ITINERARY

Luang Prabang - Vientiane - Phnom Penh - Siem Reap: 12 days

The combination of Laos and Cambodia makes for a very special holiday.

In laid-back Laos the pace of life is a notch down from other Asian countries, the people are lovely, the landscape is spectacular, the food is delicious and travelling here is simply a joy.

Cambodia is a fascinating country to visit - from the mighty Khmer Empire that built the temple of Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world, to the more recent history of the Khmer Rouge and the brutal war that ravaged the country in the late 1970's.

This is a Private Tour meaning you will have the service of your own personal guide, driver and private car. Travelbay can cater for any size group but it will only be YOUR group and we will provide a suitably sized vehicle. You can select any date (subject to availability, with very few exclusions and please give us at least 30 days notice). We think these tours are very special and hope you will too!

Travelbay Tips: Arrive early or stay an extra night - most people love Laos. Another option is to pair this tour up with one of our Vietnam or Myanmar tour packages.

* Price includes 11 nights' accommodation, 2 internal flights, your own private guides and drivers, all transfers, 13 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights from your country of origin.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Laos/Cambodia are approximately $900 - $1200 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang - Laos

On arrival, you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your hotel in the gorgeous town of Luang Prabang. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage town, Luang Prabang is a special place to visit and has much to offer from gilded wats (temples) to outstanding natural beauty, delicious cuisine and more.

The night markets in Luang Prabang are exceptional and we recommend a visit, they are within walking distance from your hotel (3, 4 and 5 star options) and you can visit them at your leisure.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Sightseeing and visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves

After breakfast, start with a sightseeing tour of Luang Prabang including the markets and former King's Palace. Luang Prabang is possibly the best-preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. The tranquility and charm of this town combined with the incredible natural scenery and cultural sights make it one of the most delightful places to visit in Laos.

After seeing the town, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou CavesAlong the way, you will get a glimpse of typical Laotian villages. Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves - both are home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from mere centimetres to two meters in height.

After the caves visit Ban Xang Hai, a popular village for sampling traditional rice whisky which is produced here. Then return to Luang Prabang by boat.

Later today and in time for sunset, climb up to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa and incredible sunset views of the city and Mekong River.

Please note: There are around 329 steps to reach the top.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Local markets and the Kuang Si Waterfall

This morning you may choose to wake up early and participate in the daily early morning ritual of saffron-clad monks with their black alms-giving bowls receiving offerings from the local people, including the ubiquitous sticky rice.

Please Note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered so out of respect please have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

From here you can visit the Phosi Market where you will see diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin and local tea among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit the Ban Ouay, Hmong Hill tribe and others in the Khmu village.

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can enjoy the cooling freshness and leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall.

If you would like to arrange more walking and trekking of the surrounding area please let us know. You can walk from the Hmong Village to the waterfall through rice fields and forests under the shade of rosewood trees followed by a picnic lunch and swim at the waterfalls.

On the return to Luang Prabang visit Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xienglek, well known for its hand-made Jute Sar paper.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

  • Haw Phra Keo: one of the most interesting and impressive temples in Vientiane, built in 1565.
  • Wat Sisaket: famous for its cloister wall storing thousands of tiny Buddha images.
  • Pha That Luang: Laos' most important monument - a gold covered stupa.
  • Patuxai: the national monument inspired by the architecture of the Arc de Triomphe. From the top you can get a fantastic view of the city.

Day 7: Explore Phnom Penh and visit the Killing Fields

Begin your tour this morning with a visit to the Royal Palace. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the palace is now home to the current King. Within the palace grounds you will find the coronation hall, an open air theatre for the Royal Dance Troupe, and the King’s private residence. The palace is open to the public except when the King is in residence. The grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, named so due the floor that is covered by 5,000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilogram.

Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against both their political enemies and many thousands of everyday Cambodians. In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture centre in the country. Please note that the images on display are quite graphic and unsettling.

Then drive to Choeung Ek - The Killing Fields, where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women and children took place. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line.

The Genocide Museum and Killing Fields can be quite a shock and give you much to ponder on. It’s a little different than usual holiday activities, however in our view something the world needs to know about and something we recommend.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel.

Please note: When visiting the Royal Palace you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Palace Gate Hotel & Resort - Royal Deluxe Room with View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: Travel to Siem Reap via Kompong Thom and Skuon aka "Spiderville"

After breakfast, you will be collected for the drive to Kompong Thom (around 4 hours).  Along the way, make a short stop to visit Skuon, sometimes known in the local language as "Spiderville." It is famous with international visitors for its fried spiders. The tarantulas are hunted and then deep fried with a history dating back to when food was scarce during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. Apparently they are quite tasty, and are said to be good for the heart and lungs but no obligation at all to try one – we didn’t!

Continue on to Kompong Thom and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch continue to Siem Reap and sit back and admire the scenery, watching local life as you pass by. Arrive at Siem Reap late in the afternoon.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Discover the temples of Angkor

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups). Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples. Accompanied by your guide, enter from East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions. The tour also visits the Royal EnclosurePhimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The hotel staff can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Visit a floating village in Siem Reap on the Tonle Sap Lake

Spend the morning at leisure and in the afternoon visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats. The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

The lake is quite a phenomenon - in the wet season it covers an area around 10,000km2 and in the dry season around 3,000km2.

Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

Please note: This tour may sometimes be changed due to the water level. In the dry season you may visit a different floating village and the itinerary may change slightly. Your guide will re-confirm the tour for you when you are in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: More temples of Angkor

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples and were the ones Nikki and Nicola most enjoyed on their visit in March 2019.

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 12: Time to go home or on to your next adventure

This tour starts in Luang Prabang, Laos and ends in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:

Laos
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Laos. This can be obtained on arrival and you will need a completed application form (the form is given to you on arrival), a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee of around US$37.

Cambodia
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia.

You can either obtain your visa on arrival in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap or you can apply online before departure.

To apply online, please click on the following link: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/home - we found it to be a very quick and simple process.

You will need to complete your details and upload a passport photo and scanned copy of your passport. Your passport photo should have been taken within the last 12 months. The visa fee is payable at the time of application.

Once your visa has been processed you will be sent an email with the visa – you will need to print 2 copies and take them with you.

Please note: The visa is only valid for 3 months from the time of application. We therefore recommend not applying too far in advance. The processing time is usually fairly quick providing there are no complications with your passport or application.

If you would like to apply for your visa on arrival you will need the following:

  • A completed visa application form (you can obtain the application form on your arrival)
  • Your current passport with at least 6 months validity
  • One recent passport sized photograph
  • Appropriate visa fee. Last time we checked in 2019 this was USD30. It is best to have this in cash (US Dollars) for when you arrive.

Currency information:
The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip.

Both the US Dollar and the Cambodian Riel are accepted in Cambodia.

There are ATM machines available (in Cambodia you can withdraw USD).

If you have any plans to use your card overseas, you should let your bank know to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Tipping and tour guides:
Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Safety tips:
Please remember to take care of yourself and your belongings at all times when travelling. We recommend using an over the shoulder bag /handbag with a zip to keep your belongings safe and secure.

When in Phnom Penh please be extra alert as when we (Nikki and Nicola) visited, our tour guide and driver informed us there had been a few incidences of tourists having their mobile phones snatched whilst in the street taking photos – also good not to flash your wallet about. None of our customers have had any issues to date and neither did we. We do have the extra protection of the drivers and guides – however still good to always stay alert and sensible!

Extra travel tips:
When visiting temples and palaces (including Angkor Wat) you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

Take extra water, especially on visits to the temples. It is hot in Cambodia and Laos and whilst your tour guide will have some water for you in the car, it is likely you will need more than one small bottle.

Climate:
The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons.

Please note April can be very hot. The rains come in May which tends to cool things down. In August, September and October the rains can be heavy during the day

Dry season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October

Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Laos & Cambodia.

The New Year is celebrated from April 13 – 16 and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and there are many water activities on the street. Many people travel home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended.

Population: 6.9 million

Language: Lao (closely related to Thai) and Khmer (Cambodia)

Predominant religion: Buddhism

Some interesting facts:
Laos was once called Lan Xang which translates to "kingdom of a million elephants".

Laos has been conquered by the Thai, the French and the Japanese. It gained its independence in 1949 from the French.

Laos has been labelled the most bombed country in the world. It is estimated that during the Vietnam war, more than all the bombs dropped on Europe during World War II were dropped in Laos.

Luang Prabang has a curfew of 11.30pm. All businesses are required to be closed by this time except for the bowling alley.

It's hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.

    Thank you

Congratulations on the swift smooth and smart way you put our tour together for us. It takes effort and time to do this so thank you.

Our trip was fantastic and organised so effectively and efficiently that we werent left wondering if the guide or driver would turn up. Will we make it on time to the airport? Will the guide be here on time? These questions need not be considered because times were kept. The few changes made we were emailed and informed about.

We particularly liked the mix of guided tours which covered all the expected places of interest and the free time. This gave us time to do the bits and pieces we enjoy and to relax. We thought the hotels were great choices because of their cleanliness, tidiness, bar fridges, water and friendly hotel staff. The staff were always helpful and it was nice to spend a few days in each one rather than lots of different places.

Thanks for putting our trip together and understanding what we enjoy and like to do.

    What a fantastic holiday

What a fantastic holiday we have had. Cannot fault anything. A wonderful itinerary with the best of guides. We really feel we have experienced the best possible. The organising and pick ups were spot on all the time. Wonderful. All the hotels were excellent and situated near to sights when we had free time to wander on our own. Thank you to everyone at Travelbay.
