are between November and March when the rainy season has passed and the weather is slgihtly cooler.

The wet season is from May to September (wth the wettest months being August and September) and peak season is December to January.

New Year in Laos (Pi Mai) and Cambodia (Khmer New Year) is celebrated from mid April for around a week and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and there are many water activities on the street. Many people travel home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended.

What clothing should I pack?

The climate in Laos and Cambodia is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

We recommend clothing for a tropical climate, layers for the cooler locations and a raincoat if you plan to visit in the wet season.

It's always a good idea when travelling to have layers and comfortable shoes to cover all eventualities.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Laos / Cambodia?

Laos: Type C (European 2-pin) Type A (North American/Japanese 2-pin) Type B (American 3-pin) Type E (French 2-pin, female earth) Type F (German 2-pin, side clip earth).

Cambodia: Type A (North American/Japanese 2-pin) Type C (European 2-pin)

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Laos / Cambodia there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Please note the below amounts are per person for individual travellers and are based on US Dollars.

Guides: USD 3 - 5 per day
Drivers: USD 2 - 3 per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Currency

Travelbay Laos Tours - Currency

The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip (LAK).

In Cambodia, both the US Dollar and the Cambodia Riel (KHR) are accepted.

In Cambodia, you can withdraw both Riel and US Dollars from ATMs.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and in larger shops. Smaller shops, market stalls and in more rural places, there may not be credit card facilities.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Laos and Cambodia to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Shopping in Laos & Cambodia

Travelbay Laos Tours - Shopping

One of the best places for shopping in Laos in the daily night market in the town centre of Luang Prabang (an easy walk from most hotels). The markets are open from 5pm onwards. In Vientiane there is also the morning market, known as Talat Sao. In Cambodia, the night markets are in the central tourist area near Pub Street.

We personally recommend...

  • Textiles & woven silk - silk weaving is practiced by many of the ethnic groups in Laos and you can find some wonderful silk products (including scarves and shawls). Laos is known not for only its woven silk but also its cotton. Cambodia has a long history of silk and cotton textile production and the colours and designs are unique.
  • Handicrafts - from little Buddhas to elephants statues and mini boats, there are lots of great handicrafts, in particular wooden carvings. You can often purchase these in local villages or at the markets.
