Cambodia - Stunning 6 Day Highlights Tour - is currently on backorder. You may still purchase now though and we'll ship as soon as more become available.

Angkor Wat to Phnom Penh: 6 days

Cambodia is a country of contrasts - from the mighty Khmer Empire that built the temple of Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world, to the more recent history of the Khmer Rouge and the brutal war that ravaged the country in the late 1970's. Add to this a touch of the colonial French, a nation of people with big hearts and big smiles and so much more...

Discover Angkor Wat, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and you will be left wanting to see more of Cambodia.

Tip: Pair this up with one of our Vietnam packages, Laos or Myanmar tours.

Note: Whilst many excursions are included in this tour, they are of course not compulsory should you at some point wish to take time off - please let your tour operator know and note that we are not able to provide any refunds.

* Price includes 1 domestic flight, 5 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 7 meals and more. Price does not include international flights to Cambodia.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Siem Reap are approximately $1000-$1200 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Day 1: Arrival in Siem Reap

Upon arriving in Siem Reap, a representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Overnight: City River Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Sokha Roth Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Navutu Dream Resort - Superior Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Visit an authentic floating village in Siem Reap

Spend the morning at leisure.

In the afternoon, visit one of Siem Reap’s authentic floating villages. Located on the North-Western tip of the Tonle Sap lake, the small village of Me Chrey is home to families who unlike other floating communities still live in wooden house boats. The village moves throughout the year, depending on the water levels of the lake. At the end of the dry season when the lake’s water levels are at its lowest, the villagers move closer to shore and live primarily from agricultural activities on land.

By visiting a local home you get a better understanding of life on the lake and your guide would be more than happy to translate your questions to your hosts. Return to the port and visit the Silk Farm of Artisans d’Angkor, located a 15 minute drive away. Here people with underprivileged backgrounds are given an opportunity to improve their livelihoods by reviving the ancient crafts of making art and producing silk. A local representative accompanies you and walks you through the farm and explains all the steps necessary to produce quality silk.

This tour may sometimes be changed to the morning due to the water level (high or low) - your guide will re-confirm the time for the tour.

Overnight: City River Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Sokha Roth Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Navutu Dream Resort - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3: Discover the marvels of Angkor Wat

Spend a full day to visiting the temples of Angkor Archeological Park.

Wake up early at 05:00 am to witness the beautiful Sunrise at Angkor Wat or Ta Prohm by a Tuk Tuk. Return to your hotel for breakfast and then continue the tour to visit: Southern Gate of Angkor Thom; Bayon, late 12th century; Baphuon, middle of 11th century; Phimeanakas, early 11th century; Northern & Southern Khleang, beginning 11th century; Terrace of the Elephants, end of 12th century; Terrace of Leper King, end of 12th century; Angkor Wat, first half of 12th century; Ta Prohm, early 13th century.

Overnight: City River Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Sokha Roth Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Navutu Dream Resort - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Fly to Phnom Penh

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Phnom Penh. Check in and relax, spend the afternoon at leisure discovering the capital city.

Overnight: Kolabsor Hotel - Comfort Room (3 Star); Green Palace Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Intercontinental - Superior Room (5 Star).

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Explore Phnom Penh and visit the Killing Fields

Spend the morning touring the sights of Phnom Penh including the Royal Palace that was built by the French in 1866 on the site of the old town. The main building on the compound is the Throne Room. It was built in 1917 in the traditional Khmer style and has a tiered roof and a 59-meter tower, which is influenced by Angkor Thom’s Bayon Temple.

On the compounds of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda stands out in its own distinctive way. The Pagoda’s steps are of Italian marble. On the inside the floor is comprised of more than 5000 silver tiles, which together weigh nearly 6 tons. The pagoda houses a magnificent 17th century Emerald Buddha statue and a 90kg gold Buddha studded with 9584 diamonds.

Right next to the palace, the National Museum of Phnom Penh was designed by French historian George Groslier also following traditional Khmer architecture. The museum itself is a landmark and masterpiece in the capital. It houses some of the most valuable Khmer Art and is home to a permanent display of Post Angkorian Buddha statues. Original statues from Angkor have a permanent home at the National Museum, while they have been replaced by replicas at Angkor itself.

Finally visit the Wat Phnom located on a man-made hill, 27m high. It is believed that Daun Penh, a wealthy widow, found four Buddha statues in a Koki tree floating in the river. She built a small pagoda in 1373 to house the statues after which in 1437 King Ponhea Yat ordered the construction of Wat Phnom, which eventually lead to the city’s namesake: Phnom Penh.

After lunch continue on to the Killing Fields. Although far from pretty, learning more about Cambodia’s recent history helps to increase one’s perception of Cambodia’s development and the people’s mentality. When on 17 April 1975 Phnom Penh fell, the Khmer Rouge evacuated the city with force and left the capital as a ghost city. Pol Pot turned the former High School of Chao Ponhea Yat into the S-21 (Tuol Sleng) prison camp where “enemies of the regime” were tortured and later killed. All of its prisoners were registered and photographed and nowadays these pictures deck the narrow halls of the Genocide Museum of Tuol Sleng. It is believed that over 17,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, all of them but seven known survivors eventually found their death. Prisoners who did survive the torture of Tuol Sleng were brought to Choeung Ek, which is known as “The Killing Fields”. This seemingly peaceful area located 17km from Phnom Penh was for everyone entering the site the end of the line. Nowadays it is home to a memorial stupa containing over 5000 skulls, which allows the Khmer people to return and honour their ancestors who died by the Pol Pot regime.

Overnight: Kolabsor Hotel - Comfort Room (3 Star); Green Palace Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Intercontinental - Superior Room (5 Star).

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Travelbay Cambodia - 6 Day tour

How to get there:
This tour starts in Siem Reap and ends in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia.

A visa can be obtained on arrival in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. You will need the following information:

  • A completed visa application form (you can obtain the application form on your arrival)
  • Your current passport with at least 6 months validity
  • One recent passport sized photograph
  • Appropriate visa fee. Last time we checked in 2017 this was USD35. It is best to have this in cash (US Dollars) for when you arrive.

Please see here for more information.

Currency information:
The currency used in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel. The USD is also widely accepted.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines available and you should let your bank know that you will be using your card over there to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons. Whilst it does rain in the wet season, there is no need to put off travelling at this time. The temples of Angkor Wat are at their most picturesque during the wet season and the forest comes to life.

Dry Season: November to May
Wet season: June to October
Peak season: November to January

Population: 15.15 million

Language: Khmer

Predominant religion: Buddhism (95%)

Some interesting facts:
It's hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.
