Travelbay Tip: Day 1 of this tour is the day you arrive. Many people whose flights arrive in the evening, choose to arrive a day earlier to give themselves time to settle in and see a bit of Hanoi. Should you wish to arrive a day earlier, we’d be happy to arrange accommodation at the same hotel you will be staying at on your tour. You will need to pay for the extra night, but you will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver at no extra cost. There are many things to see and do in and around Hanoi. See here for more information about day tours.

* Price includes night train from Hanoi to Dong Hoi within Vietnam, 10 nights' accommodation, 1 night on a private junk boat, transfers, guides, 24 meals and more. Price does not include international flights from your place of origin to and from Vietnam.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Hanoi are approximately $900-$1100 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Popular with the Vietnamese, take advantage of the many street food stalls and have a mid-morning snack or something to drink. Continue your trip to Hanoi Railway Station, one of the first railway stations to be built in Vietnam and opened in 1902.

Your guide will then drive you to the exquisite Van Mieu, also known as The Temple of Literature. Over 1000 years old the temple is tucked away from the bustle of the city. Enjoy lunch at the nearby KOTO restaurant, a social enterprise that was set up to train at-risk and disadvantaged youths in cooking.

In the afternoon visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the final resting place and monument of the former Vietnamese leader.

Finish your day with a cool drink watching the world go by on Ngoc Ha Street

Day 3:  Pu Luong Nature Reserve and the River Cham

Today you will be collected from your hotel and driven to Pu Luong Nature Reserve (around 4 hours). Discover the natural beauty of this spot, almost unheard of by foreign travellers until recently, and considered one of the friendliest spots in Vietnam - don't be surprised if you are invited into a villager's home for a refreshment :)

Arrive at the Reserve in time for lunch, unpack your bags and settle in before the afternoon's activities begin.

Later your guide will drive you to the suspension bridge over Cham River. Set off by foot and discover how the water is moved from the river using handmade bamboo water wheels and aqueducts until you reach a local fisherman’s house. Here you can stop and rest for a while and prepare for your rafting adventure with Mr. Dinh and his team.

As you float along the calm waters of the river, enjoy the views, perhaps even have a go at steering your handcrafted raft - the guides will be happy to show you the ropes.

The walk to the fisherman’s house is an easy walk (around 1.5 hours). If you prefer not to walk it can be arranged with your guide for you to travel by car. The rafting covers a distance of 2 km on gentle water (around 1.5 hours).

Arrive at Tan Lap bridge where your guide will meet you to take you back to the retreat for dinner.

Meet the villagers and learn all about their daily life - they will be more than happy to share their skills and local culture with you. If you need help conversing, your guide will be happy to help.

The trek ends at the base of the valley where a car will be waiting to take you back to the Retreat in time for lunch.

Check out and head to Ninh Binh for your overnight stay

If you prefer not to take a bike you can be driven by car - the use of driver and accompanying car will be at your disposal for the whole day.

After breakfast, you will be collected and driven to Ben Binh Harbour to catch your speed boat to the town on Cat Ba Island (45 minute ride). Once you have disembarked there is a short car transfer to Ben Beo pier where you will continue cruising by boat through the most scenic areas of the bay to Viet Hai pier. Here you can take a bike or be driven by motorbike to the Viet Hai Village (around 30 minutes). The whole journey will take approximately 2.5 hours arriving at the Village in time for lunch.

Day 7: Cruise the waters of Lan Ha Bay by Private Junk Boat

As you cruise the limestone waters, pass by a floating village. Have lunch on board and carry on taking in the surrounding area of Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay

Kayak through the narrow lagoons and tunnel caves of Hang Ca (the Bat Cave) and cruise to the Bai Trai Dao beaches where you are free to spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Take a swim or relax on board as you watch the sunset over the bay.

Dinner will be served on board as you anchor down for a peaceful night set amongst an incredibly beautiful backdrop.

Day 8: The wonders of Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island

Wake up and watch the sun rise over the bay before breakfast.

Today the boat explores some other parts of the bay, visiting a floating fish farm where you can learn about how the local people make their living.

Continue cruising the bay and its beautiful surroundings, stopping for a swim in the waters before disembarking the boat around mid morning at Cat Ba.

Here you will have a couple of hours free to look around the town, beaches and local market at your own pace.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before taking the boat from Cat Ba to Hai Phong for your drive back to Hanoi.

After a short rest, you will be taken to the train station for your overnight train to Dong Hoi.

Travelbay Vietnam Tours - 13 Day Off the Beaten Track

How to get there:
This tour starts in Hanoi and ends in Hoi An. The closest airport to Hoi An is Da Nang which is around a 40 minute drive.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit and use their trip calculator.

To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

You can apply for your visa either online, by post or in person at the embassy or consulate.

To apply online, please click on the following link and you will need to upload your passport photo and passport:

To apply by post and obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam Embassy you can click here for instructions and more information. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2017, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $99 and a one month multiple entry visa $140 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at time it can take a few attempts to get through.

Important Information in relation to Vietnam Visa Approval letters

We do not approve of or support 3rd party Vietnam Approval Letters for the following reason:

  • Vietnam Approval Letters are NOT Vietnam Visas.
  • There have been many reports of fake letters and fake companies providing letters. The Vietnam Embassy have issued warnings in this regard.
  • Even if you get a genuine letter on arrival in Vietnam you have to take your letter to a counter, queue up (sometimes for as long as an hour), pay a fee and get your Visa BEFORE you can pass through immigration – this can cause quite long delays at a time you would not want one.
  • We recommend that you obtain your Vietnam Visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnam Consulate in Sydney prior to departure – this is very quick and simple and can be done by post.
  • Should you urgently need a letter and for some reason cannot obtain a visa prior to departure such as due to short notice, our colleagues in Vietnam can obtain a legitimate approval letter for you, but you will of course still have to go through the queue process on arrival in Vietnam.

If you decide to go to a 3rd party to obtain a Vietnam Visa letter we cannot take any responsibility for the consequences should you not be able to gain entry to Vietnam or experience delays.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

From our personal experience we found the best exchange rate was on taking AUD into a bank and exchanging for dong. Please keep in mind that banks are closed on weekends.

Bank fees are around $10 each time you withdraw cash at an ATM and the maximum you can withdraw at any one time is 3,000,000 dong (approximately $175 as at March 2018). It is likely you would need to withdraw a few times over your holiday depending on your needs.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides
A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you.

Tour guides will not generally join you when eating – you are welcome to invite them though if you feel to.

Vaccination information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

    Peak season:
Vietnam is a popular destination all year round. The peak seasons for travel are from November to March and July to August.

The Lunar/Chinese New Year is a time when Vietnam all but comes to a standstill. Most people go home to their families and travel during this time is not recommended. The dates for the New Year change each year but usually it is in late January to February. Please note – we do not sell tours nor recommend travelling during this time.

Other dates to note include the following:

    • 24 April: Huna King Commemoration Day – this is celebrated in the Ninh Binh Province only
    • 30 April: Reunification Day – This day commemorates the soldiers who died in war during the 1800s and 1900s.
    • 2 September: National Independence Day – There are celebrations and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
    • 4 October: Mid-Autumn Festival – Adults and children take to the streets to celebrate and float lanterns in the rivers and lakes. The Old Quarter in Hanoi and the Old Town of Hoi An are generally crowded.
    • 31 December – New Year’s Eve – January 1 is a public holiday and many people celebrate.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

Delays can be experienced in obtaining a passport or visa, so you are advised to apply in plenty of time. We accept no responsibility in any regard in relation to customers who are denied entry to a country because they do not possess the correct travel documents.
      • It is also your responsibility to ensure that you hold a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your date of return. If you hold multiple passports, you may be required to present your passport of residence on departing that country. If you hold a passport for a country to which you are travelling, you may be obliged to produce that passport on entering the country. Accordingly, you could be obliged to carry more than one passport when travelling overseas. You should make your own enquiries in relation to your specific circumstances and requirements.
      • It is your responsibility to ensure that all your details are recorded correctly. Any request for a name change after documents have been issued may incur amendment fees or result in the original booking being cancelled and in the case of airlines, the loss of a seat.
      • When purchasing flights, cruises and other carriage and travel services, the name on the passport must match the name on the ticket otherwise you may not be able to travel and insurance may be invalid. If, after purchasing products or services but before traveling, any member of your party changes their name you must notify the relevant carrier, or us, immediately so that the necessary changes can be made to your documentation. You may incur a fee.
