Day 7: Fly to Hanoi and enjoy an evening street foods tour

This morning you will be transferred to Da Nang airport for your 1 hour flight to Hanoi.

Spend the afternoon at leisure in Hanoi, known as the cultural capital of Vietnam. Set on the banks of the Red River, with many of the buildings being built during the French occupation, there is a distinct charm to Hanoi.

At around 4.00pm, you will be collected from your hotel and your guide will take you on a walking street food tour in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour.  It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Apricot Hotel - Sketch Room (5 Star)

Day 8: A day in Hanoi and the overnight train to Sapa

Today is a day free at leisure in Hanoi. There are many great things to see and do in and around Hanoi. If you would like the option of a half day or full day tour, please see here for some examples.

In the evening you will be taken to the train station for the overnight train to Sapa. The train departs from Hanoi at 21:40 or 22:00. The train is the best way to get to Sapa as the road is known for its bumps. The train has full amenities such as air-conditioning and comfortable beds.

Please note: check out time is 6pm from the hotel. After this time you can leave your bags at the hotel and return for them before your transfer to the train station. If you wish to check out after 6pm please contact us and this will incur an extra fee.

Overnight train to Sapa: King Express - Shared cabin (3 Star); Chapa Express - Shared cabin (4 & 5 Star)

The cabins have 4 berths per cabin. If you would like to book the entire cabin, making it a private cabin, please let us know and we will get a quote for you to cover the cost of the extra berths.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9: Arrival in Lao Cai, picturesque landscapes and colourful hill tribes

Arrive early morning at Lao Cai station. You will be picked up by a local guide and taken on a scenic one-hour drive up to the hill station of Sapa.

From there you can take a short 30-minute journey South toward Muong Hoa Valley, a stunning place boasting the largest terraced rice fields in Sapa. If your visit is between May and October, the local harvest period, you will have a chance to see the local farmers in action. It is a nice chance to take in the scenery and a great photo opportunity. The walk takes you from Lao Chai Village of the Black H'mong Minority to the Ta Van Village of the Giay Minority with a stop at the local Catholic Church, taking in the different traditions, cultures and costumes of the two minority groups.

After that, you will return to Sapa and you can spend the rest of your afternoon at your leisure.

Please note: The planned walking for Days 9 and 10 in Sapa is for 3 hours each day and is considered easy trekking. We can adjust the length of the walk to make it either less or more depending on your preference. We can be quite flexible with this and you can plan in advance, or when you are in Sapa you can discuss this with your guide.

Overnight in Sapa: Sunny Mountain Hotel - Deluxe room (3 Star), Amazing Sapa Hotel - Superior room (4 Star), Victoria Sapa Resort - Superior room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 10: Explore the spectacular charm of Sapa

A one and a half hour downhill ride to Binh Lu includes a stop at Chu Va Village of the Flower H'mong tribe. Enjoy a packed lunch on the way. Trek to Pa Pen Village of the Lu Minority where you can talk with the locals and visit the local school (closed on weekends). Return to the hotel where you can freshen up before transferring to Lao Cai station to board the train back to Hanoi.

Day 12: Cruise the Emerald Waters of Ha Long Bay

The cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel and depart for Ha Long Bay for your tour through the scenic countryside.

Embark on a boat for an exploration of the wondrous Ha Long Bay (translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea”) and enjoy one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights.

This exciting cruise will provide a fantastic view of the picturesque scenery blending with the sky and some 3,000 limestone islands rising amazingly from the clear and emerald water. The limestone karsts formations are littered with beaches, grottoes and beautiful caves. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove and an enjoyable visit to one of the many hidden grottoes beneath towering cliffs.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. You will be leaving from and returning to the same hotel in Hanoi where you can safely store your remaining luggage.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

You can apply for your visa either online, by post or in person at the embassy or consulate.

To apply online, please click on the following link and you will need to upload your passport photo and passport: http://www.vietnamembassyvisa.org.au/

To apply by post and obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam Embassy you can click here for instructions and more information. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2018, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $99 and a one month multiple entry visa $140 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at times it can take a few attempts to get through.

Important Information in relation to Vietnam Visa Approval letters

We do not approve of or support 3rd party Vietnam Approval Letters for the following reason:

  • Vietnam Approval Letters are NOT Vietnam Visas.
  • There have been many reports of fake letters and fake companies providing letters. The Vietnam Embassy have issued warnings in this regard.
  • Even if you get a genuine letter on arrival in Vietnam you have to take your letter to a counter, queue up (sometimes for as long as an hour), pay a fee and get your Visa BEFORE you can pass through immigration – this can cause quite long delays at a time you would not want one.
  • We recommend that you obtain your Vietnam Visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnam Consulate in Sydney prior to departure – this is very quick and simple and can be done by post.
  • Should you urgently need a letter and for some reason cannot obtain a visa prior to departure such as due to short notice, our colleagues in Vietnam can obtain a legitimate approval letter for you, but you will of course still have to go through the queue process on arrival in Vietnam.

If you decide to go to a 3rd party to obtain a Vietnam Visa letter we cannot take any responsibility for the consequences should you not be able to gain entry to Vietnam or experience delays.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

From our personal experience we found the best exchange rate was on taking AUD into a bank and exchanging for dong. Please keep in mind that banks are closed on weekends.

Bank fees are around $10 each time you withdraw cash at an ATM and the maximum you can withdraw at any one time is 3,000,000 dong (approximately $175 as at March 2018). It is likely you would need to withdraw a few times over your holiday depending on your needs.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Climate:
Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

          Thank you

Congratulations on the swift smooth and smart way you put our tour together for us. It takes effort and time to do this so thank you.

Our trip was fantastic and organised so effectively and efficiently that we werent left wondering if the guide or driver would turn up. Will we make it on time to the airport? Will the guide be here on time? These questions need not be considered because times were kept. The few changes made we were emailed and informed about.

We particularly liked the mix of guided tours which covered all the expected places of interest and the free time. This gave us time to do the bits and pieces we enjoy and to relax. We thought the hotels were great choices because of their cleanliness, tidiness, bar fridges, water and friendly hotel staff. The staff were always helpful and it was nice to spend a few days in each one rather than lots of different places.

Thanks for putting our trip together and understanding what we enjoy and like to do.

          Huge Thank You

We just want to say a huge Thank you for your efforts in ensuring our holiday went smoothly. We really did have the most amazing time and could not fault anything. The additional tours we did - bicycle riding/vegetable gardens in Hoi An and the early morning bicycle ride in Hanoi were fantastic. All four guides were very pleasant and polite, and their input was really valuable. I will be using Travelbay again to book tours in different countries as I could not fault their communication nor level of professionalism and expertise. I am considering Sri Lanka and or India for a trip next year.

          We really loved Hoi An

We really loved the mountain rappelling in Hoi An that we arranged as an extra and felt it was run very well; safe with good instructions. Having all transport organised was really good and made our trip very stress free. The 4 star accommodation was fantastic as well as we didn't expect the rooms to be so nice, especially having the outdoor pool in Hoi An.

          Huge thanks

In the many years of travelling, I have never had the prompt attention to my enquiries, relaying of information and action that you have done for me. So, huge thanks again.
