Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Ha Long Bay, Hanoi: 10 days

Vietnam is a fascinating and beautiful country with a rich history and culture. Together with the natural beauty, lovely people and delicious cuisine it makes for a wonderful holiday destination - in fact it is so great, many tourists choose to stay! Our 10 day tour of Vietnam takes you to the highlights of this friendly and exotic country.

Travelbay Tip: Should you wish to extend your holiday with extra nights at the start and/or end of your tour, we’d be happy to arrange extra accommodation for you at the same hotel as you will be staying at during the tour. You will need to pay for the extra night(s), but will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver and taken to the airport in time for your flight home at no extra cost. See here for more information about day tours.

This is a Small Group Tour with your own guide, driver and a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people. The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people. If you would like to make the tour a Private Tour, please contact us for a quote. We also offer Tailor Made Tours to Vietnam.

* Price includes 2 domestic flights, 9 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 15 meals and more. Price does not include return international flights from your country of origin.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Vietnam are approximately $900-$1100 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Next, head to the water and hop into a coracle - a traditional round boat where you can paddle on the canals of the Bay Mau Nipa Forest. This is a great fun!

Your guide will show you the folk game “bit mat dap nieu”. Then take a short break with local tea before your cooking class with the local chefs. The chefs will teach you how to cook Vietnamese foods and after you can enjoy your self-made lunch.

Day 7: Fly to Hanoi and enjoy an evening street foods tour

This morning you will be transferred to Da Nang airport for your 1 hour flight to Hanoi.

Spend the afternoon at leisure in Hanoi, known as the cultural capital of Vietnam. Set on the banks of the Red River, with many of the buildings being built during the French occupation, there is a distinct charm to Hanoi.

At around 4.00pm, you will be collected from your hotel and your guide will take you on a walking street food tour in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour.  It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 8: Depart Hanoi to Cruise the Emerald Waters of Ha Long Bay

The cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel and depart for Ha Long Bay for your tour through the scenic countryside.

Embark on a boat for an exploration of the wondrous Ha Long Bay (translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea”) and enjoy one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights.

This exciting cruise will provide a fantastic view of the picturesque scenery blending with the sky and some 3,000 limestone islands rising amazingly from the clear and emerald water. The limestone karsts formations are littered with beaches, grottoes and beautiful caves. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove and an enjoyable visit to one of the many hidden grottoes beneath towering cliffs.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. You will be leaving from and returning to the same hotel in Hanoi where you can safely store your remaining luggage.

Overnight in Ha Long Bay: Oriental Sails - Deluxe cabin or Lavender Cruise – Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Huong Hai Sealife - Suite (4 Star); Athena Luxury Cruise - Athena Executive Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: A leisurely morning in Ha Long Bay, travel back to Hanoi

After breakfast enjoy swimming, sunbathing and relax amongst the scenic wonders. After lunch return to Hanoi for a leisurely afternoon.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Time to go home or on to your next adventure

Today is a day free at leisure in Hanoi before your departure. You will be collected 3 hours prior to your flight and taken to the airport.

Meals included: Breakfast

MORE INFO

How to get there:
This tour starts in Ho Chi Minh City and ends in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

From our personal experience we found the best exchange rate was on taking AUD into a bank and exchanging for dong. Please keep in mind that banks are closed on weekends.

Bank fees are around $10 each time you withdraw cash at an ATM and the maximum you can withdraw at any one time is 3,000,000 dong (approximately $175 as at March 2018). It is likely you would need to withdraw a few times over your holiday depending on your needs.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Climate:
Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

          A tremendous time in Vietnam

Yes, we are back home now and would like to begin by saying that we had a tremendous time in Vietnam.

Everything was beyond our expectations. We were met and greeted most cordially at all the airports we landed in and sent on our way to the next punctually and without too much hassle. All the places we visited and hotels we stayed in were comfortable and clean. No complaints there. The buffet breakfast at Harmony Hotel was outstanding.

Of particular enjoyment to us was the Ha Long Bay overnight cruise which was superb and well organised including the sampan ride. All in all, it as a most enjoyable tour and not too strenuous for us seniors!

Thanks to everyone for your valuable advice right through. If we return to Vietnam it will be with Travelbay for sure!

          Stunning trip

Our trip to Vietnam was stunning from start to finish. There were 6 of us travelling together and we were the only guests on the tour. We were always met and taken everywhere on time by very friendly knowledgeable guides who spoke very good English. All the tours were interesting and fun and we saw a lot of Vietnam in a short time for an amazingly reasonable price. The accommodation was fabulous, the people always friendly and the food fantastic. All my dealings with Travelbay were professional, courteous and friendly and I would highly recommend them and the trip to anyone. We will definitely be going back. Thanks Fiona and the gang.
