ITINERARY

Luang Prabang - Vientiane - Phnom Penh - Siem Reap: 12 days

The combination of Laos and Cambodia makes for a very special holiday.

In laid-back Laos the pace of life is a notch down from other Asian countries, the people are lovely, the landscape is spectacular, the food is delicious and travelling here is simply a joy.

Cambodia is a country of contrasts - from the mighty Khmer Empire that built the temple of Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world, to the more recent history of the Khmer Rouge and the brutal war that ravaged the country in the late 1970's. Add to this a touch of the colonial French, a nation of people with big hearts and big smiles and so much more...

* Price includes 11 nights' accommodation, flight from Vientiane to Phnom Penh, transfers, guides, 13 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights from your country of origin.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Laos/Cambodia are approximately $900 - $1200 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang - Laos

On arrival, you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to the hotel.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Laos Wooden House - Superior Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Resort - Superior Room (4 Star); Luang Prabang View Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves and the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall

After being collected from your hotel, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. En route, typical Laotian villages are barely visible behind thick foliage. Wooden canoes bobbing by the shore attached to bamboo poles can be seen everywhere while floats mark the location of nets and fish traps. Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves. Both repositories house thousands of Buddha images, which range from mere centimetres to two meters in height. Return to Luang Prabang by car.

After the caves visit village of Ban Xanghai followed by lunch at a local restaurant on the banks of the Mekong River.

Return to Luang Prabang and hop from boat to car to visit Ban Xangkhong a village that is famed for its wood-paper making and naturally dyed silk weavings.

Then drive South to one of Luang Prabang’s most picturesque sights, the Kuang Si Waterfall. The turquoise cascades and pristine fresh water are a highlight for many travellers. You can swim, relax and enjoy the pools. Return to Luang Prabang in the later afternoon. In the evening you may wish to explore the colourful night Bazaar.

Day 3: Take a city tour of Luang Prabang

Today you have the option to get up before dawn to participate in offering alms to hundreds of saffron-robed monks – an awe-inspiring sight dating back generations in Laos. Then there is the option to walk through the morning market where all local products are sold. Watch the town come to life in the morning then return to your hotel for breakfast.

Please Note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered so out of respect please have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

After breakfast it will be time to set out for a city sightseeing tour that includes the most important Luang Prabang sites. Visit Wat Visoun, known as the ‘Watermelon Stupa’ due to the unusual spherical shape of its stupa, followed by the stunning Wat Xiengthong. This utterly unique temple features a Red Chapel with elaborate carvings depicting scenes from daily 16th century life - a temple which epitomises all the elegance and grace of Luang Prabang architecture.

Next on the agenda is a visit to The Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, an exhibition space and fair trade store dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation, and presentation of the traditional art and lifestyles of Laos. Then continue on to the Royal Palace (closed on Tuesdays), which is now a National Museum and houses the precious exhibits that used to be possessions of the former Laos Royal family.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Laos Wooden House - Superior Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Resort - Superior Room (4 Star); Luang Prabang View Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)

There are plenty of stops where you can get off and stretch your legs as well as try some local Laotian snacks.

Day 7: Explore Phnom Penh with a city tour

After breakfast in the hotel begin your city tour of Phnom Penh by visiting the Silver Pagoda (or the temple of the Emerald Buddha). Originally built by King Norodom in 1892 to enshrine royal ashes and then rebuilt by King Sihanouk in 1962, the Pagoda’s steps are of Italian marble and inside, its floor is comprised of more than 5000 silver tiles, which together weigh nearly 6 tons. In the centre of the pagoda is a magnificent emerald Buddha statue made of Baccarat crystal. In front is a 90 kg golden Buddha studded with 9584 diamonds, dating from 1906. It was made from the jewellery of King Norodom.

Next to the Silver Pagoda is the Royal Palace that was mainly built by the French in 1866 on the site of the old town. The main building on the compound is the Throne Room. It was built in 1917 in Khmer style; it has a tiered roof and a 59-meter tower, influenced by Angkor’s Bayon Temple. It was used for coronations and other official occasions such as the reception of foreign ambassadors when they presented their official credentials.

At the end of the tour visit Wat Phnom located on a man-made hill, 27 meters high, in the middle of Phnom Penh. The pagoda was built for the first time in 1372 to house four Buddha statues said to have been deposited by the waters of the Mekong River.

Although far from pretty, learning more about Cambodia’s recent history is essential and helps to bring understanding to  the people of Cambodia and the country's development. When on 17 April 1975 Phnom Penh fell, the Khmer Rouge evacuated the city with force and left the capital as a ghost city. Pol Pot turned the former High School of Chao Ponhea Yat into the S‐21 (Tuol Sleng) prison camp where “enemies of the regime” were tortured and later killed. All of its prisoners were registered and photographed and nowadays these pictures deck the narrow halls of the Genocide Museum of Tuol Sleng. It is believed that over 17,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, all of them but seven known survivors, eventually found their death. Prisoners who did survive the torture of Tuol Sleng were brought to Choeung Ek, which is known as “The Killing Fields”. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line. Nowadays it is home to a memorial stupa containing over 5000 skulls, which allows the Khmer people to return and honour their ancestors who died by the Pol Pot regime.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: Kolabsor Hotel - Comfort Room (3 Star); Green Palace Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Intercontinental Phnom Penh - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 8: Travel to Siem Reap

After breakfast you will be collected and taken to the bus station for your bus trip to Siem Reap (approx 8 hours by bus). This is a fascinating bus ride and you can watch Cambodian life pass you by. On arrival in Siem Reap you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Option to upgrade: If you would prefer to fly from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap we can arrange this at an additional cost of USD125 per person. This will be invoiced to you separately.

Overnight in Siem Reap: City River Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Sokharoth - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Navutu Dream Resort - Explorer Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9: Visit an authentic floating village in Siem Reap

Spend the morning at leisure.

In the afternoon, visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats. The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

By visiting a local home you get a better understanding of life on the lake and your guide would be more than happy to translate your questions to your hosts. Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

This tour may sometimes be changed to the morning due to the water level (high or low) - your guide will re-confirm the time for the tour.

Overnight in Siem Reap: City River Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Sokharoth - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Navutu Dream Resort - Explorer Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10: Discover the marvels of Angkor Wat

Spend the day discovering the magnificence of the temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park

After breakfast, visit the former capital of the Angkor Kingdom, Angkor Thom, which translates to “Great City”. The city covers an area of 9km² in which numerous monuments were built. The South Gate offers the grandest access to the city whilst the Victory Gate grants access on the East side. The centrepiece of the city is the Bayon with its distinctive 216 serene stone faces.

The Baphuon and Phimeanakas are structures built in the 11th and 10th century respectively and both were built in the pyramid style. Visit the grand Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of Leper King - the curious name of this terrace refers to a statue of the Leper King that is on the platform of the terrace. The remainder of the morning is dedicated to Ta Prohm, which is considered to be the most photographed temple within the Angkor complex and has been pretty much untouched by archaeologists. The trees that grow out of the ruins allow for a mysterious feeling filled with photogenic opportunities.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant in the Angkor area.

After lunch visit the iconic Angkor Wat, which dates back to the first half of the 12th century. King Suryavarman II constructed this magnificent masterpiece and built it to become the largest religious monument in the world. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, reliefs and sculptures make it one of the finest temples in the world. This temple is an expression of Khmer art at its highest point of development. It took in its entirety roughly 30 years to construct Angkor Wat.

Travelybay Tours - 12 Day Laos and Cambodia

How to get there:
This tour starts in Luang Prabang, Laos and ends in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Tourists to Laos and Cambodia require a visa for each. These can be obtained on arrival and you will need a completed application form, a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee of around US$35 per visa.

Currency information:
The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip and in Cambodia the Cambodian Riel.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available in both countries and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Climate:
The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons. And whilst it does rain in the wet season, there is no need to be put off travelling at this time. The temples of Angkor Wat are at their most picturesque during the wet season and the forest comes to life.

Dry Season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October
Peak season: November to December

Population: 6.9 million

Language: Lao (closely related to Thai) and Khmer (Cambodia)

Predominant religion: Buddhism

Some interesting facts:
Laos was once called Lan Xang which translates to "kingdom of a million elephants".

Laos has been conquered by the Thai, the French and the Japanese. It gained its independence in 1949 from the French.

Laos has been labelled the most bombed country in the world. It is estimated that during the Vietnam war, more than all the bombs dropped on Europe during World War II were dropped in Laos.

Luang Prabang has a curfew of 11.30pm. All businesses are required to be closed by this time except for the bowling alley.

It's hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.
