Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the Mosque itself but are welcome to peer through the gates to view the impressive interior.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping and so we provide the following information for you as a guide only.

In Morocco, it is customary to tip waiters, porters in hotels and terminals, toilet attendants, taxi drivers, helpful museum curators, and even human parking meters (gardiens de voitures).

There is no rule as such, however we have included the below as a guide only (USD$)

  • Driver: $3 per person per day
  • Local guide: $2 per person per half day of sightseeing
  • Escorted guide: $6 or $7 per person per day
  • Porter: $1.00 per bag per person
  • Waiter staff: $1.50 per person (lunch or dinner)
  • Chamber maid: $1.00 per person per day

Currency information:
The currency used in Morocco is the Dirham (DH) which is divided into 100 centimes.

In practice, tourists rarely see anything smaller than a half-dirham coin and coins go up to 5 DH. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 DH.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and most shops.

Remember to always have your passport with you as identification when changing money.

What currency to take is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel insurance:
Please note: Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Morocco weather:
Morocco’s climate is diverse and varies from region to region. There is simply no bad time to visit Morocco as it and can be enjoyed all year round. If you prefer a milder climate the more favourable months to visit Morocco generally are between April to May (Spring) or September to November (Autumn) when the climate is not too hot or too cold.

It is typically a subtropical climate with long dry and hot summers, short, mild and wet winters. However, temperatures can fall as low as 5°C in the Sahara Desert and below zero in the Atlas Mountains. The further inland you go from the ocean, the more extreme the temperatures.

The coastal regions are pleasant all year around.

Western Coast ie: Casablanca
Summer: 18° – 26°C
Winter: 10° – 19°C

North – Inland ie: Fez
Summer: 19° – 35°C
Winter: 5° – 18°C

South – Inland ie: Marrakesh
Summer: 20° – 36°C
Winter: 7° – 23°C

Sahara Desert ie: Merzouga
Summer: 17° – 37°C
Winter: 7° – 20°C

Atlas Mountains Temperatures can drop below zero in winter and often be buried in snow.  Summer is generally sunny and warm, but cool at night.

Peak season:
Popular times to visit Morocco are April to June and September to November when the weather is warm and dry.

November to March is the high season with May to September being the low season.

Note: Ramadan will commence between the end of April and late May.

Population: 36.2 million and growing.

Language: Amazigh and Arabic are the two official languages. French is spoken all over the country and Spanish is spoken in northern regions. English is limited though widely spoken in all touristic spots.

Predominant religion: 99% of the population adhere to the Islamic faith.

Some interesting facts:

  • The Sahara Desert covers a large portion of Morocco and is the largest desert in the world. But the entire country isn’t desert. There are also mountain ranges, forests and fields.
  • Morocco is the largest processor and exporter of sardines in the world.
  • Traditionally the liver, not the heart, is considered to be the symbol of love in Morocco.
