Day 1: Arrival in Mandalay

Welcome to Mandalay! Mandalay is the second largest city of Myanmar and is one of the ancient royal capitals. It is often perceived and described in literature as Asia at its most traditional, timeless and alluring. Those who go are also met by a booming and vibrant city located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River.

Upon arrival at the Mandalay International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city which is about a one hour drive from the airport. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at your leisure.

Overnight in Mandalay: Hotel Yadanarbon Mandalay - Superior Room (3 star); Best Western Plus Eastern Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Shwe Pyi Thar - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: The sights of Mandalay

Begin your tour of Mandalay with a visit to the Mandalay Palace Kyauktawgyi Pagoda where you will find a giant Buddha carved from one marble block. Then proceed to Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as 'The World’s Biggest Book' for its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings. The final stop of the morning is Shwenandaw Monastery, the Golden Monastery which is the only enduring structure from the Royal Palace of the 19th century. This impressive structure is celebrated for its remarkable woodcarvings.

In the afternoon continue your guided tour with a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda. This pagoda houses one of the country’s most honoured Buddha images, completely covered in gold leaves that are applied every day to the statue by devotees. There are also many craft workshops in Mandalay and, should you wish and time permitting, it can be arranged for a visit to one of the workshops - making gold leaf, tapestries, wood carvings or marionettes.

Next drive to Amarapura, Myanmar's former royal capital. Visit Mahagandayon monastery, home to more than a thousand young monks and renowned as a centre for monastic study and strict religious discipline. Then continue on foot or by bus a short distance to U Bein Bridge. Built in 1782, it spans 1.2 km across the shallow Taungthaman Lake and is said to be the longest teakwood bridge worldwide. Enjoy the late afternoon beauty as the sun casts long shadows and illuminates the bridge. Return to Mandalay in the afternoon.

Overnight in Mandalay: Hotel Yadanarbon Mandalay - Superior Room (3 star); Best Western Plus Eastern Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Hotel Shwe Pyi Thar - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3: Fly to Bagan

In the early morning you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan (30 minute flight). Welcome to Bagan - known to be one of the greatest architectural sites in Asia. When Bagan was the centre of Myanmar from the 11th to 13th centuries the monarchs built multitudes of massive stupas and pagodas, scores of which are still present on the shores of the Irrawaddy River. The majesty of Bagan, with more than 4,000 red brick temples on a plain the size of Manhattan island is one of the highlights of a Myanmar holiday.

Discover the best of Bagan with an introduction to Burmese culture. See traditional craftsmen at work and travel up the mighty Irrawaddy River to a decidedly unusual ‘cave’ temple. Your first port of call is an elevated temple with panoramic views of the Bagan plains. This viewpoint will give you a taste of the sheer number of temples as well as some of their distinctive styles. From here, look around the Ananda Temple – one of the most exalted of Bagan’s temples. The tour will reach this point before the majority of tourist arrive, enabling you to enjoy the splendour of the temple in relative tranquility. Continue to various other temples dotted around the temple plains to experience a variety of architectural styles in the area as well as the artistic wonder of the 9-14th centuries. Traveling amid the temples you will get a taste of rural Bagan life in this ‘living museum’ setting where farmers and families work amongst the monuments.

In the afternoon head back to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure relaxing.

Overnight in Bagan: Sky Palace Hotel Bagan - Superior Room (3 star); Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary - Standard Building (4 Star); Amazing Bagan Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Temples & local life in Bagan

Optional tour: Start the morning with an exciting hot-air balloon ride above the Bagan countryside. You will observe one-of-a-kind views when the sun begins to rise over the Irrawaddy River and various stupas in the region. This is available from October/November through March depending on weather conditions. The cost is USD329 per person and the tour departs around 5.30am. This is a highlight for many people who visit Myanmar. You can read more about the itinerary here.

After breakfast visit the Nyaung Oo Market, where the locals come to trade fresh produce and other goods daily. From here explore Old Bagan starting with a visit to the renowned Shwezigon Pagoda, constructed by King Anawrahta in the early 11th century. Travel down dusty lanes and tree shaded roads past temples and monasteries to a small village. Explore the village on foot, getting a glimpse of local life. Continue to lesser-known monuments in the area for the remainder of the morning, selected based on your interest. If you wish, a short walk can be arranged through a series of smaller monuments which allows for a unique perspective of Bagan.

From here journey by horse cart for an excursion that passes Thatbyinnyu, the tallest temple in Bagan, the gigantic Dhammayangyi Temple noted for its remarkable brickwork, and of course, the well-known Sulamani Temple. Take pleasure in an extraordinary sunset from the upper terrace of one of the surrounding temples.

Overnight in Bagan: Sky Palace Hotel Bagan - Superior Room (3 star); Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary - Standard Building (4 Star); Amazing Bagan Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 5: Fly to Inle Lake

This morning transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Heho (40 minute flight). From Heho, it is a scenic one-hour drive to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway village to Inle Lake.

Here you will board a private motorboat and go to Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most spectacular sights. The calm waters are dotted with floating vegetation and fishing canoes, to which scenic hills provide the perfect backdrop. Observe the daily activities of the local leg-rowing fishermen and see their ‘floating gardens’, which are built up from strips of water hyacinth, earth and anchored to the bottom of the lake with bamboo poles.

Visit Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery, which houses many early Shan Buddha images. In the past this temple was known for its ‘jumping cats’ but these days there are only a few felines roaming around and none are jumping any more. Finally, proceed to the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, which contains five sacred images of Buddha decorated in gold leaf.

There are also many traditional crafts originating on Inle Lake and, should you wish it can be arranged for you to visit one of the workshops - woven items from lotus silk, boat builders (depending on the time of year), a cigar making workshop, blacksmiths or even silver smiths.

Overnight in Inle: Royal Inle Hotel (Nyaungshwe) - Superior Room (3 star); Inle Resort - Garden Cottage (4 Star); Pristine Lotus Spa Resort - Floating Duplex (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 6: A day enjoying the surrounds of Inle

Today begins with a visit to the lake’s morning market (the market is open every day apart from new moon and full moon calendar days). The market is a hive of activity as the lake's residents gather to buy fresh produce and other goods in the early morning hours.

Continue with a 1-hour boat ride down a small canal that will take you to the Pa-Oh village of Indein, positioned on the Western shores of Inle Lake. Take a leisurely stroll around the village before ascending the moss-covered stairway to the top of a hill. Once you’ve arrived at the summit, you will be greeted by an iconic Buddha image which sits enshrined among hundreds of stupa ruins and overgrown shrubbery. Then it’s time to embark on a gentle 45 minute trek to Sae Ma village. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the natural beauty and panoramic vistas of the area while basking under the shade of the bamboo grooves in the area. Upon arrival at the village, observe the daily lifestyles of the rural inhabitants.

Spend the afternoon at your leisure.

Overnight in Inle: Royal Inle Hotel (Nyaungshwe) - Superior Room (3 star); Inle Resort - Garden Cottage (4 Star); Pristine Lotus Spa Resort - Floating Duplex (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 7: Fly to Yangon

Breakfast will be served at your hotel before driving by a combination of boat and car to the Heho Airport (1-1.5 hour) for a short flight back to Yangon. Upon arrival at Yangon airport you’ll be greeted by your guide and driver then transferred to your hotel in Yangon.

In the afternoon begin your sightseeing of Yangon with a visit to the 70-metre reclining Buddha at Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda. Then head to Chinatown for a change of scenery and check out the dragons and incense of the colourful Khen Hock Keong Chinese temple. Explore the vibrant street stalls where vendors sell all kinds of fruit, vegetable and other goods or simply walk around and soak in the atmosphere of this little China in Yangon.

Resume your sightseeing with a visit to the gleaming royal barge at Kandawgyi Park. Then, as the sun begins to set, travel to the resplendent Shwedagon Pagoda. Begin at the eastern entrance to find a row of shops at the base of the temple selling various religious items such as monks robes, alms bowls, offerings, incense and other Buddhist objects. Continue up the stairs to the main platform of Shwedagon where you will gaze in awe at the 100-metre gold-covered chedi (stupa).

Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Myanmar.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population of Myanmar provides comprehensive information about what is required on their website.

Their home page is here: https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/index.aspx

Travellers from Australia with Australian passports can apply online for an eVisa.

This page: https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/NoticetoTourists.aspx provides details about applying for an electronic tourist visa, what you need and who is eligible.

A few things to be aware of:

  • The eVisa approval letter only lasts 90 days from the issued date. If you arrive and it has expired entry will be denied. However, it can take a few days to process, so you should also apply for it at least 3 weeks before you leave. We recommend you make a diary note and don’t leave it too late or do it too soon!
  • You will need to have a COLOURED passport type photo available to upload when you apply as per their specifications.
  • Best to have your passport handy when you complete the application to make sure you enter your name and details EXACTLY as they appear in your passport.
  • Also have available the name and address of where you will be staying. You are only allowed to stay in registered hotels and motels. Travelbay customers, you will find the name of your hotel listed under Day 1 of your Itinerary which is available both online and gets emailed to you.
  • Currently (2017) the visa fee is USD 50 payable when you book online by credit card. The amount changes sometimes but it tells you clearly at the time what is required.

For those of you that are not confident with computers perhaps ask a friend or relative to support you in completing the online application.

Finally, please take the time to read the instructions very carefully and follow all their requirements. They are very clear and simple and it all works well if you follow their instructions to the letter. It is all part of the fun of preparing for your wonderful holiday.

Currency information:
The currency used in Myanmar is the Kyat.

Only USD and Euro can be exchanged in Myanmar - not AUD.

There are many ATMs in Myanmar where you can withdraw a maximum of 500,000 Kyat at any one time (minimum of 50,000).

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be travelling to Myanmar to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Climate:
Myanmar has a monsoon climate with three main seasons - cool, hot and rainy.

Cool (and dry) season: The cooler months are from October to February. The average temperature is around 18 - 24°C. This is a popular time to travel in Myanmar and coincides with the peak season.

Hot, dry season: March to May. In March the temperatures start to climb, leading up to the next rainy season at the end of May. It’s hot in most of the country during this time and the rains come at the end of May. The average temperature is around 25 - 36° and can reach 40°C.

Rainy season: June to October. This is the monsoon season. From June to August the rain can be intense. This season brings frequent and heavy downpours of rain, mainly in the afternoon and evening especially in the Bay of Bengal coast, in Yangon and the Irrawaddy Delta, the rest of the country is drier. The weather is more humid at this time making travel less comfortable. The rains give way to dry weather in October and the temperatures begin to lower.

From the end of September and October the rains are less intense and you will most likely experience more sunshine. The temperatures are generally lower and more pleasant at this time. The average temperature is around 24 - 29°C.

Peak Season: November to February. March, April and October are also good times to travel in Myanmar. June to the end of September is considered low season. Travel is still possible, but this is not considered the best time in Myanmar.

Clothing:

  • It is advisable to bring comfortable lightweight, loose fitting, cotton clothing and long-sleeved items for protection from mosquitoes and the sun. A hat and high-factor sun block is advisable for protection against the hot sun when sightseeing.
  • T-shirts and knee length shorts are acceptable for visiting temples or pagodas. The dress code for pagodas and monasteries prescribe decent apparel, no footwear is allowed when visiting pagodas and monasteries. Shoes are generally removed at the entrance to pagodas.
  • Evenings in the hill stations and on Inle Lake can be quite chilly so bring a sweater or other warm clothing if visiting these areas. This applies especially for the winter months November-February for treks and the Inle Lake area where early morning boat rides can be quite cold.
  • Shoes (and socks!) must be removed before entering any religious building or private home. It is therefore useful to wear shoes without too many laces and which can easily be taken off.
  • Myanmar is a country deeply respectful of their religious and cultural traditions. Please kindly note a few things as below:
    • For men and women when you wear Myanmar dress, which is sold ready to wear, make sure you do not wear it carelessly such as unbuttoned or with your knee showing.
    • Wearing short skirts or shorts or showing too much skin can be considered insulting to the locals. When visiting pagodas and temples, pleas ensure your legs and arms are covered.
