Intro

For a quintessential tour of the gorgeous Laos, this is it. Travel from the UNSECO town of Luang Prabang in the North down to 4000 Islands in the South with all the goodies in between - the dramatic scenery of Vang Vieng, the quaint capital of Vientiane, Pakse, the Bolaven Plateau along with all the wats, stupas, villages, waterfalls and delights that await you. There is one warning: it's highly possible you will fall in love with Laos!

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang

On arrival you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your hotel in the gorgeous town of Luang Prabang.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage town, Luang Prabang is a lovely place to visit. With a laidback atmosphere in a beautiful location on the Mekong River and surrounded by green mountains, you can watch monks wander the streets, visit the many gilded wats (temples), explore the markets, enjoy world class cuisine and more.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Night markets, Luang Prabang

The night markets in Luang Prabang are exceptional and we recommend a visit. They are within walking distance from your hotel (3, 4 and 5 star options) and you can visit them at your leisure.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (Standard); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (Deluxe); Satri House - Deluxe Room (Super Deluxe)

Day 2: Luang Prabang sightseeing and visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves

After breakfast, start with a sightseeing tour of Luang Prabang including the markets, former King's Palace and various wats - Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Visoun and the shrine of Wat Aham. What is a wat you may ask? They are temples or Buddhist monasteries.

After seeing the town, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. Along the way you will get a glimpse of typical Laotian villages.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Pak Ou Caves

Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves - both are home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from a few centimetres to two metres in height.

The caves are a short distance from the village of Ban Xang Hai. Stop here to learn about lao lao (rice whisky) and lao hai (rice wine), before continuing down the Mekong back to Luang Prabang.

Later today and in time for sunset, climb up to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa and incredible sunset views of the city and Mekong River.

Please note: There are around 329 steps to reach the top.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (Standard); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (Deluxe); Satri House - Deluxe Room (Super Deluxe)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Monks, markets, local villages and Kuang Si Waterfall

Travelbay Laos Tours - Monks, Luang Prabang

This morning you may choose to wake up early and participate in the daily morning ritual of saffron-clad monks with their black alms-giving bowls receiving offerings from the local people, including the ubiquitous sticky rice.

Please note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered. We recommend out of respect to have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

From here visit the Phosi Market with its diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin, local tea, chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.

Visit the traditional Hmong village of Ban Na Ouan, known for its textiles, and the Khmu village of Ban Thapen. In Ban Thapen you can see the process of bamboo weaving.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can cool off, enjoy the leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall if you wish.

If you would like to arrange more walking and trekking in the surrounding area please let us know. You can walk from the Hmong Village to the waterfall through rice fields and forests under the shade of rosewood trees followed by a picnic lunch and swim at the waterfalls.

On the return to Luang Prabang visit the weaving village of Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xieng Lek, known for its hand-made saa paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Customer Reviews

I loved Luang Prabang as I hoped I would. Was so much more peaceful than most Asian cities and had a wonderful mix of stunning architecture, gardens, great food and of course lovely people not hassling me. I was the only one on the tour so the guide had a pretty easy job!! Overall a very relaxed, pleasant holiday.

What a fantastic holiday we have had. Cannot fault anything. A wonderful itinerary with the best of guides. We really feel we have experienced the best possible. The organising and pick ups were spot on all the time. Wonderful. All the hotels were excellent and situated near to sights when we had free time to wander on our own. Thank you to everyone at Travelbay.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, please contact us for options.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

This tour is a Private Tour. It will be only you and your travel companions in the group and you will travel in a private vehicle with your own personal driver.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Yes, triple share is available. Please contact us for a quote.

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Laos?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel, if required.

You can obtain your visa on arrival – you will need a completed application form (usually handed out on the flight into Laos or at the border if entering via land crossing), a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee.

Or you may wish to obtain your visa before you go. You can visit this website to find out more information and apply: https://laoevisa.gov.la/

We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go. To find out the visa requirements for Laos, you can check here with Visalink.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Laos here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit. We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Laos?

Internet access is readily available in tourist areas (such as Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Vang Vieng). Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Laos.

You can also purchase a local SIM card for internet access.

Can I use my mobile phone in Laos?

Mobile reception is generally good in urban areas. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have very good network coverage.

Make sure you have global roaming activated and you may prefer to purchase a local SIM card as global roaming can be expensive.

What currency do they use in Laos and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip (LAK).

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. Remember to always have your passport with you as identification when changing money.

There are ATM machines available in the cities. In smaller towns and villages there may be fewer (or none) available.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and in larger shops. Smaller shops, market stalls and in more rural places, there may not be credit card facilities.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Laos to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

When is the best time to travel to Laos?

Laos is a popular destination all year round - you can visit anytime!

The wet season is from May to September and peak season is November to January.

Lao New Year (Pi Mai) is celebrated from mid April for around a week and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and there are many water activities on the street. Many people travel home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended.

What clothing should I pack?

The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

We recommend clothing for a tropical climate, layers for the cooler locations and a raincoat if you plan to visit in the wet season.

It's always a good idea when travelling to have layers and comfortable shoes to cover all eventualities.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Laos?

Type C (European 2-pin) Type A (North American/Japanese 2-pin) Type B (American 3-pin) Type E (French 2-pin, female earth) Type F (German 2-pin, side clip earth).

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Laos there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Laos?

Travelbay strongly recommends travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

Whilst our official office hours are Monday to Friday - 9am to 5.30pm AET (Sydney time) we are regularly in the office outside of these hours and at weekends.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Please note the below amounts are per person for individual travellers and are based on US Dollars.

Guides: USD 3 - 5 per day
Drivers: USD 2 - 3 per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Currency

Travelbay Laos Tours - Currency

Shopping in Laos

Travelbay Laos Tours - Shopping

One of the best places for shopping in Laos in the daily night market in the town centre of Luang Prabang (an easy walk from most hotels). The markets are open from 5pm onwards. In Vientiane there is also the morning market, known as Talat Sao.

We personally recommend...

  • Textiles & woven silk - silk weaving is practiced by many of the ethnic groups in Laos and you can find some wonderful silk products (including scarves and shawls). Laos is known not for only its woven silk but also its cotton. The intricate patterns on many of the textiles are unique to Laos.
  • Handicrafts - from little Buddhas to elephants statues and mini boats, there are lots of great handicrafts, in particular wooden carvings. You can often purchase these in local villages or at the markets.
