Intro

Discover the wonders and delights of Southern Sri Lanka on this fantastic 11 Day tour. Walk in nature and enjoy the scenic mountain views, explore the hill country and tea plantations, take the country's most spectacular train ride, see elephants in the wild at one of the less-touristed National Parks, walk in the lush rainforest, go whale watching, enjoy seaside towns, gorgeous beaches and more.

This is a Private Tour with your own personal driver and private vehicle - a fantastic and leisurely way to see this gorgeous country.

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo

Your journey begins in Colombo. On arrival at the airport, your driver will be there to meet you and take you to your hotel for check in.

Overnight in Colombo: Ocean Edge Colombo 4 - Ocean Studio (Standard); Hotel Dwell Colombo or similar - Standard Room (Deluxe)

Day 2: Discover Kandy and find where they keep Buddha's tooth!

After breakfast at your hotel, your driver will collect you and take you up into the hills to the city of Kandy (around 4 hours).

Set on a plateau amongst the rainforest with mountain views from every angle, the city of Kandy is a lovely place to visit. In the afternoon, enjoy a city tour of Kandy including the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya. The gardens are home to collection of about 4000 plant species including Giant Bamboo, over 180 species of orchids and the large Ehetu tree which spreads its foliage out to a staggering 2000 square meters.

Travelbay Sri Lanka Tours - Temple of teh Tooth, Kandy

After visiting a gemstone museum and the Kandy Lake, visit the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - home to one of Buddha's teeth (you won't actually see the tooth as it is kept in a golden casket!). In the evening enjoy a cultural dance show.

*For certain departures in July and August, enjoy the Kandy Esala Perahera Festival. It is also known as the Festival of the Tooth and is one of the grandest Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka. It is an annual procession that pays homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha - a colourful and lively festival with traditional dances and costumes, fire-dancing, great food and much more. Travel during this time incurs a surcharge, please contact us for dates and pricing.

Discover why Sri Lankan tea is some of the world's finest and have a cup of pure Ceylon tea at the factory.

Nuwara Eliya can be translated to "City of Light" and is also known as Little England as colonial times can still be felt and the climate is somewhat cooler here. The mountain slopes are a spectacular sight covered in the bright green tea plantations, all adding to the unique character of Nuwara Eliya.

Enjoy your afternoon at leisure.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya: Heaven Seven or similar - Standard Room (Standard); Araliya Green City or similar - Superior Room (Deluxe)

If you would prefer not to do the hike we can arrange a visit to the Seetha Amman temple and for you to have high tea at the Grand, or you may simply prefer to relax and spend the day at your leisure.

Thank you for organising such a great tour. Our tour of Sri Lanka was amazing and everything went according to plan.

Our driver/guide Lionel navigated through the busy tuk tuk laden streets with ease in his air conditioned sedan. He passed on much of his vast knowledge of the rich history and culture of Sri Lanka and the Buddhist religion as we toured around.

Yes, with pleasure. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, please contact us for options.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Private Tour. It will be only you and your travel companions in the group and you will travel in a private vehicle with your own personal driver.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available. Please contact us for a quote.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel, if required.

For travel to Sri Lanka, you must obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) prior to arrival. This can be accessed online at the Sri Lanka ETA system. You can apply online and pay the ETA fee via credit card.

We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go. To find out the visa requirements for Sri Lanka, you can check here with Visalink.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Sri Lanka here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit. We recommend checking the visa requirements before you go.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

In Sri Lanka it is usual to tip the waiters, porters, guides and drivers. Tips are not included in the bills for hotels, transport companies or any other suppliers. At hotels and restaurants, about 10% of the bill is usually acceptable. Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. It is a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Although we give below a few general guidelines, it is to be remembered that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore please view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

Please note the below amounts are per person for individual travellers and are based on US Dollars.

Driver/Guide: USD 5 - 10 per day
Driver for Jeep Safari: USD 3 - 5 per ride
Bell boys: USD 0.50 per bag
Room service and restaurants: about 10% of the bill total (unless service charge is mentioned as included)

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Sri Lanka?

WIFI access is common in the cities at at your hotel. In smaller towns and rural villages, internet access may be less common.

You can also purchase a local SIM card for internet access.

Can I use my mobile phone in Sri Lanka?

Mobile reception is generally good in urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have very good network coverage.

Global roaming can be expensive in Sri Lanka and you may prefer to purchase a local SIM card.

What currency do they use in Sri Lanka and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. Remember to always have your passport with you as identification when changing money. Your driver will be able to assist you in changing money, either at the bank or with a local trader.

There are ATM machines available in the large cities. In smaller towns and villages there may be fewer (or none) available.

Well-known credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and in larger shops. Smaller shops, market stalls and in more rural places, there may not be credit card facilities.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Sri Lanka to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

When is the best time to travel to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a popular destination all year round - you can visit anytime!

For the West and South Coast, the weather is at it's best from December to March.

What clothing should I pack?

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate. Coastal temperatures are hot year round with minimal difference throughout the year. Up in the tea country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella and surrounds) it can be cool due to the altitude (think thermals and thick socks).

We recommend clothing for a tropical climate, layers for the cooler locations and a raincoat if you plan to visit in the rainy season.

It's always a good idea when travelling to have layers and comfortable shoes to cover all eventualities.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Sri Lanka?

Type D (Old British 3-pin) Type G (Irish/British 3-pin).

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Sri Lanka there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Sri Lanka?

Travelbay strongly recommends travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

When Nikki and Nicola applied for their ETA in March 2019, they found the process quite simple. Email confirmation was received less than an hour later with approval of the ETA (via email) received later the same day.

As at 2019, the ETA fee was USD 35.

For more information on the ETA system, see here.

Tipping

Currency

Travelbay Sri Lanka Tours - Sri Lankan currency

Shopping in Sri Lanka

Shopping in Sri Lanka can be great fun. The fish markets and veggie markets give a great insight into local life in Sri Lanka, although you may not find many souvenirs here!

For shopping you can bring home with you...

  • Ayurvedic products - from beauty products to first aid treatments to balms and healing creams, there is a wonderful selection available. The best place to buy these is often from a spice garden where the products are made on site.
  • Tea - the high quality of Sri Lankan tea is known worldwide. In the tea country you can see the women in the fields hand picking the tea.
  • Buddha and elephant figurines - a Buddhist nation that is home to many elephants, what better place to buy yourself a Buddha statue or elephant.
  • Gem stones - Sri Lanka is known for it's gemstones and in particular sapphires and moonstones.
