Laos & Cambodia - 12 Days of Marvels, Magnificence and More...Private Tour - is currently on backorder. You may still purchase now though and we'll ship as soon as more become available.

Luang Prabang - Vientiane - Phnom Penh - Siem Reap: 12 days

The combination of Laos and Cambodia makes for a very special holiday.

In laid-back Laos the pace of life is a notch down from other Asian countries, the people are lovely, the landscape is spectacular, the food is delicious and travelling here is simply a joy.

Cambodia is a fascinating country to visit - from the mighty Khmer Empire that built the temple of Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world, to the more recent history of the Khmer Rouge and the brutal war that ravaged the country in the late 1970's. Add to this a nation of people with big hearts and big smiles and so much more...

This is a Private Tour meaning you will have the service of your own personal guide, driver and private car. Travelbay can cater for any size group but it will only be YOUR group and we will provide a suitably sized vehicle. You can select any date (subject to availability, with very few exclusions and please give us at least 30 days notice). We think these tours are very special and hope you will too!

Travelbay Tips: Arrive early or stay an extra night - most people love Laos. Another option is to pair this tour up with one of our Vietnam or Myanmar tour packages.

* Price includes 11 nights' accommodation, 2 internal flights, your own private guides and drivers, all transfers, 13 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights from your country of origin.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Laos/Cambodia are approximately $900 - $1200 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang - Laos

On arrival, you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your hotel in the gorgeous town of Luang Prabang. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage town, Luang Prabang is a special place to visit and has much to offer from gilded wats (temples) to outstanding natural beauty, delicious cuisine and more.

The night markets in Luang Prabang are exceptional and we recommend a visit, they are within walking distance from your hotel (3, 4 and 5 star options) and you can visit them at your leisure.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara - Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Sightseeing and visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves

After breakfast, start with a sightseeing tour of Luang Prabang including the markets and former King's Palace. Luang Prabang is possibly the best-preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. The tranquility and charm of this town combined with the incredible natural scenery and cultural sights make it one of the most delightful places to visit in Laos.

After seeing the town, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou CavesAlong the way, you will get a glimpse of typical Laotian villages. Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves - both are home to thousands of Buddha images, which range from mere centimetres to two meters in height.

After the caves visit Ban Xang Hai, a popular village for sampling traditional rice whisky which is produced here. Then return to Luang Prabang by boat.

Later today and in time for sunset, climb up to the top of Mount Phousi - home to a gilded stupa and incredible sunset views of the city and Mekong River.

Please note: There are around 329 steps to reach the top.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Local markets and the Kuang Si Waterfall

This morning you may choose to wake up early and participate in the daily early morning ritual of saffron-clad monks with their black alms-giving bowls receiving offerings from the local people, including the ubiquitous sticky rice.

Please Note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered so out of respect please have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

From here you can visit the Phosi Market where you will see diverse offerings such as dried buffalo skin and local tea among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit the Ban Ouay, Hmong Hill tribe and others in the Khmu village.

Continue on to Kuang Si Waterfall - a beautiful waterfall made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise coloured pools - a highlight for many when visiting Luang Prabang. Here you can enjoy the cooling freshness and leafy green shade of the area and bathe in some of the pools at the lower level of the waterfall.

If you would like to arrange more walking and trekking of the surrounding area please let us know. You can walk from the Hmong Village to the waterfall through rice fields and forests under the shade of rosewood trees followed by a picnic lunch and swim at the waterfalls.

On the return to Luang Prabang visit Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xienglek, well known for its hand-made Jute Sar paper.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Chitdara Standard Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Satri House - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

  • Haw Phra Keo: one of the most interesting and impressive temples in Vientiane, built in 1565.
  • Wat Sisaket: famous for its cloister wall storing thousands of tiny Buddha images.
  • Pha That Luang: Laos' most important monument - a gold covered stupa.

Day 7: Explore Phnom Penh and visit the Killing Fields

Begin your tour this morning with a visit to the Royal Palace overlooking the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the palace is now home to the reigning monarch. Within the palace grounds you will find the coronation hall, an open air theatre for the Royal Dance Troupe, and the King’s private residence. The grounds are open to the public except when the King is in residence. The grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, its floor covered by 5,000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilogram.

Next, visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which documents the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against both their political enemies and many thousands of everyday Cambodians. In 1975 this former high school was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture centre in the country. Please note that the images on display are quite graphic and unsettling.

Then drive to Choeung Ek - The Killing Fields, where the brutal executions of more than 17,000 men, women and children took place. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line. The large mass grave pits have all but gone, however the stupa filled with skulls is a stark reminder of the recent history.

In the late afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel.

Overnight in Phnom Penh: King Grand Boutique - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Villa Langka Boutique - Superior Room (4 Star); Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel & Residence - Deluxe Room (5 Star).

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8: Travel to Siem Reap via Kompong Thom and Skuon aka "Spiderville"

After breakfast, you will be collected for the drive to Kompong Thom (around 4 hours).  Along the way, make a short stop to visit Skuon, sometimes known in the local language as "Spiderville." It is famous with international visitors for its fried spiders. The tarantulas are hunted and then deep fried with a history dating back to when food was scarce during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. Apparently they are quite tasty, and are said to be good for the heart and lungs but no obligation at all to try one – we didn’t!

Continue on to Kompong Thom and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch continue to Siem Reap and sit back and admire the scenery, watching local life as you pass by. Arrive at Siem Reap late in the afternoon.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Discover the temples of Angkor Wat

Today is a classic one-day tour of the temples of Angkor Wat. The day begins at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, the Bayon. The Bayon holds 54 towers decorated with more than 200 enigmatically smiling stone faces. The morning tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm, made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the famous Angkor Wat – best preserved of all the Angkor temples. Time is allowed for a thorough exploration of this huge architectural wonder before climbing to the top of ancient Pre Rup temple to watch the sunset over the jungle.

After the day's touring you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Visit a floating village in Siem Reap on the Tonle Sap Lake

Spend the morning at leisure and in the afternoon visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats. The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

By visiting a local home you get a better understanding of life on the lake and your guide would be more than happy to translate your questions to your hosts. Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

This tour may sometimes be changed to the morning due to the water level (high or low) - your guide will re-confirm the time for the tour when you are in Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Saem Siem Reap Hotel - Deluxe City View Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: Enjoy the day relaxing and exploring Siem Reap

Travelbay Laos and Cambodia Tours - 12 Days of Marvels & Magnificence Private Tour

How to get there:
This tour starts in Luang Prabang, Laos and ends in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Tourists to Laos and Cambodia require a visa for each. These can be obtained on arrival and you will need a completed application form, a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee of around US$37 per visa.

Currency information:
The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip and in Cambodia the Cambodian Riel.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available in both countries and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons. And whilst it does rain in the wet season, there is no need to be put off travelling at this time. The temples of Angkor Wat are at their most picturesque during the wet season and the forest comes to life.

Dry season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October

Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Laos & Cambodia.

The New Year (Pi Mai) is celebrated from April 13 – 16 and in some places the celebrations can last even longer. The whole country celebrates and there are many water activities on the street. Many people travel home to their families and travel at this time is not recommended.

Population: 6.9 million

Language: Lao (closely related to Thai) and Khmer (Cambodia)

Predominant religion: Buddhism

Some interesting facts:
Laos was once called Lan Xang which translates to "kingdom of a million elephants".

Laos has been conquered by the Thai, the French and the Japanese. It gained its independence in 1949 from the French.

Laos has been labelled the most bombed country in the world. It is estimated that during the Vietnam war, more than all the bombs dropped on Europe during World War II were dropped in Laos.

Luang Prabang has a curfew of 11.30pm. All businesses are required to be closed by this time except for the bowling alley.

It's hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.

What a fantastic holiday we have had. Cannot fault anything. A wonderful itinerary with the best of guides. We really feel we have experienced the best possible. The organising and pick ups were spot on all the time. Wonderful. All the hotels were excellent and situated near to sights when we had free time to wander on our own. Thank you to everyone at Travelbay.
