One of the most stunning sights to see in the Hoi An area is My Son, Vietnam’s most important site of the ancient kingdom of Champa. Between the 4th and 13th centuries, a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Vietnam.

This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence. Located in the heart of a beautiful valley and surrounded by high mountains ranges, My Son was named a Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999.

Originally built with wood, they were completely destroyed by fire in the 6th century and restored in the 7th century by Sambhuvarman, who rebuilt the temples with locally made bricks. Up to the 13th century, more than 70 similar temples were built, establishing My Son as a sanctuary of Hinduism in the Champa Kingdom. Free time in the afternoon

Day 17 ~ VIETNAM: Adventure through the Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of tunnels stretching over 250 km, have proven to be one of the most famous and historical aspects of the Vietnam War. The tunnel system was created in 1948 to assist the Viet Minh as they fought the French for independence. Digging and the building of tunnels continued over the next 25 years until it was an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centres. The tunnels could house thousands of people who lived almost entirely underground for years. There, people led relatively normal lives, which included getting married and raising children. During the American War, the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a free fire zone and was therefore, heavily attacked and bombed. In 1988, two sections of tunnels were opened up for visitors. Now you have the chance to enjoy this wonderful and informative experience. Created with “moving parts” these structures were designed to be liveable for long periods of time.

And for those who are interested, there is an opportunity for you to fire off rounds from a war era M16 or AK47 at the nearby firing range. (This activity is optional; fees for the firing range are not included).

TRAVELBAY SOUTH EAST ASIA 21 DAYS

How to get there:
The tour starts in Bangkok (Thailand) and ends in Siem Reap (Cambodia).

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:

Thailand
Many nationalities do not require a visa for Thailand.

Laos & Cambodia
Tourists to Laos and Cambodia require a visa for each. These can be obtained on arrival and you will need a completed application form, a recent passport sized photo and the visa processing fee of around US$35 per visa.

Vietnam
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is best to obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam embassy. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can find the Embassy instructions and more information here.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2017, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $95. A one month multiple entry visa $120 and a three month multiple entry visa $150 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at time it can take a few attempts to get through.

Please see here for more information or for other nationalities.

Currency information:
The currency used in Thailand is the Thai Baht, in Laos the Lao Kip, in Vietnam the Vietnamese Dong and in Cambodia the Cambodian Riel.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Climate:
The weather of South East Asia varies from region to region and this tour covers a substantial part of the continent! Generally speaking, the Southern parts of South East Asia are more humid and tropical and the Northern parts can be cool in the winter months (November to March) and in the mountainous areas. It is best to take layers of clothing to cover all eventualities from warm beaches, to cool mountain air and rain.

Dry season: November - February

  • When purchasing flights, cruises and other carriage and travel services, the name on the passport must match the name on the ticket otherwise you may not be able to travel and insurance may be invalid. If, after purchasing products or services but before traveling, any member of your party changes their name you must notify the relevant carrier, or us, immediately so that the necessary changes can be made to your documentation. You may incur a fee.
  • Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information. For those of you who have any medical conditions please also ensure you are fit to travel and have all the medication you need with you. Recommended inoculations for travel may change and you should consult your doctor for current recommendations before you depart. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all health entry requirements, obtain recommended inoculations, take all recommended medication, and follow all medical advice in relation to your trip.
  • Many but not all suppliers have facilities for people who require assistance. If you have any disabilities or require special assistance, please let us know at the time of booking so we can check if suitable services are available.
  • It is your responsibility to review travel prohibitions, warnings, announcements and advisories issued by the relevant government agencies prior to booking travel or departing to international destinations. For Australian travellers, information on conditions in various countries and the level of risk associated with travel to particular international destinations can be found on the Australian Government's travel advisory and consular assistance service website currently located at http://www.smarttraveller.gov.au. For travellers from other countries we recommend you check the travel recommendations of your country.
