Vietnam and Cambodia – Best of Both in 13 Days - is currently on backorder. You may still purchase now though and we'll ship as soon as more become available.

Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap, Cambodia: 13 days

Start your tour in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital in the North. Cruise the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay. Fly to Hoi An, one of our favourite towns for a wonderful few days. Fly to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) and enjoy the bustling streets and food stalls before flying to Siem Reap in Cambodia to be wowed by the grandeur of the temples of Angkor Wat.

Travelbay Tip: Day 1 of this tour is the day you arrive. Many people whose flights arrive in the evening, choose to arrive a day earlier to give themselves time to settle in and see a bit of Hanoi, as on the morning of Day 2 you will be collected after breakfast and taken to Ha Long Bay. Should you wish to arrive a day earlier, we’d be happy to arrange accommodation at the same hotel you will be staying at on your tour. You will need to pay for the extra night, but you will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver at no extra cost. There are many things to see and do in and around Hanoi. See here for more information about day tours.

* Price includes 2 domestic flights within Vietnam and 1 flight from Vietnam to Cambodia, 12 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 17 meals and more. Price does not include international flights from your place of origin to Vietnam or returning from Cambodia.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Ho Chi Minh City are approximately $900-$1100 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

We also offer many other tours to Vietnam and Cambodia as well as private and custom tours of Vietnam. Please contact us for more information.

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi you will be collected from the airport and transferred to your Hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Apricot Hotel - Sketch Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Cruise the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay

After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel by the cruise company for a drive through rice paddy fields to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay. Translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea” experience the magic and wonder of nature. Take a cruise on a junk boat among the hundreds of limestone peaks topped in rainforest rising from the emerald waters. After lunch visit a grotto of gigantic stalactites and stalagmites. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove. In the late evening you will drop anchor for an overnight stay on the Junk Cruise.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. You will be leaving from and returning to the same hotel in Hanoi where you can safely store your remaining luggage.

The shuttle bus from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay is operated by the cruise company.

Overnight Ha Long Bay Junk Cruise: V'Spirit - Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Glory Legend Cruise - Deluxe cabin (4 Star); Pelican Cruises - Deluxe cabin (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: A leisurely cruise in Ha Long Bay & Street Food tour in Hanoi

Early mornings are a wonderful time and are when Ha Long Bay is at its best. Enjoy the views from the deck of the cruise and spend the morning at your leisure – sit back and enjoy this unique landscape. After lunch return to Hanoi by shuttle bus.

Enjoy an evening walking Street Food Tour in Hanoi with your guide in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour. It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: L'Heritage Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star) Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Apricot Hotel - Sketch Room (5 Star)

How to get there:
This tour starts in Hanoi, Vietnam and ends in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

There are many domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi and Siem Reap as well as direct flights from Singapore and other international airports.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:

Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is best to obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam embassy. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can find the Embassy instructions and more information here.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2017, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $95. A one month multiple entry visa $120 and a three month multiple entry visa $150 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at time it can take a few attempts to get through.

Important Information in relation to Vietnam Visa Approval letters

We do not approve of or support 3rd party Vietnam Approval Letters for the following reason:

  • Vietnam Approval Letters are NOT Vietnam Visas.
  • There have been many reports of fake letters and fake companies providing letters. The Vietnam Embassy have issued warnings in this regard.
  • Even if you get a genuine letter on arrival in Vietnam you have to take your letter to a counter, queue up (sometimes for as long as an hour), pay a fee and get your Visa BEFORE you can pass through immigration – this can cause quite long delays at a time you would not want one.
  • We recommend that you obtain your Vietnam Visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnam Consulate in Sydney prior to departure – this is very quick and simple and can be done by post.
  • Should you urgently need a letter and for some reason cannot obtain a visa prior to departure such as due to short notice, our colleagues in Vietnam can obtain a legitimate approval letter for you, but you will of course still have to go through the queue process on arrival in Vietnam.

If you decide to go to a 3rd party to obtain a Vietnam Visa letter we cannot take any responsibility for the consequences should you not be able to gain entry to Vietnam or experience delays.

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Cambodia.

A visa can be obtained on arrival in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. You will need the following information:

  • A completed visa application form (you can obtain the application form on your arrival)
  • Your current passport with at least 6 months validity
  • One recent passport sized photograph
  • Appropriate visa fee. Last time we checked in 2017 this was USD35. It is best to have this in cash (US Dollars) for when you arrive.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong and in Cambodia the Cambodian Riel. In Cambodia, the USD is widely accepted.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons. Whilst it does rain in the wet season, there is no need to put off travelling at this time. The temples of Angkor Wat are at their most picturesque during the wet season and the forest comes to life.

    Dry Season: November to May
    Wet season: June to October
    Peak season: November to January

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

    Population: 15.15 million

    Language: Khmer

    Predominant religion: Buddhism (95%)

    Some interesting facts:
It is hard to look past the dark history of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970’s where the Khmer Rouge terrorised the nation. From 1975-1979 over 2 million people were killed, some estimates are closer to 3 million. As a result the country has had spent the last 30-40 years rebuilding itself.

Around half of the population is under 15.

It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century and is the largest religious monument in the world.
