Day 1: Arrival in Kunming

Upon arriving in Kunming, your tour guide and driver will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax, or step out onto the city for a little adventure of your own.

Overnight in Kunming: Kunming Jinjiang Hotel - Standard Double Room (3 Star)

Day 2: The Stone Forest of Kunming

No trip to Kunming is complete without a visit to the amazing Stone Forest. After breakfast you will be collected by your guide and driver for the 1.5 hour drive to Shilin, the Stone Forest. Walk through the site and marvel at the 270 million year old limestone karst formation of tightly bundled rocky outcrops - it has to be seen to be believed. The stones are oddly shapes with many intricate formations in the shapes of pagodas, mushrooms, animals and even humans!

Continue on to Jianshui (approximately 3.5 hour drive) where you will be taken to your hotel. Spend the afternoon at your leisure.

Overnight in Jianshui: Lin An Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: Ancient China in Jianshui

Today is a day of sightseeing in the historic and cultural town of Jianshui where you can delve into ancient China. Begin with the Chaoyang Gateway Arch. The town was surrounded with a city wall and this was the Eastern Gate through which you could enter the city. Next visit Temple of Confucius, the Garden of the Family Zhu, take a walk on the Twin Dragon Bridge and discover the ancient wonders of Jianshui.

Overnight in Jianshui: Lin An Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Ancient villages and the Rice Terraces of Yuanyang

This morning you will be driven to Tuanshan Village, also known as Zhang Family Garden. It is a surviving example of a traditional walled Yunnan village where the homes, gateways, walls and temples have been well preserved. Wander the ancient laneways and see the traditional craftsmen at work.

From here you will be driven by your guide and driver to Yuanyang, a 3 hour drive. In the afternoon you will visit Hani ethnic minority village. With beautiful mountain scenery a narrow gravel road leads you to a charming village - Qingkou Hani Ethnic Village. The Hanis are engaged in agriculture and build their two and three storey houses of bamboo, mud, stone and wood on hill slopes. Their religion is fascinating and they are polytheists (they worship multiple Gods and deities). Rituals are regularly held to worship the Gods of Heaven, Earth, the Dragon Tree and their village, as well as their family patron gods. According to the Hani people's custom, a son's name begins with the last one or two words of his father's name in order to keep the family line going. The villages lies between the forest edge and the mountainside terraces and traditional life is on display.

Then visit the Bada terrace. From here the view of the terraced rice paddies on Bada Mountain is spectacular. This is the best place to get the sunset scenery of the rice terraces of Yuanyang. The terraces climb the mountain side as the sun sets, the colours change making it a very special experience and one where you will want your camera.

Overnight in Yuanyang: Yun Ti Hotel - Standard Double Room (3 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 5: Explore Yuanyang and its spectacular views

This morning visit the Duoyishu Terraces, the best place to see the sunrise from the terraces (weather dependent of course). The terraces were hand built by the Hani people 2,500 years ago when they arrived to this region from the Tibetan plateaus. To avoid the top soil being washed down the mountain, the terrace wall were built, and the result was not only a viable ecosystem but a beautifully transformed mountain side.

Visit a Yi ethnic minority village and witness their ancient customs.

Later in the day visit the last of the best spots to view the terraces, Laohuzhui terrace and enjoy the beautiful sunset there.

Overnight in Yuanyang: Yun Ti Hotel - Standard Double Room (3 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 6: Travel back to Kunming

Travelbay China - 7 Day Yuanyang tour

How to get there:
This tour starts and ends in Kunming, China.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping and so we provide the following information for you as a guide only.

Many tour guides and drivers in China rely on tips as part of their wages. In saying this, tipping always comes down to the service you have received and is a personal matter.

The following amounts can be used as a rule of thumb and are per person as you feel:

  • For a local tour guide in a small group of 2-4 people: USD8-12 per day
  • For a driver in a small group of 2-4 people: USD4-6 per day
  • For hotel bellboys: USD2-3 dollars per day

If your group is larger, the amount each person tips the guide or driver may decrease.

Generally you will have the same guide for the duration of your stay in each city/location and you can then give an accumulated tip at the end of your time in that city. For example, for 3 nights and 2 days in Beijing for a group of 2 people, at the end of your time in Beijing you might tip the guide USD50.

The driver does not always remain the same for each location and so you may prefer to tip them daily or check with your guide as to whether you will have the same driver the next day.

If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

We do realise that tipping is quite high for China and adds to the cost of your holiday. Generally speaking for a 10 Day Holiday you could budget to spend around USD150 on tipping.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Currency information:
The currency used in China is the Renminbi.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

The region of Yuanyang has a subtropical monsoon climate and has quite mild weather year round. It has been called "Spring City" because of this. The average annual temperature is 24°C. The nights however will be cool in Spring and Winter (December to May)

Peak season:
China is a popular destination all year round – each time of the year has something to offer. The summers are hot, spring and autumn temperate and the winters can be fresh and cold with snow in some places. May and April in the spring are popular times to visit as are October and November (except for the first week of October – see below).

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when travel in China can be a little difficult. Most people go home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but it normally falls in late January to February. Please note – we do not recommend travelling at this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

  • May 1 – 3: May 1 is a public holiday in China celebrating International Labour Day. High season surcharges may apply at this time.
  • July & August: This is the summer holiday period in China when Chinese domestic tourism is at its peak. Hotels fill up fast and major attractions can be crowded. If you would like to travel at this time please give us as much advance warning as possible so that we can make all the necessary arrangements for you. A high season surcharge may also apply.
  • October 1 – 7: National Day is on October 1 and from October 1 – 7 it is a national holiday. Many Chinese people travel at this time and tourist attractions and hotels are very busy. We do not recommend travelling at this time.

Population of Yuanyang: 0.42 million with 0.23 million Hani People

Language: Mandarin & Hani language

Some interesting facts:
The Yuanyang rice fields that were carved 2,500 years ago by the ancestors of the Hani and Yi People have been called the most beautiful curvy lines of the world - you only have to look at the pictures, or better yet take a visit, to see why.

The rice terraces were built from hand with minimal equipment, cover 111.3 square kilometres and climb several thousand metres high.

The terraces form a self sustaining ecosystem - in the winter and early spring the fields are irrigated with spring water from the forest above. There is only one harvest a year and at different times of the years, the landscape changes dramatically. It has long been a photographers haven.
