Intro

Combining the highlights of Vietnam plus the magnificence of Angkor Wat – this is a very special 13 day holiday.

Begin in the vibrant city of Hanoi before cruising through the beautiful Ha Long Bay. Fly to Hoi An and discover the grace and history of this delightful ancient town. Explore the old town with its many restaurants, cafes and tailors and try your hand at a traditional cooking class. Continue on to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta and fly to Cambodia to be wowed by the grandeur of the temples of Angkor Wat.

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi you will be met at the airport by your guide and driver and taken to your hotel.

If you arrive early in the day or the day before and would like Travelbay to arrange a day, half day or evening tour (for a small additional fee) please let us know. You can find some sample tours here.

Overnight in Hanoi: Gondola Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 2: Overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay

This morning the cruise company shuttle bus will pick you up at your hotel for your transfer to Ha Long Bay.

Board your cruise boat for an exploration of the wondrous Ha Long Bay (translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea”) and enjoy one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Ha Long Bay

Enjoy the picturesque scenery and some 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald waters as you cruise through the bay. Amongst the limestone karst are beaches, grottoes and caves. Along the way, anchor for a swim in a secluded cove and visit one of the caves.

Drop anchor for the evening in the Bay and have dinner on board.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you for your stay on the cruise at Ha Long Bay as the boat cannot accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. When you check out of your hotel room in Hanoi take the rest of your luggage to reception where you will be able to store it safely until your return from Ha Long Bay.

Overnight in Ha Long Bay: Oriental Sails - Deluxe cabin or Lavender Cruise – Deluxe cabin (3 Star); Huong Hai Sealife - Suite (4 Star); Athena Luxury Cruise - Athena Executive Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

* Your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay is managed by the cruise company and will include more than 10 people.

Day 3: A leisurely morning in Ha Long Bay & a street food tour in Hanoi

Wake to the gorgeous sights in the bay. After breakfast, relax on board as you cruise back through the Bay to the pier. After brunch return to Hanoi by shuttle bus.

Enjoy an evening walking Street Food Tour in Hanoi with your guide in the Old Quarter.

Gain an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular Northern dishes. Eat as you go, walking through the maze of bustling streets, trying seasonal fruit and sampling tasty French-inspired snacks from a street cart. Try the famed Hanoi dishes such as Bun Cha Ta (a grilled pork and noodle dish) and Banh Cuon at a local eatery and watch as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together.

Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago - a hint at why it is called the "Old Quarter".

The next two snack stops are at outdoor BBQ stalls. Sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour. It’s now time for dessert!

Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets - Banh My Hanoi - a hidden street food restaurant where you can taste the top street foods in Hanoi including Vietnamese Rice Wine and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi.

Please note: If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs and wishes.

Overnight in Hanoi: Gondola Hotel - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Hanoi Pearl - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Melia Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, brunch and dinner

Day 4: A day of leisure and a flight to Hoi An

Enjoy your morning at leisure in Hanoi before being transferred to the airport for your flight to Da Nang. In Da Nang you will be met on arrival by your guide and driver and taken to your hotel in Hoi An.

Next, head to the water and hop into a coracle - a traditional round boat where you can paddle on the canals of the Bay Mau Nipa Forest. This is great fun!

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Cooking Class, Hoi An

Your guide will show you the folk game “bit mat dap nieu”. Then take a short break with local tea before your cooking class with the local chefs. The chefs will teach you how to cook Vietnamese food and after you can enjoy your self-made lunch.

The drive is around 2 hours and on arrival in Ben Tre you can explore coconut workshops and the art of mat weaving in local houses. You can relax in the village or wander around observing the locals go about their daily life.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Mekong Delta

When it is time for lunch, board a Xu Loi - a kind of motorised rickshaw and be taken to a riverside restaurant. After lunch you can either relax at the restaurant or take a bike ride around the lovely countryside. Day 10: Travel to Siem Reap - the gateway to Angkor Wat

Today you are free at leisure until you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. On arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 11: Full day tour of the majesty and magic of the Angkor temples

Today is a classic one-day tour of the Angkor temple complex.

Begin early with your guide and driver collecting you from your hotel at 7am (we recommend starting early to get ahead of some of the larger tour groups). Start with Angkor Wat itself - the iconic and best preserved of the Angkor temples. Accompanied by your guide, enter from the East, the back entrance, take your time at the temple and walk through to the front entrance where your driver will be waiting for you.

Travelbay Cambodia Tours - Angkor Thom South Gate

Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centrepiece of this ancient city, Bayon. The Bayon temple has 54 towers, all with a smiling Buddha face in each of the four directions.

The tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm - the jungle temple that has been overtaken by trees made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.

In the afternoon you will be taken back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Please note: When visiting the temples of Angkor you will need to ensure your shoulders are covered and wear trousers / skirts that cover your knees.

In the evening, you may wish to visit Pub Street where you can find many restaurants and bars, as well as the night markets. The hotel staff can help you with a tuk tuk to get you there.

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch

Day 12: More temples of Angkor

Today visit some temples that are a little further out and which involve a pleasant drive through the countryside. These temples are less busy than the main temples.

Your driver will collect you at 7am and take you to the small and beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, built for the worship of women. This temple is largely built of pink sandstone, a harder rock that can be more elaborately carved and better survives the rigours of time.

Continue on to Banteay Samre – its rose-colored sandstone walls are decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, which are among the most accomplished Angkor has to offer. Visit Pre Rup - a large temple-mountain, that contains well-preserved carvings of fine detail before being taken back to your hotel.

Enjoy the afternoon free at leisure. You might enjoy another visit to the markets or Pub Street as they are so much fun 😊

Overnight in Siem Reap: La Niche D'Angkor - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Tara Angkor Hotel - Superior Room (4 Star); Angkor Palace Resort - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 13: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

The tour ends today and you will be taken to the airport in time for your flight.

Meals included: Breakfast

On arrival you will be met by your guide and in each location you will have a different guide.

We like to leave a little bit of space in the itinerary for leisure and for people to do their own thing. However, if you would like to participate in more tours or excursions during your leisure time, you can find some examples of day tours here. Please note you will need to pay for any additional tours you choose to book that are not part of the existing itinerary. We can provide you with a quote.

Travelbay Tip: Day 1 of this tour is the day you arrive. Many people whose flights arrive in the evening, choose to arrive a day earlier to give themselves time to settle in and see a bit of Hanoi, as on the morning of Day 2 you will be collected after breakfast and taken to Ha Long Bay. Should you wish to arrive a day earlier, we’d be happy to arrange accommodation at the same hotel you will be staying at on your tour. You will need to pay for the extra night but you will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver at no extra cost.

Everything went exactly to plan. How beautiful the Ha Long Bay cruise was. It was scenic, and very peaceful. The meals were absolutely delicious and our cabin was lovely. We sat at our open sliding doors in or room after sunset just to enjoy the tranquillity. All of our guides were lovely and very knowledgeable.

We would recommend Travelbay to anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the tour?

You can pretty much choose any date (subject to availability) and we can usually accommodate everyone including short notice and long term bookings.

Is my departure guaranteed?

Once you have paid for your booking and received confirmation of your travel dates from Travelbay, your holiday is guaranteed on your chosen departure date - except in cases of major weather events and alike in which case we do our best to adjust your holiday accordingly.

How much is the tour?

Travelbay provides 3, 4 and 5 Star pricing options, based on twin share (2 people per room). Please see the pricing at the top of the page.

In most cases triple share is also available at the same per person price. If you would like a single room or if you are a single traveller, please contact us for a quote.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes, of course. Just let us know how many extra nights you would like either before or after and we will arrange for you to stay at the same hotel and let you know the cost of the extra nights.

Arriving early or staying on won't affect your airport transfers - if you're staying at the same hotel and we book it for you, we'll collect you when you arrive and take you to the airport when it's time for your departure flight.

If you want to add on extra tours on your additional days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, we can alter the itinerary for you so that you get exactly what you are after.

We can provide you with a quote for any changes you wish to make.

If you want to add on extra day tours to your free days, click here for a selection of Vietnam day tours.

What is the size of the group?

This tour is a Small Group Tour with a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people.

The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people.

Do you have single traveller pricing?

Yes, please contact us for a quote.

Can we do triple share?

Yes, triple share is available at most hotels.

Do I need any vaccinations?

We recommend you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels. Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam & Cambodia?

It is your responsibility to ensure you have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Vietnam & Cambodia have different requirements depending on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for Vietnam & Cambodia, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas for Vietnam & Cambodia here: Visa Information page.

Please note: We attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Is tipping customary and how much do I tip?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

However, it is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

What is internet access like in Vietnam & Cambodia?

WIFI is common in many hotels in the main tourist areas and big cities as are internet cafes. Internet access is less frequent in the more rural and remote areas of Vietnam & Cambodia, including Ha Long Bay.

Can I use my mobile phone or should I get a local SIM card?

Mobile reception is good in the urban areas and big cities. Mountainous and more remote areas may not have network coverage.

You will need to check with your mobile carrier at home about roaming and charges and make sure global roaming is activated before you leave home.

You can also buy a local SIM when there and use the local network - both for phone calls and mobile data. (This is what we do and find it very easy).

What currency do they use and can I get money out of an ATM?

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong. Both the US Dollar and the Cambodian Riel are accepted in Cambodia.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam and Cambodia. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam & Cambodia to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Is the traffic really scary?

There are lots of scooters in Vietnam and the roads in the main cities are very busy!

The road rules in Vietnam are very different to those in the Western World and because of this some people find it scary. In Vietnam it is more about flow and rhythm and all the traffic moving in the same flow, which then leads to order.

In Vietnam & Cambodia they drive on the right side of the road.

What type of adaptor plug do I need for Vietnam and Cambodia?

A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Travel tip: Take a power board with multiple outlets. This way you can use the one adaptor and plug in multiple devices or electronics.

What happens on arrival?

When you arrive into Vietnam there will be someone waiting for you after you clear customs at the airport with a sign with your name on it. If you can’t see them inside the arrival lounge, they will be waiting just outside the doors. Sometimes they have the Travelbay logo but it is your name that you will most likely notice.

Do I need travel insurance for Vietnam & Cambodia?

Travelbay strongly recommend travel insurance – we are very happy to provide you with a free quote.

Can I contact you?

You most certainly can.

Of course nobody can truly predict the weather – weather is weather and often has its own ideas. However, with all that in mind late February to May and September seem to have the best odds weather wise!

Winter: Winter in Vietnam is from December through to early February. In the North (Hanoi – Ha Long Bay area) it can be cool and Sapa in the hills North of Hanoi can sometimes see snow. In Central Vietnam (Hoi An area) it can be cool-ish and not such great beach weather. In the South (Ho Chi Minh City area) the weather is still warm.

Spring: March – May is a wonderful time to visit Vietnam and the weather will be getting hotter as you head towards the summer months.

Summer: Summer is from June through to August. At this time of year it can be hot, particularly in the South.

Autumn: September – November the temperature is milder but it can rain substantially in the Central parts (around Hoi An) in October and November, particularly November which is the wettest month.

Rainy season: Different parts of the country see rains at different times. In the North the rains come from April to September, in the Central area in October and November and in the South, from May to September.

We have visited Vietnam at many different times of the year and always loved it!

Cambodia

Cambodia lies in the tropics meaning that it is warm to hot year round and the climate is dominated by the alternating wet and dry seasons.

Please note April can be very hot. The rains come in May which tends to cool things down. In August, September and October the rains can be heavy during the day

Dry season: November to May
Wet season: June to October
Peak season: November to December is the peak season for travel in Cambodia.

Interesting facts on Vietnam & Cambodia

Vietnam

  • The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).
  • Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.
  • Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

Cambodia

  • Around half of the population is under 15.
  • It was the Vietnamese who eventually stepped in to help Cambodia oust Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in 1979.
  • Cambodia was a French colony until 1953. Many of the older generation speak French and there is a legacy of French bakeries throughout the country.

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Currency

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - Holiday Information - Currency

The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong and in Cambodia both the US Dollar and Cambodian Riel are accepted.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam and Cambodia to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Shopping

There is some wonderful shopping in Vietnam & Cambodia and you may wish to leave space in your luggage so you can fit your shopping in.

We personally recommend:

  • Visiting a tailor - especially in Hoi An. They make great copies of existing pieces so if you have a favourite, you can bring it with you and have the tailor copy it.
  • Scarf shopping - you can find the most wonderful silk and cashmere scarves in Vietnam. If you like scarves, Vietnam is a great place to build up your collection :)
  • Handicrafts - you'll find great markets and souvenir shops where you can get all sorts of things from jewellery to lacquerware, lanterns, leather goods and much more!

Fabulous trip

We have recently returned from our Vietnam & Cambodia trip. From the very beginning Travelbay were very professional and helpful. Nothing was left to chance, Travelbay were a very professional team. The trip itself was wonderful. It was very well paced, the hotels were great and were in fabulous positions, we saw so much. It also had enough time to relax and enjoy where you were or could do an additional tour. We enjoyed everything about the trip. We were met and taken to each destination by fabulous locals who all spoke very good English. We couldn’t speak highly enough of our experience. e would definitely recommend Travelbay to anyone and have.

Thank you

Just wanted to drop you a quick email to say thank you so much for organising a wonderful tour throughout Vietnam and Cambodia. We all had a great time exploring and seeing the sights both countries had to offer. Ha Long Bay was one of my favourite places! My other favourites were Hoi An I just loved the streets that were filled with lanterns and Siem Reap for the less chaotic roads, beautiful people and Angkor Wat.

The accommodation throughout the tour was excellent! We definitely loved that we had three hotels out of the four with pools given it was so hot. There is nothing better when youve been pounding the streets or after a day trip to come back and have a swim. A special mention to our last hotel in Siem Reap, La Niche DAngkor, which was our favourite. This hotel was in a great position as there was no noisy traffic, the staff were very welcoming, we loved the tranquil gardens with the beautiful pool which was just perfect for relaxing on our final day.

Wed also like to thank all of our tour guides who were excellent!

Ive already been telling people about Travelbay. I know when researching tours, etc its important to read what others experienced and how much they enjoyed it. This is what helped me to choose your company by your great reviews but also by the actual tour itself and what it included. Im sure we will all be reminiscing about this holiday for years to come.

Wonderful Holiday

My husband, Russell and I have just returned from our wonderful holiday in Vietnam and Cambodia. Our four English speaking guides were excellent, they were friendly, organised and knowledgeable. Each pick up and drop off was on time.

The hotels were very good in great locations, especially liked the resort feel in Siem Reap's La Niche. We liked the format of three nights in each place, with equal time of excursions and free time. Also really enjoyed the Ha Long Bay cruise.

Please could you pass on these compliments to the Vietnamese company, and express our gratitude as well.
