Cruise the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay and visit the ancient capital of Hue. Learn some traditional Vietnamese culinary skills in Hoi An and visit the Mekong Delta. From the moment you are met at the airport to the end of your holiday discover the warmth and grace of the Vietnamese people, their openness to life and have some fun along the way.

On arrival in Hanoi you will be met at the airport by your guide and driver and taken to your hotel.

Day 2: Overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay

This morning the cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel for your transfer to Ha Long Bay.

Board your cruise boat for an exploration of the wondrous Ha Long Bay (translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea”) and enjoy one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Ha Long Bay

Enjoy the picturesque scenery and some 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald waters as you cruise through the bay. Amongst the limestone karst are beaches, grottoes and caves. Along the way, anchor for a swim in a secluded cove and visit one of the caves.

Drop anchor for the evening in the Bay and have dinner on board.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you for your stay on the cruise at Ha Long Bay as the boat cannot accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. When you check out of your hotel room in Hanoi take the rest of your luggage to reception where you will be able to store it safely until your return from Ha Long Bay.

Overnight in Ha Long Bay: Oriental Sails - Deluxe cabin or Lavender Cruise – Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Huong Hai Sealife - Suite (4 Star); Athena Luxury Cruise - Athena Executive Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The complex includes the Citadel, the Yellow Imperial City and in the centre the Forbidden Purple city Tu Cam Thanh where the Emperor lived.

Next, head to the water and hop into a coracle - a traditional round boat where you can paddle on the canals of the Bay Mau Nipa Forest. This is great fun!

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Cooking Class

Your guide will show you the folk game “bit mat dap nieu”. Then take a short break with local tea before your cooking class with the local chefs. The chefs will teach you how to cook Vietnamese food and after you can enjoy your self-made lunch.

Day 9: Adventure to the Cu Chi Tunnels

Today you will visit the Cu Chi Tunnels - a network of tunnels stretching over 250 km and one of the most famous and historical aspects of the Vietnam War. The tunnel system was created in 1948 to assist the Viet Minh as they fought the French for independence. Digging and building of tunnels continued over the next 25 years until it was an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centers.

The tunnels could house thousands of people who lived almost entirely underground for years. There, people led relatively ‘normal’ lives, which included getting married and raising children. During the American War, the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a free fire zone which meant it was therefore heavily attacked and bombed.

Sections of the tunnels are now open for visitors. It is a fascinating insight into the lives of the local Vietnamese during the American/Vietnam War as well as the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Vietnamese.

For those who are interested, there is an opportunity to fire off rounds from a war era M16 or AK47 at the nearby firing range. This activity is optional and fees for this are not included.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Princess Saigon Central Hotel - Premier Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Majestic Hotel - Colonial Pool Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10: Visit Cai Be and the Floating Markets in the Mekong Delta

Depart early this morning (around 7:30am) to arrive at the Cai Be Floating Market around 10am. Along the way stop in the town of Tan An that overlooks the picturesque flat rice fields.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Floating Markets, Cai Be

On arrival in Cai Be, set off by motor boat to visit the Cai Be Floating Market and watch the locals trading fruit and many other commodities on board their vessels. Visit a small family business to see how coconut candy and crispy rice popcorn are made. Then wander into the small villages to visit the orchard and fruit plantation, accompanied by traditional southern Vietnamese folk music.

Keep cruising to a series of small canals to experience the charms of the Upper Mekong Delta. Arrive in Tan Phong island where you can join to a cooking class and learn how to prepare special Vietnamese dishes. Enjoy your self-made lunch along with fresh river food served in the garden. After lunch you may like to relax in the hammocks.

In the afternoon, you can cycle around the village path with fruit orchards and bonsai garden. Meet the local islanders to learn more about the local daily life in the Mekong delta.

At around 3pm, take a boat ride back to Cai Be where your driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Princess Saigon Central Hotel - Premier Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Majestic Hotel - Colonial Pool Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Additional details

*All accommodation and hotels are subject to change. If the stated hotel is not available a hotel of a similar standard will be booked.

On arrival you will be met by your guide and in each location you will have a different guide.

We like to leave a little bit of space in the itinerary for leisure and for people to do their own thing. However, if you would like to participate in more tours or excursions during your leisure time, you can find some examples of day tours here. Please note you will need to pay for any additional tours you choose to book that are not part of the existing itinerary. We can provide you with a quote.

If you would like a quote for your international flights to and from Vietnam, please let us know. Likewise, if you would like any stopovers or travel insurance, we would be happy to provide you with a quote.

Travelbay Tip: Day 1 of this tour is the day you arrive. Many people whose flights arrive in the evening, choose to arrive a day earlier to give themselves time to settle in and see a bit of Hanoi, as on the morning of Day 2 you will be collected after breakfast and taken to Ha Long Bay. Should you wish to arrive a day earlier, we’d be happy to arrange accommodation at the same hotel you will be staying at on your tour. You will need to pay for the extra night but you will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver at no extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the tour?

You can pretty much choose any date (subject to availability) and we can usually accommodate everyone including short notice and long term bookings.

Is my departure guaranteed?

Travelbay provides 3, 4 and 5 Star pricing options, based on twin share (2 people per room). Please see the pricing at the top of the page.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

How much is the tour?

Travelbay provides 3, 4 and 5 Star pricing options, based on twin share (2 people per room). Please see the pricing at the top of the page.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

If you want to add on extra day tours to your free days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Small Group Tour with a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people.

The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available at most hotels.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Vietnam has different requirements depending on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for Vietnam, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Vietnam here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Vietnam?

WIFI is common in many hotels in the main tourist areas and big cities as are internet cafes. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay.

Can I use my mobile phone or should I get a local SIM card?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have network coverage.

You will need to check with your mobile carrier at home about roaming and charges and make sure global roaming is activated before you leave home.

You can also buy a local SIM when there and use the local network - both for phone calls and mobile data. (This is what we do and find it very easy).

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

Major credit cards are accepted in larger shops, restaurants and hotels. At smaller family type restaurants, market stalls and in small towns, it's not likely you'll be able to use your credit card.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Is the traffic really scary?

There are lots of scooters in Vietnam and the roads in the main cities are very busy!

The road rules in Vietnam are very different to those in the Western World and because of this some people find it scary. In Vietnam it is more about flow and rhythm and all the traffic moving in the same flow, which then leads to order.

In Vietnam they drive on the right side of the road.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Vietnam?

Type A (North American/Japanese 2-pin) Type C (European 2-pin).

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Vietnam there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Vietnam?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

Whilst our official office hours are Monday to Friday - 9am to 5.30pm AET (Sydney time) we are regularly in the office outside of these hours and at weekends.

Feel free to ring at any time before 7:30pm - 7 days a week - 365 days a year. If we are busy on other calls or not available please leave a message including your phone number and area code and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

Vietnam weather

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Vietnam weathernam Holiday Information -

Vietnam is a destination that you can visit year round.

Below we have attempted to give you an idea of what you might expect in different areas at different times of the year. Of course nobody can truly predict the weather – weather is weather and often has its own ideas. However, with all that in mind late February to May and September seem to have the best odds weather wise!

Winter: Winter in Vietnam is from December through to early February. In the North (Hanoi – Ha Long Bay area) it can be cool and Sapa in the hills North of Hanoi can sometimes see snow. In Central Vietnam (Hoi An area) it can be cool-ish and not such great beach weather. In the South (Ho Chi Minh City area) the weather is still warm.

Spring: March – May is a wonderful time to visit Vietnam and the weather will be getting hotter as you head towards the summer months.

Summer: Summer is from June through to August. At this time of year it can be hot, particularly in the South.

Autumn: September – November the temperature is milder but it can rain substantially in the Central parts (around Hoi An) in October and November, particularly November which is the wettest month.

Rainy season: Different parts of the country see rains at different times. In the North the rains come from April to September, in the Central area in October and November and in the South, from May to September.

We have visited Vietnam at many different times of the year and always loved it!

Interesting facts on Vietnam

  • The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).
  • Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.
  • Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

Visa information

Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam.

You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel.

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Currency

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Holiday Information - Currency

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Shopping in Vietnam

There is some wonderful shopping in Vietnam and you may wish to leave space in your luggage so you can fit your shopping in.

We personally recommend:

  • Visiting a tailor - especially in Hoi An. They make great copies of existing pieces so if you have a favourite, you can bring it with you and have the tailor copy it.
  • Scarf shopping - you can find the most wonderful silk and cashmere scarves in Vietnam. If you like scarves, Vietnam is a great place to build up your collection :)
  • Handicrafts - you'll find great markets and souvenir shops where you can get all sorts of things from jewellery to lacquerware, lanterns, leather goods and much more!

We had such a wonderful time

We had such a wonderful time in Vietnam and we thank you for all your preparations that ensured everything went according to plan. We found each of the guides to be punctual, friendly and welcoming – they went out of their way to cater to our needs and answer any questions we had. There was a great balance for us, in following the tour set along with free time to do our own thing. The hotels were of a very good standard especially Hoi An where the rooms were first class and the buffets amazing. We really enjoyed the Gala Dinner on New Year’s Eve and could not believe the array of artistically presented food!

We would not hesitate in recommending your company to fellow travellers. You were very easy to work with in building a holiday that our family will remember with great fondness for ever!

Excellent

We found the organisation excellent. All the guides were very prompt, well informed and helpful. Generally the hotels were good. We particularly found the Hanoi Hotel, (Hanoi Pearl) very good with pleasant helpful staff and very well located just around the corner from the lake. The Athena Elegance was good too especially as we had a balcony. In Hue (Eldora Hotel) the hotel room was excellent. We would have like another day there. The hotel and staff were very good in Hoi An,(Belle Maison Hadana). I loved the pool and atmosphere around it. They had a Vietnamese feast one evening which we liked. The excursion (additional day trip) I liked the best was our trip to Ninh Binh, a really great day visiting a monastery and then the wonderful row boat ride through tunnels.

Thank you Ladies

Thank You Ladies, I just wanted to say what a great time we had in Vietnam! We were so glad that we booked with you all. We had a great experience for our first time there. We had some wonderful guides and became friends with them all. One of our girls even went out of her way, she wanted to come back in the night and have a drink with us! She took us to a rooftop bar that we would never have found and we had a great night listening to a band! My husband loved it. We tried lots of traditional things including egg coffee, fruit, Bun Cha and lots of other things! Overall we had many great days with the tours always on time and great hotels! Thank you all so much for our amazing adventure!

The tour was fantastic

The Vietnam 11 day tour was fantastic and everyone had a great time. It really is a well put together great value for money package where you are able to explore a lot of Vietnam with the tours and still have enough chill time.

The boys highlights were the kayaking in Ha Long Bay and the bicycle foodie tour in Hoi An. The boys are fussy eaters but couldn't get enough of the variety of the Vietnam food and tried absolutely everything. The food just kept coming on the Ha Long Bay Cruise and we all loved the various opportunities at the short cooking lessons along the other destinations.

The adults liked best the Ha Long Bay cruise, a great relaxing start to the holiday and Hoi An where we could have easily spent longer. The old town and the lanterns at night are truly spectacular.

The 3 and 4 star hotels we stayed at were all really good and you could not fault there locations. The staff at all the hotels were so welcoming, engaging and accommodating.

Sincere thanks to the Travelbay Team for putting this memorable family tour together for us. Your organisation skills are second to none.
