Day 2: Explore Casablanca & Rabat – The Imperial City

After breakfast, begin your tour with a visit to the Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Morocco. This extravagant place of worship was built to commemorate the former King's 60th birthday. Not a cent was spared and it showcases the very best of Moroccan artisanship.

From here take a stroll along the Ain Diab Corniche, the fashionable coastal suburb of Casablanca with views along the Atlantic. Then head to Mohammed V Square also known as the heart of Casablanca. For lovers of architecture this area is sure to delight.

You will next be driven to Rabat (approximately 1 hour drive*), the country’s capital city, rich in history and beautiful architecture.

Explore the Kasbah of the Udayas (be sure to ask about entering via the dramatically enormous Almohad gate of Bab Oudaia). Stop next at the Mohammed V Mausoleum** where the present King’s father (the late Hassan II) and grandfather were laid to rest. Remember to look up and marvel at the hand-carved cedar ceilings covered in gold leaf.

Visit the Hassan Tower (just opposite the Mausoleum), an incomplete minaret standing at 44 metres tall with approximately 200 columns that would have originally been the foundation of what was to be the world’s tallest minaret and largest mosque.

Enjoy lunch before being driven to Tangier (approximately a 3 hour drive*) where you will spend the night.

**Ensure you are respectfully dressed when entering the Mausoleum. Shoulders and legs should be covered where possible.

Your driver will take you to Cape Spartel (appoximately 20 minute drive*) which is the northernmost point of Morocco and where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. This is where you can see the Cave of Hercules, Africa’s most north-westerly promontory and the famous window in the rock shaped like a map of Africa.

After lunch, continue to Chefchaouen (approximately a 2 hour drive*), also known as the Blue City and possibly one of the most majestic places to visit in Morocco.

Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the Mosque itself but are welcome to peer through the gates to view the impressive interior.

Built by the French in the 1930’s, Ifrane was an attempt to re-create a European alpine-style resort. Look out for the Barbary Macaque, an endangered species and the only African monkey living north of the Sahara.

On your way to Merzouga, stop over in Midelt where you have the option of having lunch at a local restaurant. Your journey will continue as you pass through many Amazigh (Berber) villages and the Ziz Valley before arriving at Erfoud. From here you will transfer to Merzouga - the heart of the Sahara Desert.

For a different and fun way to get to dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to saddle up for a sunset camel ride to your charming desert camp by the dunes – an experience not to be passed up!

Travelbay Morocco Tours - 14 Day Map

How to get there:
This tour starts and ends in Casablanca, Morocco.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If you have a valid Australian passport you do not need a visa to enter Morocco so long as your visit does not exceed 90 days.

Please note: Check with your airline in case you have connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Morocco. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa. Please refer to the visa requirements of the specific country.

Tipping and tour guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping and so we provide the following information for you as a guide only.

In Morocco, it is customary to tip waiters, porters in hotels and terminals, toilet attendants, taxi drivers, helpful museum curators, and even human parking meters (gardiens de voitures).

There is no rule as such, however we have included the below as a guide only (USD$)

  • Guide: $6 or $7 per person per day
  • Driver: $3 per person per day
  • Local guide (offers in-depth information at specific locations. There may be one or many guides along a tour program): $2 per person per half day of sightseeing
  • Porter: $1.00 per bag per person
  • Waiter staff: $1.50 per person (lunch or dinner)
  • Chamber maid: $1.00 per person per day

Currency information:
The currency used in Morocco is the Dirham (DH) which is divided into 100 centimes.

In practice, tourists rarely see anything smaller than a half-dirham coin and coins go up to 5 DH. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 DH.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and most shops.

Remember to always have your passport with you as identification when changing money.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Travel insurance:
Please note: Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance - we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Morocco’s climate is very diverse and varies between regions.

It is typically a subtropical climate however temperatures can fall as low as 5°C in the Sahara Desert and below zero in the Atlas Mountains. The further inland you go from the ocean, the more extreme the temperatures.

The winter in the north bordering the Mediterranean is wet and rainy, while in the south near the edge of the Moroccan Sahara, it is dry and can be bitterly cold at night.

Average summer temperatures in the coastal cities, range from 15 to 28°C. Temperatures can exceed 35°C the further inland you go.

Rain falls typically from November to March in coastal areas while the remainder of the country is mostly dry.

Western Coast ie: Casablanca
Winter: 10°- 19°C
Summer: 18° - 26°C

North – Inland ie: Fez
Summer: 19-35°C.

Atlas Mountains Temperatures can drop below zero in winter and often be buried in snow.  Summer is generally sunny and warm, but cool at night.
