ITINERARY

Enjoy Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and more on this 6 day tour

Cambodia is one of those must see places that you just have to visit at least once. Of course once you have been once you will want to go again and again!

Cambodia is particularly famous for its awesome beyond words temples as well as its more recent history of the Khmer Rouge and a brutal war that ravaged the country in the late 70's. You will also discover a nation of friendly people with big hearts, beautiful nature, floating villages, a touch of the colonial French, yummy food and so much more.

On this delightful 6 day Private Tour discover Angkor Wat, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. It is a great tour to either do on its own as a short break or add it on to one of our Vietnam, Myanmar or Laos tours. If you want to stay on longer in Cambodia, let us know and we can arrange it for you. We also specialise in Tailor Made Tours - feel free to contact us for more information.

This is a Private Tour meaning you get your own personal guide, driver and private car. Travelbay can cater for any size group but it will only be YOUR group and we will provide a suitably sized vehicle. You can select any date (subject to availability, with very few exclusions and please give us at least 30 days notice). We think these tours are very special and hope you will too!

* Price includes 1 domestic flight, 5 nights' accommodation, private transfers, your own personal guide and driver, 7 meals and more. Price does not include international flights to Cambodia.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Siem Reap are approximately $1000-$1200 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Siem Reap

Upon arriving in Siem Reap, a representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Discover the temples of Angkor Wat

Today is a classic one-day tour of the temples of Angkor Wat. The day begins at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, the Bayon. The Bayon holds 54 towers decorated with more than 200 enigmatically smiling stone faces. The morning tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm, made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the famous Angkor Wat – best preserved of all the Angkor temples. Time is allowed for a thorough exploration of this huge architectural wonder before climbing to the top of ancient Pre Rup temple to watch the sunset over the jungle.

After the day's touring you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: Visit a floating village in Siem Reap on the Tonle Sap Lake

Spend the morning at leisure and in the afternoon visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats. The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

By visiting a local home you get a better understanding of life on the lake and your guide would be more than happy to translate your questions to your hosts. Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

This tour may sometimes be changed to the morning due to the water level (high or low) - your guide will re-confirm the time for the tour when you are in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: Fly to Phnom Penh

Spend the day at leisure until it is time for your short flight to Phnom Penh - your driver will collect you from your hotel and take you to the airport. On arrival in Phnom Penh, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Check in and relax, spend the afternoon at leisure discovering the capital city.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel & Residence - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Explore Phnom Penh and visit the Killing Fields

Begin your tour this morning with a visit to the Royal Palace overlooking the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the palace is now home to the reigning monarch. Within the palace grounds you will find the coronation hall, an open air theatre for the Royal Dance Troupe, and the King’s private residence. The grounds are open to the public except when the King is in residence. The grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, it's floor covered by 5,000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilogram.

Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against both their political enemies and many thousands of everyday Cambodians. In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture centre in the country. Please note that the images on display are quite graphic and unsettling.

Then drive to Choeung Ek - The Killing Fields, where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women and children took place. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line. The large mass grave pits have all but gone, however the stupa filled with skulls is a stark reminder of the recent history.

In the late afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel & Residence - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: Time to go home or on to your next adventure

Today the tour ends. After breakfast you will be taken to the airport in time for your flight.

Meals included: Breakfast

Travelbay Cambodia - 6 Day tour

How to get there:
This tour starts in Siem Reap and ends in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia.

A visa can be obtained on arrival in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. You will need the following information:

  • A completed visa application form (you can obtain the application form on your arrival)
  • Your current passport with at least 6 months validity
  • One recent passport sized photograph
  • Appropriate visa fee. Last time we checked in July 2018 this was USD37. It is best to have this in cash (US Dollars) for when you arrive.

Currency information:
The currency used in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel. The USD is also widely accepted.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Climate:
Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons. Whilst it does rain in the wet season, there is no need to put off travelling at this time. The temples of Angkor Wat are at their most picturesque during the wet season and the forest comes to life.

Dry season: November to May
Wet season: June to October
Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Cambodia.

The New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey)) is celebrated from April 13 – 16 and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and many people travel home to their families. Travel at this time is not recommended.

Population: 15.15 million

Language: Khmer

Predominant religion: Buddhism (95%)

Some interesting facts:
It's hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.

Definitely one of the best places we have visited

I had the absolute pleasure of using this wonderful company when travelling to Cambodia. I cannot fault TRAVELBAY for the private tour myself and travel buddy took with them. Right from the conception and planning of this tour Nikki and Nicola were right there online helping my friend and I through the planning stages. If we wanted a change of plans it wasnt a problem. Nikki and Nicola were always close by online enjoying our adventures through our videos and pics we were sending them. THANK YOU for an amazing carefree holiday. I recommend this company to everyone I speak to and have no hesitation in planning another with them.

We really enjoyed our tour

We really enjoyed our tour. Everything was like clockwork. Having everything organised took the pressure off us. We had time to ourselves to do shopping, see museums etc. It was very well balanced. It was absolutely great. Just terrific.
