Baby elephants are dependent on their mums for the first 2 - 3 years and often stay together much longer. The orphanage is also home to injured elephants and those who have been displaced due to loss of their natural environment.

Here you can watch the elephants play and bathe in the river – a visit is sure to leave you with a smile on your face :)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4: Delight in the sights of Sigiriya & the ancient city of Polonnaruwa

This morning visit the spectacular Sigiriya - a world heritage site, also known as Lion Rock due to the huge lion's paws carved into the bedrock. A rock that rises out of the jungle with a flat-topped summit, it is home to ruins of an ancient city. The views from the top are astounding and Sigiriya is a highlight of any trip to Sri Lanka.

Please note: To get to the top there are a series of staircases.

Later in the day visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa - a place where Kings once ruled. Get a taste of glories gone by, see the Royal Palace complex, the Quadrangle and the spectacular Gal Vihare complex of four massive images of the Buddha, cut from a single slab of granite.

If you would like to include a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park, we can provide you with a quote to add this in. Please note, with this option you will need to start out early in the morning and won’t return to your hotel until early evening.

Overnight in Habarana: Cinnamon Lodge - Superior Room (4 Star Resort)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple and travel to Kandy

After breakfast, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple complex - an amazing temple that is built underneath a huge rock. This temple is in use today and has been since the 3rd century BC. You can explore the cave temple, the rock paintings and over 150 Buddha statues.

Continue on to Kandy (approximately 2 hours). En route visit the Spice Garden in Matale. On arrival in Kandy you will be taken to your hotel for the night.

Overnight in Kandy: Cinnamon Citadel - Superior Room (4 Star Deluxe Hotel)

Day 6: The exotic city of Kandy and the Buddha's tooth!

Set on a plateau amongst the rainforest with mountain views from every angle, the city of Kandy is a lovely place to visit. A UNESCO World Heritage Site -  traditional life, folklore and legends have been kept alive in this small city. The surrounding villages are the heart of Sri Lanka's handicraft industry - these include the world’s best blue and star sapphires as well as many other varieties of precious stones and silver and gold jewellery.

Enjoy a city tour of Kandy including the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - home to a tooth of Buddha (you won't actually see the tooth as it is kept in a golden casket).

In the evening enjoy a cultural dance show.

Overnight in Kandy: Cinnamon Citadel - Superior Room (4 Star Deluxe Hotel)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7: Discover Nuwara Eliya, its tea and cooler climate

After breakfast at your hotel you will be collected and taken to the train station in Kandy for a scenic and famous train ride to Nanu Oya*. This is a wonderful opportunity to sit back and enjoy the scenery - the train route passes through a beautiful part of the countryside.

In Nanu Oya, you will be met at the train station and driven on to Nuwara Eliya. Translating to "City of Light" this lovely town is also called Little England as the effects of colonial days are still felt here and the climate is somewhat cooler. Home to the famous Ceylon Tea, some of the world's best tea comes from this area. The mountain slopes are covered in the bright green tea plantations, all adding to the unique character of Nuwara Eliya.

*Please note: We do our best to book the trains and the majority of the time we can arrange either First Class or Second Class seats. At times we may not be able to book the train for you - there are some government controls and regulations around the booking process. If we are not able to book you on the train we will arrange your transfer by car - the journey by road is also picturesque and you can stop at various points along the way including some waterfalls.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya: Araliya Green City - Superior Room (5 Star Hotel)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 8: A walk in Horton Plains National Park

Today set off early for Horton Plains for a trek in the National Park.

Horton Plains National Park is a 1.5 hour drive from Nuwara Eliya and is on a plateau in the central highlands near the village of Ohiya. The views of the surrounding grasslands and cloud forest are spectacular.

The trek today is 9km and can take around 3 hours depending on each individual. A reasonable level of fitness is required and we recommend good walking shoes. If you would prefer not to do the hike we can arrange a visit to the Seetha Amman temple followed by High Tea at The Grand Hotel (and it is very grand).

On the way back to the hotel enjoy a city tour of Nuwara Eliya visiting Gregory Lake, Strawberry Farm and the local bazaars.

Overnight in Nuwara EliyaAraliya Green City - Superior Room (5 Star Hotel)

Day 9: Drive to Yala and visit Ravana waterfall

After breakfast you will be collected and driven to Yala. Along the way visit Ravana waterfall in Ella before continuing on to Yala. On arrival at Yala, you will be taken to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

The accommodation in Yala is at Cinnamon Wild, a resort within Yala National Park. You can often see wildlife on the road in and around the resort. The setting is very special and an experience itself. At night (between 6pm and 6am) you need an escort to take you between your chalet and the restaurant – you can call the escort anytime and they will have a torch to scare any animals away. The staff also communicate as to where the wildlife are. This is a jungle experience and due to the location of the resort, whilst the resort itself is 5 Star, the room maybe considered less than 5 Star.

Overnight in Yala: Cinnamon Wild - Jungle Chalet (5 Star Resort)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 10: Take a safari in Yala National Park

Discover Yala National Park - Sri Lanka's most famous National Park with a morning and afternoon safari.

Yala was a former hunting ground under British rule and is now protected with National Park status and has been since 1938. It is said to have the world's biggest concentration of leopards as well as being home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, peacocks, sambars, jackals, spotted deer and more.

*Please note that the main section of Yala National Park closes for a period in September. This is during the mating season and allows the animals to mate without the disturbance of jeeps. If your tour is during a time when this section of the park is closed we will arrange a wildlife safari in Lungamvahera National Park (a different section of the Yala National Park area).

Overnight in Yala: Cinnamon Wild - Jungle Chalet (5 Star Resort)

Continue on to Bentota where you will be taken to your hotel.

Travelbay Sri Lanka Tours 14D Map

How to get there:

This tour starts and ends  in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

    Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

    Currency information:
The currency used in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee.

What currency to take with you is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

    Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Sri Lanka has experienced outbreaks of Dengue Fever in the recent past. We recommend speaking with your doctor about Dengue Fever if you have any concerns. The best form of protection against Dengue Fever is to simply protect yourself from mosquito bites. We recommend wearing long pants and tops along with a good quality mosquito repellent (with a concentration of at least 10% DEET, although DEET should be avoided on young children). You can also travel with a plug-in mosquito repellent to use in your room at night.

    Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with a wet and dry season. Parts of the hill country can be temperate and cool. Colombo lies 7° North of the equator and so temperatures are hot all year round with minimal difference throughout the year. The average temperature is around 28°C to 30°C. May to August are the warmest months and this coincides with the rainy season.

Monsoon season: There are 2 different monsoons in Sri Lanka - one relating to the Northern and Eastern regions and the other relating to the Southern and Western areas. It is the latter that is relevant for this particular tour and is called the Yala monsoon. It brings rain between May and September. In general when it does rain, the downpours are usually short and sharp.

Dry season: In the South Western areas of Sri Lanka the dry season runs from December to March.

Peak season: The end of December and into February is peak season for travel in Sri Lanka.

September to April is a popular time for visitors’ due to the milder and cool climate.

In February, Chinese New Year is celebrated and there can be an increase in tourists at this time of year.

July and August is a popular time to travel to Kandy as the Esala Perahera festival is on at this time (the dates vary each year according to the moon).

    Tipping tips:

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the waiters, porters, guides and drivers. Tips are not included in the bills for hotels, transport companies or any other suppliers. At hotels and restaurants, about 10% of the bill is usually acceptable. Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. It is a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Although we give below a few general guidelines, it is to be remembered that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore please view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Please note the below amounts are per person for individual travellers and are based on US Dollars.

    • Driver/Guide: USD 5 - 10 per day
    • Driver for Jeep Safari: USD 3 - 5 per ride
    • Bell boys: USD 0.50 per bag
    • Room service and restaurants: about 10% of the bill total (unless service charge is mentioned as included)

      Population: 21 million

In Sri Lanka several languages are spoken with Tamil, Sinhala and English being the official languages.

      Predominant religion:
In Sri Lanka around 70% of the population are Theravada Buddhists followed by Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

      Some interesting facts:
Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon before 1972.

In Sri Lanka each full moon is public holiday. These days are called Poya Days and all the moons have their own name. Many shops and businesses are closed on Poya days and the sale of meat and alcohol is forbidden.

In the 16th century Sri Lanka was a Portuguese colony and in the 17th century it was a Dutch colony. It was ceded to the British in 1796 and was under British rule until it gained independence in 1948.
