The Reunification Palace: This beautifully preserved palace was the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.

Notre Dame Cathedral was built in 1880 and the Old Post Office was built between 1886 – 1891. It is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture.

Thien Hau Pagoda in Cho Lon: This is a Chinese style temple located on Nguyen Trai Street in Cho Lon (China town) district. It is dedicated to Thien Hau, the Lady of the Sea, also known as “Mazu” (“Tian Hou” in Chinese).

Day 4: Enjoy Golf at the spectacular Sea Links Course in Mui Ne

Sea Links is the second course in Phan Thiet region, joining Ocean Dunes Golf Club as two jewels in this Vietnamese coastal town. The Sea Links Golf Club is built on an area of 160 hectares on a cliff with wild and beautiful sand dunes. The course designers, Ronald Fream and Golfplan Company highlight that the course retains much of the original terrain of white sand dunes.

Sea Links overlooks the ocean, with panoramic views of Mui Ne Bay, thus creating a particular appeal for golfers. The golfers at Sea Links can experience for themselves a modern but traditional links style golf course that exists nowhere else in Vietnam and or even in Asia.

Please note: Whilst this is a 36-hole golf course, the tour price includes 18 holes of golf. If you would like to play an extra 18 holes, you are more than welcome (cost of USD60).

After that, visit Ponagar Cham Tower. These towers were built by the Cham civilization between the 7th and 12th century to honour Yang Ino Po Nagar. The local Buddhists of Nha Trang use this place for prayers and worshipping and there are many incense sticks lit, giving the place an interesting architecture filled with stunning colours. The last point of the tour is the scenic stone grottoes of Hon Chong.

Marble Mountain is also home to Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village, which is a unique craft village to the South of the city. Situated at the foot of the Marble Mountains, this craft village has a proud history covering more than 200 years.

Leaving Marble Mountain, head North to visit the Son Tra Peninsula, 693m high above sea level and 10km from the centre of Da Nang City. Visit the Linh UngBai But pagoda which is considered one of the biggest pagodas in Da Nang in both scale and architecture. It beautifully combines both modern and traditional style. The most striking feature of this vast pagoda is its huge Lady Buddha statue, which is one of the tallest in Vietnam (67 meters) and spectacularly dominates the skyline. From here, the vista includes the whole city, mountain and Son Tra peninsula. In addition, from the distance, you will see Marble Mountain along with white sand-bank. The pagoda can be seen from every place in the city and looks like a mushroom of which the cap is Son Tra Mountain and the stalk is a beautiful sandy beach that affords an ideal area for bathing, swimming, playing sports and fishing.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is best to obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam embassy. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can find the Embassy instructions and more information here.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2017, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $99 and a one month multiple entry visa $140 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at time it can take a few attempts to get through.

Important Information in relation to Vietnam Visa Approval letters

We do not approve of or support 3rd party Vietnam Approval Letters for the following reason:

  • Vietnam Approval Letters are NOT Vietnam Visas.
  • There have been many reports of fake letters and fake companies providing letters. The Vietnam Embassy have issued warnings in this regard.
  • Even if you get a genuine letter on arrival in Vietnam you have to take your letter to a counter, queue up (sometimes for as long as an hour), pay a fee and get your Visa BEFORE you can pass through immigration – this can cause quite long delays at a time you would not want one.
  • We recommend that you obtain your Vietnam Visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnam Consulate in Sydney prior to departure – this is very quick and simple and can be done by post.
  • Should you urgently need a letter and for some reason cannot obtain a visa prior to departure such as due to short notice, our colleagues in Vietnam can obtain a legitimate approval letter for you, but you will of course still have to go through the queue process on arrival in Vietnam.

If you decide to go to a 3rd party to obtain a Vietnam Visa letter we cannot take any responsibility for the consequences should you not be able to gain entry to Vietnam or experience delays.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population is under 25.
