Intro

A wonderful tour offering you a great taste of Indochina that includes three countries - Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia. Begin in Luang Prabang and see Laos at its very best. Travel to Vietnam where you'll visit Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh City. End your tour in Siem Reap, home to the majestic temples of Angkor Wat. With a mix of sightseeing and free time, temples, nature, culture and people, this tour is a fantastic way to experience the highlights of Indochina.

Day 1: LAOS ~ Arrival in Luang Prabang

On arrival in Luang Prabang you will be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: LAOS - Sightseeing in Luang Prabang and the Kuang Si Waterfall

Start your adventure with a visit to the morning Phosi Market, considered the biggest market in Luang Prabang. See diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin and local tea among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Kuang Si Waterfalls

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can enjoy the cooling freshness and leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall.

On the way, pass through rice fields and small villages dotted along the country roads.

Head back to Luang Prabang for some sightseeing in the Old Town including Vat Xieng Thong, perhaps the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang and Wat Sene known as one of the most beautiful.

In the late afternoon, in time for sunset, climb to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa where you can enjoy views of the city and Mekong River (please note: there are around 329 steps to reach the top). On the way back to the hotel, stop at the well-known Night Markets, a great place for shopping and local cuisine.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: LAOS - Visit the Pak Ou Caves and local villages

This morning, after breakfast visit the Royal Palace (also the National Museum) before being transferred to the pier for a boat cruise upstream to the Pak Ou Caves.

Travelbay Laos Tours - Pak Ou Caves

Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Arrive at the caves that consist of two large caves - both home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from centimetres to two metres in height.

On your way back to Luang Prabang, stop at Ban Xang Hai village. Learn how they make traditional Lao rice whisky and get the chance to sample its unique flavour. Head to Ban Xang Khong village famous for its hand-made Jute Sar paper and Lao silk weaving before being taken back to your hotel.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: VIETNAM - A day of leisure and a flight to Hanoi

Enjoy the morning at leisure in Luang Prabang before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Hanoi. On arrival in Hanoi you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day as you wish.

Overnight in Hanoi: Gondola Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 5: VIETNAM - Hanoi sightseeing and street food tour

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Tran Quoc Pagoda Hanoi

Enjoy a morning walking tour through the vibrant Hang Be Market, nestled in the heart of the Old Quarter. Your driver and guide will then take you to Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda of its kind in Hanoi, dating back to the 6th century.

From here visit the Temple of Literature, the first University of Vietnam. After lunch take a tour of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Mondays and Fridays).

In the late afternoon you will be collected from your hotel and your guide will take you on a walking street food tour in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour. It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow streets inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 6: VIETNAM - Depart Hanoi and overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay

This morning the cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel for your transfer to Ha Long Bay.

Board your cruise boat for an exploration of the wondrous Ha Long Bay (translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea”) and enjoy one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights.

Enjoy the picturesque scenery and some 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald waters as you cruise through the bay. Amongst the limestone karst are beaches, grottoes and caves. Along the way, anchor for a swim in a secluded cove and visit one of the caves.

Drop anchor for the evening in the Bay and have dinner on board.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you for your stay on the cruise at Ha Long Bay as the boat cannot accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. When you check out of your hotel room in Hanoi take the rest of your luggage to reception where you will be able to store it safely until your return from Ha Long Bay.

Overnight in Ha Long Bay: Oriental Sails - Deluxe cabin or Lavender Cruise – Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Huong Hai Sealife - Suite (4 Star); Athena Luxury Cruise - Athena Executive Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

* Your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay is managed by the cruise company and will include more than 10 people.

Day 7: VIETNAM - Enjoy Ha Long Bay then fly to Ho Chi Minh City

Wake to the gorgeous sights in the bay. After breakfast, relax on board as you cruise back through the Bay to the pier. After brunch return to Hanoi and be taken to the airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival in Ho Chi Minh City you will be met and taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Princess Saigon Central Hotel - Premier Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Premier Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Majestic Saigon - Colonial Pool Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Early light breakfast (around 6.30/7.00 am) and brunch (around 9.30 am)

Day 8: VIETNAM - City tour of Ho Chi Minh City

Please note: You can start todays tour in the morning at 8:00 AM or in the afternoon at 2:00 PM.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Notre Dame Catherdral, Ho Chi Minh City

Either time you choose, you will be collected by your guide to set off on a sightseeing tour of the former capital of French Indochina. Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral and the General Post Office, taking you back in time to the French colonial days gone by.

Continue along Dong Khoi Street stopping at some of the City's most notable landmarks including the Peoples’ Committee Building, the Opera House and the historical Reunification Palace, also known as Independence Palace - famous for where the war ended in Vietnam in 1975.

Later head to the Chinese District of Cho Lon as well as the Binh Tay Market before returning to your hotel where you can either rest or continue to explore the city at your own pace.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Princess Saigon Central Hotel - Premier Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Premier Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Majestic Saigon - Colonial Pool Deluxe Room (5 Star)

The drive is around 2 hours and on arrival in Ben Tre you can explore coconut workshops and the art of mat weaving in local houses. You can relax in the village or wander around observing the locals go about their daily life.

When it is time for lunch, board a Xu Loi - a kind of motorised rickshaw and be taken to a riverside restaurant.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - 10 Day Highlights of Vietnam Tour - Mekong Delta

Day 10: CAMBODIA - Travel to Siem Reap – the gateway to Angkor Wat

Today you are free at leisure until it is time for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. On arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Siem Reap is the gateway to the temples of Angkor Wat and with world class dining, shopping and spas, there is much to explore.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La'Niche D'Angkor Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star), Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star), Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: CAMBODIA - Full Day tour of the majesty and magic of Angkor Wat

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups). Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples. Accompanied by your guide, enter from the East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Angkor Thom South Gate, Temples of Angkor Wat

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions.

The tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The hotel staff can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 12: More temples of Angkor

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Banteay Srei, Angkor Wat

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship of women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back to your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the tour?

You can pretty much choose any date (subject to availability) and we can usually accommodate everyone including short notice and long term bookings.

Is my departure guaranteed?

Once you have paid for your booking and received confirmation of your travel dates from Travelbay, your holiday is guaranteed on your chosen departure date - except in cases of major weather events and alike in which case we do our best to adjust your holiday accordingly.

How much is the tour?

Travelbay provides 3, 4 and 5 Star pricing options, based on twin share (2 people per room). Please see the pricing at the top of the page.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

If you want to add on extra day tours to your free days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Small Group Tour with a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people.

The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available at most hotels.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos have different requirements depending on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos?

WIFI is common in many hotels in the main tourist areas and big cities as are internet cafes. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos including Ha Long Bay.

Can I use my mobile phone or should I get a local SIM card?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have network coverage.

You will need to check with your mobile carrier at home about roaming and charges and make sure global roaming is activated before you leave home.

You can also buy a local SIM when there and use the local network - both for phone calls and mobile data. (This is what we do and find it very easy).

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong, in Laos the Lao Kip. Both the US Dollar and Cambodian Riel are accepted in Cambodia.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

Major credit cards are accepted in larger shops, restaurants and hotels. At smaller family type restaurants, market stalls and in small towns, it's not likely you'll be able to use your credit card.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Is the traffic really scary?

There are lots of scooters in Vietnam and the roads in the main cities are very busy!

The road rules in Vietnam are very different to those in the Western World and because of this some people find it scary. In Vietnam it is more about flow and rhythm and all the traffic moving in the same flow, which then leads to order.

In Vietnam they drive on the right side of the road.

What type of adaptor plug do I need?

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Laos there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Vietnam weathernam Holiday Information -

Vietnam

Vietnam is a destination that you can visit year round.

Below we have attempted to give you an idea of what you might expect in different areas at different times of the year. Of course nobody can truly predict the weather – weather is weather and often has its own ideas. However, with all that in mind late February to May and September seem to have the best odds weather wise!

Winter: Winter in Vietnam is from December through to early February. In the North (Hanoi – Ha Long Bay area) it can be cool and Sapa in the hills North of Hanoi can sometimes see snow. In Central Vietnam (Hoi An area) it can be cool-ish and not such great beach weather. In the South (Ho Chi Minh City area) the weather is still warm.

Spring: March – May is a wonderful time to visit Vietnam and the weather will be getting hotter as you head towards the summer months.

Summer: Summer is from June through to August. At this time of year it can be hot, particularly in the South.

Autumn: September – November the temperature is milder but it can rain substantially in the Central parts (around Hoi An) in October and November, particularly November which is the wettest month.

Rainy season: Different parts of the country see rains at different times. In the North the rains come from April to September, in the Central area in October and November and in the South, from May to September.

We have visited Vietnam at many different times of the year and always loved it!

Cambodia

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons.

Please note April can be very hot. The rains come in May which tends to cool things down. In August, September and October the rains can be heavy during the day

Dry season: November to May
Wet season: June to October
Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Cambodia.

Laos

The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Dry season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October

  • Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Currency

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Holiday Information - Currency

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong, in Laos the Lao Kip. Both the US Dollar and Cambodian Riel are accepted in Cambodia.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Shopping

There is some wonderful shopping in Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos and you may wish to leave space in your luggage so you can fit your shopping in.

We personally recommend:

  • Visiting a tailor - they make great copies of existing pieces so if you have a favourite, you can bring it with you and have the tailor copy it.
  • Scarf shopping - you can find the most wonderful silk and cashmere scarves in Vietnam and Cambodia. If you like scarves, this is a great place to build up your collection :)
  • Handicrafts - you'll find great markets and souvenir shops where you can get all sorts of things from jewellery to lacquerware, lanterns, leather goods and much more!
