ITINERARY

Luang Prabang to Vientiane: 6 days

Laos is a gorgeous country nestled in the heart of South East Asia. Land locked and surrounded by Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China, it is a laid back country that has only been open to the world for a little over 20 years. The people are lovely and the pace of life in Laos is a notch down from other Asian countries.

The landscape is spectacular - jagged limestone cliffs, sunsets on the Mekong River, pristine forests... Life in the cities is just as scenic where monks wander the quiet streets in their orange robes. The food is delicious and travelling here is simply a joy.

Travelbay Tips: Arrive early or stay an extra night - as most people love Laos. Another option is to pair this tour up with one of our Vietnam, Cambodia or Myanmar packages.

* Price includes 5 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 6 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights to Laos.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Kochi are approximately $900 - $1300 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang

On arrival, you will be met at the airport, welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your hotel in the gorgeous town of Luang Prabang. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage town, Luang Prabang is a special place to visit and has much to offer from gilded wats (temples) to outstanding natural beauty, delicious cuisine and more.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Laos Wooden House - Superior Room (3 Star); Villa Santi Resort - Superior Room (4 Star); Luang Prabang View Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves and the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall

After being collected from your hotel, embark on a two hour cruise in a long-tail boat on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. En route, typical Laotian villages are barely visible from the river behind thick foliage. Wooden canoes bobbing by the shore attached to bamboo poles can be seen everywhere while floats mark the location of nets and fish traps. Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves. Both repositories house thousands of Buddha images, which range from mere centimetres to two meters in height.

After the caves visit Ban Xanghai, a popular village for sampling traditional rice whisky which is produced here, followed by lunch at a restaurant on the banks of the Mekong river. After returning to Luang Prabang, you’ll hop from boat to car to visit Ban Xangkhong, a village that’s famed for its wood-paper making and naturally-dyed silk weavings which make perfect presents to take back home.

After lunch, drive South to one of Luang Prabang’s most picturesque sights, the Kuang Si Waterfall. On arrival, take a leisurely hike through the national park towards the spectacular waterfall. The turquoise waters and cascading pools are quite a sight. For the more adventurous, continue to the top of the main waterfall where you may choose to swim in a large pool. Transfer back to your hotel by private vehicle. In the evening you may wish to explore the colourful night Bazaar.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Laos Wooden House - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Grand Luang Prabang - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Luang Prabang View Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: Take a city tour of Luang Prabang

Today you have the option to get up before dawn to participate in offering alms to hundreds of saffron-robed monks – an awe-inspiring sight dating back generations in Laos. Then there is the option to walk through the morning market where all local products are sold. Watch the town come to life in the morning then return to your hotel for breakfast.

Please Note: It is custom to ensure shoulders, chest and legs are covered so out of respect please have suitable clothing. If you choose to go, but prefer not to make an offering, that is fine but it is requested that you stand back and observe the ritual in silence.

After breakfast it will be time to set out for a city sightseeing tour that includes the most important Luang Prabang sites. Visit Wat Visoun, known as the ‘Watermelon Stupa’ due to the unusual spherical shape of its stupa, followed by the stunning Wat Xiengthong. This utterly unique temple features a Red Chapel with elaborate carvings depicting scenes from daily 16th century life - a temple which epitomises all the elegance and grace of Luang Prabang architecture.

Next on the agenda is a visit to The Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, an exhibition space and fair trade store dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation, and presentation of traditional art and lifestyles of Laos. Then continue on to the Royal Palace (closed on Tuesdays), which is now a National Museum and houses the precious exhibits that used to be possessions of the former Laos Royal family.

Overnight in Luang Prabang: Villa Laos Wooden House - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Grand Luang Prabang - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Luang Prabang View Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: Travel to Vientiane

Have breakfast and relax at your hotel until it is time for your transfer to the bus station for your journey to Vientiane (8 hours by bus). The scenery on this bus ride is spectacular. Sit from the comfort of your bus as you pass by limestone jagged cliffs and wind through countryside of Laos. There are plenty of stops where you can get off and stretch your legs as well as try some local Laotian snacks.

Option to upgrade: If you would prefer to fly from Luang Prabang to Vientiane we can arrange this at an additional cost of USD125 per person. This will be invoiced to you separately.

Overnight in Vientiane: Vansana Riverside Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Mercure Vientiane Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Lao Plaza - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Explore the quaint capital, Vientiane

After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel to begin exploring Vientiane. Embark on a sightseeing tour of the city’s major historic sites including religious museums of Wat Sisaket, the oldest temple that survived from the Siamese war of 1828 with its cloister containing more than 8,000 Buddha statues; Wat Ho Prakeo, containing a collection of Buddha statues, antiques and artefacts; That Luang Stupa, the single most important monument in Laos, which was built to cover the original small stupa, containing a piece of the chest bone of Buddha; Patouxay (Lao Arc de Triomphe), built quite recently in commemoration of those who died during the wars in the past and it is today the landmark of Vientiane.

Vientiane is a gorgeous city that is a delight to explore.

Visa information:
Tourists to Laos require a visa. This can be obtained on arrival and you will need a completed application form, a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee of US$35.

Currency information:
The currency used in Laos is the Lao Kip.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Climate:
The climate in Laos is classified as tropical monsoon. What that means is that the weather is tropical and the wet season generally sees a fair amount of rain.

Dry Season: November to February (cool dry) and March to April (hot dry)
Wet season: May to October
Peak season: November to December

Population: 6.9 million

Language: Lao (closely related to Thai)

Predominant religion: Buddhism

Some interesting facts:
Laos was once called Lan Xang which translates to "kingdom of a million elephants".

Laos has been conquered by the Thai, the French and the Japanese. It gained its independence in 1949 from the French.

Laos has been labelled the most bombed country in the world. It is estimated that during the Vietnam war, more than all the bombs dropped on Europe during World War II were dropped in Laos.

Luang Prabang has a curfew of 11.30pm. All businesses are required to be closed by this time except for the bowling alley.
