Day 1: Arrival in Yangon

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! Upon arrival at the airport you will be warmly welcomed by your guide who will take you to your hotel for check in (note: check in time is 14.00. Early check in is subject to availability).

In the afternoon begin your sightseeing of Yangon with a visit to the 70-metre reclining Buddha at Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda. Then head to Chinatown for a change of scenery and check out the dragons and incense of the colourful Khen Hock Keong Chinese temple. Explore the vibrant street stalls where vendors sell all kinds of fruit, vegetable and other goods or simply walk around and soak in the atmosphere of this little China in Yangon.

Resume your sightseeing with a visit to the gleaming royal barge at Kandawgyi Park. Then, as the sun begins to set, travel to the resplendent Shwedagon Pagoda. Begin at the eastern entrance to find a row of shops at the base of the temple selling various religious items such as monks robes, alms bowls, offerings, incense and other Buddhist objects. Continue up the stairs to the main platform of Shwedagon where you will gaze in awe at the 100-metre gold-covered chedi (stupa).

Day 2: Fly to and explore the best of Bagan

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan (30 minute flight). Welcome to Bagan - known to be one of the greatest architectural sites in Asia. When Bagan was the centre of Myanmar from the 11th to 13th centuries the monarchs built multitudes of massive stupas and pagodas, scores of which are still present on the shores of the Irrawaddy River. The majesty of Bagan, with more than 4,000 red brick temples on a plain the size of Manhattan island is one of the highlights of a Myanmar holiday.

Upon arrival in Bagan, our guide and driver will pick you up at Nyaung U Airport and from here you will visit the bustling Nyaung U Market in Old Bagan. Following this explore the beauty and gold leaf Shwezigon Pagoda and learn about Burmese Buddhist traditions.

Visit Ananda Temple and stop along the way on the Bagan plains to admire some of the surrounding temples.

At the end of the day enjoy the panoramic sunset view from the second highest pagoda of Bagan, the Shwesandaw Pagoda.

This is available from October/November through March depending on weather conditions. The cost is USD329 per person and the tour departs around 5.30am. This is a highlight for many people who visit Myanmar. You can read more about the itinerary here.

In the morning you will be collected from your hotel to start the day's adventure. Visit some monuments and other famous temples in Bagan such as Dhammayangyi Temple, Htilominlo Temple.

Then visit the simple Minnanthu village located near central Bagan where you will have chance to meet the open and friendly village people who live in traditional houses. Their houses are built in the traditional way of the Myanmar countryside, with an outdoor living area for sitting, entertaining, working, and sleeping.

The life here is so peaceful and the men and women carry out their work and village life with ease. This surely will be a memorable image for your journey.

Day 4: Visit Kyauk Gu U Min and board your cruise ship

After breakfast your driver and guide will collect you and take you to the Bagan boat jetty. Board a private river boat and set off upriver toward Kyauk Gu U Min.

Throughout your Irrawaddy river cruise you will be treated to fabulous scenes of life on the water: fishermen, local ferry boats, riverside villages and views of the Bagan temples.

Stop at Sae Lan village and go ashore for a short walk. Sae Lan is typical of the riverside villages along the Irrawaddy. The friendly people work as farmers and fishermen, living a simple and happy life.

Continue by boat to Kyauk Gu U Min on the eastern side of the river where a short walk takes you to the temple. This beautiful temple has exquisite stone carvings depicting religious figures and flowers on the door.

After your exploration of Kyauk Gu U Min, you’ll return to the boat for a relaxing cruise back to Bagan (around 1 hour).

Return to your hotel in Bagan for a short rest before check out and transfer to the cruise jetty where you will begin your 4 night cruise journey. The cruise check in is at 5pm and the cruise jetty transfer is arranged by the cruise company.

Your cruise is with Pandaw Cruises and with them you will journey down the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan.

Pandaw Cruises are known for their beautiful ships finished in teak and brass built by traditional craftsmen. The ships are of the colonial-era character and with ultra-shallow drafts they can travel to remote area of the river that are not able to be reached any other way. Passengers have described being on board Pandaw ships more like "being a guest on a private motor yacht than a on a cruise ship. This is a luxury experience and a beautiful way to see the gorgeous river settings.

Your ship will be either RV Orient Pandaw, RV Katha Pandaw, RV Kalaw Pandaw or RV Kha Byoo depending on availability. Please refer to the "MORE INFO" tab on this page for more details about these river cruise ships and the inclusions.

Day 7: Cruise to the Sagaing Hills, Ava & Amarapura

Arrive in Mandalay early this morning and enjoy an excursion to Ava, or Inwa as it is also known. This is like a trip back in time and the splendour of the past is evident in this ancient city. Then travel by coach to the ancient city of Amarapura and enjoy a walk on the scenic U Bein Bridge. Built in 1782, it spans 1.2 km across the shallow Taungthaman Lake and is said to be the longest teakwood bridge worldwide.

This evening visit to the picturesque Sagaing where pagodas and monasteries crowd the hills. Another of Myanmar's ancient capitals, the hills along the riverbank are home to hundreds of white, silver and gold pagodas.

Return to the cruise for your final night on board.

Overnight on your Pandaw Cruise: Main deck (3 Star); Upper Deck (4 and 5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8: Travel by boat to Mingun

This morning, disembark from your cruise in Mandalay at Sagaing Jetty.

Leave the buzz of the city behind and embark on a private boat for a relaxed 1 hour journey on the Irrawaddy River to Mingun. Experience the sights and sounds of Mingun, starting with the celebrated Mingun Paya, which would have been the world’s largest stupa if King Bodawpaya hadn’t died before it was finished. The construction of this enormous brick building was halted after a fortune-teller predicted the King’s death upon completion. An earthquake that hit in the 1800’s, split the monument and reduced it to partial rubble – it’s possibly the world’s largest pile of bricks. From the flat top you have a fine view of the Hsinbyume Paya, Mingun village and the river.

Carry on to the gorgeous alabaster Hsinbyume Pagoda, an unusual stupa with an interesting story behind it. It’s supposedly a representation of the Sulamani Paya which according to the Buddhist plan of the cosmos, stands atop Mount Meru (the mountain that stands at the centre of the universe). Afterwards hop on over to the Mingun Bell that weighs 90 tons and is claimed to be the world’s largest hung, uncracked bell still capable of ringing. Before returning to Mandalay by boat there’ll be enough time to explore the small neighborhoods throughout Mingun crafting traditional basketry where you can mingle with the friendly craftsmen and vendors.

Overnight in Mandalay: Hotel Yadanarbon Mandalay - Superior Room (3 star); Best Western Plus Eastern Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Mandalay Hill Resort - Superior Palace View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 9: Discover Manadalay

Start your day of sightseeing with a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda. This pagoda houses one of the country’s most honoured Buddha images, completely covered in gold leaves that are every day applied to the statue by male devotees. Proceed to Kuthodaw Pagoda, frequently dubbed as “The World’s Biggest Book” for its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings.

Then it’s off to the Shwenandaw Monastery, the Golden Monastery which is the only enduring structure from the Royal Palace of the 19th century. This impressive structure is celebrated for its remarkable woodcarvings.

Finally, visit Mandalay Palace - the last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy.

Spend the afternoon at leisure in the lovely city of Mandalay.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Myanmar has a monsoon climate with three main seasons - cool, hot and rainy.

Cool (and dry) season: The cooler months are from October to February. The average temperature is around 18 - 24°C. This is a popular time to travel in Myanmar and coincides with the peak season.

Hot, dry season: March to May. In March the temperatures start to climb, leading up to the next rainy season at the end of May. It’s hot in most of the country during this time and the rains come at the end of May. The average temperature is around 25 - 36° and can reach 40°C.

Rainy season: June to October. This is the monsoon season. From June to August the rain can be intense. This season brings frequent and heavy downpours of rain, mainly in the afternoon and evening especially in the Bay of Bengal coast, in Yangon and the Irrawaddy Delta, the rest of the country is drier. The weather is more humid at this time making travel less comfortable. The rains give way to dry weather in October and the temperatures begin to lower.

From the end of September and October the rains are less intense and you will most likely experience more sunshine. The temperatures are generally lower and more pleasant at this time. The average temperature is around 24 - 29°C.

Peak Season: November to February. March, April and October are also good times to travel in Myanmar. June to the end of September is considered low season. Travel is still possible, but this is not considered the best time in Myanmar.

  • It is advisable to bring comfortable lightweight, loose fitting, cotton clothing and long-sleeved items for protection from mosquitoes and the sun. A hat and high-factor sun block is advisable for protection against the hot sun when sightseeing.
  • T-shirts and knee length shorts are acceptable for visiting temples or pagodas. The dress code for pagodas and monasteries prescribe decent apparel, no footwear is allowed when visiting pagodas and monasteries. Shoes are generally removed at the entrance to pagodas.
  • Evenings in the hill stations and on Inle Lake can be quite chilly so bring a sweater or other warm clothing if visiting these areas. This applies especially for the winter months November-February for treks and the Inle Lake area where early morning boat rides can be quite cold.
  • Shoes (and socks!) must be removed before entering any religious building or private home. It is therefore useful to wear shoes without too many laces and which can easily be taken off.
  • Myanmar is a country deeply respectful of their religious and cultural traditions. Please kindly note a few things as below:
    • For men and women when you wear Myanmar dress, which is sold ready to wear, make sure you do not wear it carelessly such as unbuttoned or with your knee showing.
    • Wearing short skirts or shorts or showing too much skin can be considered insulting to the locals. When visiting pagodas and temples, pleas ensure your legs and arms are covered.

Population of Myanmar: 54.4 million
