ITINERARY

Malacca to Penang and Kuala Lumpur: 10 days

Malacca, Penang and Kuala Lumpur - what an incredible tour of Malaysia.

Malacca, a vibrant old city where you can wander amongst the historical buildings and soak up a unique cultural mix is a great place to start your tour of colonial Malaysia. The centre of Malacca has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the beauty of the well preserved city is simply gorgeous.

If the word exotic had to be given a location, it would be Penang. With a rich and diverse culture, palm-fringed beaches, World Heritage listed Georgetown celebrating ancient and colonial times and much, much more - Penang really has it all.

Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's biggest city and what a grand city it is. The architecture ranges from modern skyscrapers to mosques, temples and shrines. This is symbolic of the culture too - a cosmopolitan metropolis with a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and the West. The bustling markets and street food are not to be missed either.

You can book this holiday online 24/7 or by ringing Travelbay on 1800 020 020 during office hours. To select your departure date when booking online please click on the “Click to select date” box which you will find under the “Select an available date:” heading on the above right. You can choose any date (subject to availability) for this holiday with the exception of any blockout date listed in the Terms. Travelbay Malaysia - 10 Day Colonial Malaysia Map

How to get there:
This tour starts and ends in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Australian passport holders do not require a visa for tourist travel in Malaysia. Please see here for more information or for other nationalities.

Currency information:
The currency used in Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Climate:
Malaysia lies close to the equator (Kuala Lumpur’s latitude is 3.139° N), and therefore it’s climate is classed as “equatorial”. This means it is hot and humid year round. Day time temperatures are frequently above 30°C and night time temperatures do not often drop below 20°C. In summary – it’s hot and muggy!

Wet season: May to October – there can be thunderstorms in the afternoon with brief downpours. Travelling at this time can still be excellent, however in September and October the downpours can be heavier and so if you are wanting to go diving or snorkelling this may not be the best time of year as visibility will be reduced

Peak season: There are 2 peak seasons in Malaysia – one from June to August and the other from December to January.

Population: 30 million

Language: Malaysian

Predominant religion: Islam (around 61%)

Some interesting facts:
Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Chinese tin miners and translates to “muddy confluence” – it is situated at the junction of the Gombak and Klang rivers.

The Petronas Towers were completed in 1998. One of the twin towers was built by a Japanese company (Hazama Corp) and the other by a Korean (Samsung).

Malacca has been ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British giving the city a medley of colonial influences.

Residents of Penang are known as Penagites and those of Kuala Lumpur as KLites.

Penang is where the famous shoe designer Jimmy Choo was born.
