Intro

Travelbay's 14 Day Amazing Tour from the South to the far North including Sapa takes you to the highlights of Vietnam at a relaxed pace and at a great price.

Visit the vibrant cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, as well as the gorgeous town of Hoi An. Sample traditional Vietnamese cuisine along the way and learn how to re-create some of those specialities with the help of a local chef. Travel by overnight train to the spectacular hills of Sapa and take an overnight cruise in the wondrous Ha Long Bay. This holiday has it all and more – enjoy the best of Vietnam.

Day 1: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City

On arrival in Ho Chi Minh City you will be met at the airport by your guide and driver and taken to your hotel.

If you arrive early in the day or the day before and would like Travelbay to arrange a day, half day or evening tour (for a small additional fee) please let us know. You can find some sample tours here.

You can relax in the village or wander around observing the locals go about their daily life.

When it is time for lunch, board a Xu Loi - a kind of motorised rickshaw and be taken to a riverside restaurant.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Mekong Delta

After lunch you can either relax at the restaurant or take a bike ride around the lovely countryside. Then take a trip in a sampan through the canals and visit the local Ben Tre market before your transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Hoi An is a gorgeous friendly town in Central Vietnam about a 50 minute drive from Da Nang. You will be here for four nights and could easily enjoy many more. Hoi An has a beach, river, great shopping in the old town, lots of lovely cafes and restaurants, literally hundreds of tailors – an excellent place to have clothes, shoes and prescription glasses made and there are many local attractions to visit.

Next, head to the water and hop into a coracle - a traditional round boat where you can paddle on the canals of the Bay Mau Nipa Forest. This is great fun!

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Cooking Class

Your guide will show you the folk game “bit mat dap nieu”. Then take a short break with local tea before your cooking class with the local chefs. The chefs will teach you how to cook Vietnamese food and after you can enjoy your self-made lunch.

Day 7: Fly to Hanoi and enjoy an evening street food tour

This morning you will be transferred to Da Nang airport for your 1 hour flight to Hanoi.

Spend the afternoon at leisure in Hanoi, known as the cultural capital of Vietnam. Set on the banks of the Red River, with many of the buildings being built during the French occupation, there is a distinct charm to Hanoi.

At around 4pm, you will be collected from your hotel and your guide will take you on a walking street food tour in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour. It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street food in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: Gondola Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 9: Arrival in Lao Cai, picturesque landscapes and colourful hill tribes

Arrive early morning at Lao Cai station. You will be picked up by a local guide and taken on a scenic one hour drive up to the hill station of Sapa.

From there you can take a short 30 minute journey South toward Muong Hoa Valley, a stunning place boasting the largest terraced rice fields in Sapa. If your visit is between May and October, the local harvest period, you will have a chance to see the local farmers in action. It is a nice chance to take in the scenery and a great photo opportunity.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Sapa

The walk takes you from Lao Chai Village of the Black H'mong Minority to the Ta Van Village of the Giay Minority with a stop at the local Catholic Church, taking in the different traditions, cultures and costumes of the two minority groups.

After that, you will return to Sapa and you can spend the rest of your afternoon at your leisure.

Please note: The planned walking for Days 9 and 10 in Sapa is for 3 hours each day and is considered easy trekking. We can adjust the length of the walk to make it either less or more depending on your preference. We can be quite flexible with this and you can plan in advance, or when you are in Sapa you can discuss this with your guide.

Overnight in Sapa: Sunny Mountain Hotel - Deluxe room (3 Star); Sapa Legend Hotel - Superior room (4 Star); Victoria Sapa Resort - Superior room (5 Star)

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Ha Long Bay

Enjoy the picturesque scenery and some 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald waters as you cruise through the bay. Amongst the limestone karst are beaches, grottoes and caves. Along the way, anchor for a swim in a secluded cove and visit one of the caves.

Drop anchor for the evening in the Bay and have dinner on board.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you for your stay on the cruise at Ha Long Bay as the boat cannot accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. When you check out of your hotel room in Hanoi take the rest of your luggage to reception where you will be able to store it safely until your return from Ha Long Bay.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Small Group Tour with a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people.

The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available at most hotels.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Vietnam has different requirements depending on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for Vietnam, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Vietnam here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Vietnam?

WIFI is common in many hotels in the main tourist areas and big cities as are internet cafes. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay.

Can I use my mobile phone or should I get a local SIM card?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have network coverage.

You can also buy a local SIM when there and use the local network - both for phone calls and mobile data. (This is what we do and find it very easy).

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

Major credit cards are accepted in larger shops, restaurants and hotels. At smaller family type restaurants, market stalls and in small towns, it's not likely you'll be able to use your credit card.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Is the traffic really scary?

There are lots of scooters in Vietnam and the roads in the main cities are very busy!

The road rules in Vietnam are very different to those in the Western World and because of this some people find it scary. In Vietnam it is more about flow and rhythm and all the traffic moving in the same flow, which then leads to order.

In Vietnam they drive on the right side of the road.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Vietnam?

Type A (North American/Japanese 2-pin) Type C (European 2-pin).

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Vietnam there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

When is the best time to see the Sapa rice fields?

Sapa is a popular destination and can be visited all year round. What you will see depends on when you travel as the rice fields change at different times of the year according to the growing cycle. Unlike other places in Vietnam that have 2 - 3 crops per year, Sapa only has 1 crop per year – meaning once the rain comes the people start planting.

In the dry season from November to March there isn't too much in the fields. However, the misty mountains, beautiful scenery and cooler temperatures make it a popular time for trekking.

From April to May you will see the farmers out ploughing their fields. Due to the terrain of the fields (terrace style), they can't use ploughing machines and use buffalo instead. The buffalo are like their close friends helping them with the farming work.

As the rain starts around May the fields fill up with water - a favourite time for photographers.

Planting then begins and the fields gradually turn green.

From June to August is the rainy season - the fields are green, but the rain can make the ground muddy which can impact on those wishing to trek. The temperatures are generally hot and humid at this time of year.

September is harvesting season and the fields begin to turn yellow as the rice ripens. Many people find this an ideal time to visit Sapa.

December to February is wintertime. The fields at this time will not be planted with rice but possibly have some snow instead.

Vietnam weather

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Vietnam weathernam Holiday Information -

Vietnam is a destination that you can visit year round.

Below we have attempted to give you an idea of what you might expect in different areas at different times of the year. Of course nobody can truly predict the weather – weather is weather and often has its own ideas. However, with all that in mind late February to May and September seem to have the best odds weather wise!

Winter: Winter in Vietnam is from December through to early February. In the North (Hanoi – Ha Long Bay area) it can be cool and Sapa in the hills North of Hanoi can sometimes see snow. In Central Vietnam (Hoi An area) it can be cool-ish and not such great beach weather. In the South (Ho Chi Minh City area) the weather is still warm.

Spring: March – May is a wonderful time to visit Vietnam and the weather will be getting hotter as you head towards the summer months.

Summer: Summer is from June through to August. At this time of year it can be hot, particularly in the South.

Autumn: September – November the temperature is milder but it can rain substantially in the Central parts (around Hoi An) in October and November, particularly November which is the wettest month.

Rainy season: Different parts of the country see rains at different times. In the North the rains come from April to September, in the Central area in October and November and in the South, from May to September.

We have visited Vietnam at many different times of the year and always loved it!

Interesting facts on Vietnam

  • The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).
  • Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.
  • Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

Visa information

Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam.

You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel.

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Currency

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Holiday Information - Currency

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Shopping in Vietnam

There is some wonderful shopping in Vietnam and you may wish to leave space in your luggage so you can fit your shopping in.

We personally recommend:

  • Visiting a tailor - especially in Hoi An. They make great copies of existing pieces so if you have a favourite, you can bring it with you and have the tailor copy it.
  • Scarf shopping - you can find the most wonderful silk and cashmere scarves in Vietnam. If you like scarves, Vietnam is a great place to build up your collection :)
  • Handicrafts - you'll find great markets and souvenir shops where you can get all sorts of things from jewellery to lacquerware, lanterns, leather goods and much more!

A perfect holiday

Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed our Vietnam trip and to thank you Nikki and the Travelbay team for a perfect holiday. To be honest we were a little apprehensive about organised tours, always preferring to do all our own direct bookings. From the outset our experience with Travelbay and in particular you, was easy, responsive and professional. You listened to us and organised a trip that surpassed our expectations. All the arrangements went perfectly to plan, the guides and drivers in each location were knowledgeable, friendly and couldn’t do enough to enhance our visit. The hotels were all really well located, very comfortable and the Sealife cruise of Lan Ha Bay was spectacular. Thank you so much for probably the easiest, most fuss free and enjoyable overseas trips we have ever taken. I have and will continue to sing the praises of Travelbay and will definitely be in touch with you for our next trip.

Thanks again, we are truly grateful!

Awesome

One word would describe our trip AWESOME!

We had a wonderful time, met some beautiful people and went to some amazing places, particularly in the north. We fell in love with the country, the people, their work ethics and their culture. They could teach us a few things about how to just get on with life with what they have endured historically, we loved their attitude to living.

Hats off to you and the Travelbay team for your organisation of the itinerary and ensuring everything went to plan. We had absolutely no delays or issues in the two weeks we were there, pick up times were all punctual and the guides were amazing with their knowledge of Vietnamese history and places to go.

The guides were all 5 Star and fantastic nice guy's that kept the itinerary running to time. Having good guides is certainly the way to go. We learned so much about Vietnam from them they were enthusiastic and helpful and had a huge knowledge of Vietnamese life and history which we just devoured, it was so interesting.

Well done to you and your team. We had wonderful time thanks to your efficient attention to detail and Vietnam will always be close to our hearts because of it.

Thank you

Congratulations on the swift smooth and smart way you put our tour together for us. It takes effort and time to do this so thank you.

Our trip was fantastic and organised so effectively and efficiently that we werent left wondering if the guide or driver would turn up. Will we make it on time to the airport? Will the guide be here on time? These questions need not be considered because times were kept. The few changes made we were emailed and informed about.

We particularly liked the mix of guided tours which covered all the expected places of interest and the free time. This gave us time to do the bits and pieces we enjoy and to relax. We thought the hotels were great choices because of their cleanliness, tidiness, bar fridges, water and friendly hotel staff. The staff were always helpful and it was nice to spend a few days in each one rather than lots of different places.

Thanks for putting our trip together and understanding what we enjoy and like to do.

Huge Thank You

We just want to say a huge Thank you for your efforts in ensuring our holiday went smoothly. We really did have the most amazing time and could not fault anything. The additional tours we did - bicycle riding/vegetable gardens in Hoi An and the early morning bicycle ride in Hanoi were fantastic. All four guides were very pleasant and polite, and their input was really valuable. I will be using Travelbay again to book tours in different countries as I could not fault their communication nor level of professionalism and expertise. I am considering Sri Lanka and or India for a trip next year.
