ITINERARY

Hanoi - Ha Long Bay - Da Nang - Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City: 11 days

Vietnam is a fascinating and beautiful country with a rich history and culture. This together with the natural beauty, lovely people and delicious cuisine make it a wonderful holiday destination - and one of our favourite places.

Travelbay Tip: Day 1 of this tour is the day you arrive. Many people whose flights arrive in the evening, choose to arrive a day earlier to give themselves time to settle in and see a bit of Hanoi, as on the morning of Day 2 you will be collected after breakfast and taken to Ha Long Bay. Should you wish to arrive a day earlier, we’d be happy to arrange accommodation at the same hotel you will be staying at on your tour. You will need to pay for the extra night, but you will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver at no extra cost. There are many things to see and do in and around Hanoi. See here for more information about day tours.

* Price includes 2 domestic flights, 10 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 16 meals and more. Price does not include international return flights to Vietnam.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Ho Chi Minh City are approximately $900-$1100 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

We also offer many other tours to Vietnam as well as private and custom tours of Vietnam. Please contact us for more information.

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi you will be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Enjoy the rich culture of this energetic city. With a mix of Chinese, French and South East Asian influences, there is a grace woven into everyday life that is unique and is a delight to explore.

You will be provided with a kit containing a detailed itinerary, tickets, a mobile phone with a local SIM card, and a gift voucher for a tailor made item of clothing while you are in Hoi An.

Overnight in Hanoi: Flower Hotel - Superior room (3 star); Chalcedony Hotel - Deluxe room (4 Star); Sheraton Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe room (5 Star)

Day 2: Cruise the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay

After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel for a drive through rice paddy fields to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay. Translated as “where the dragon descends into the sea” you will experience the magic and wonder of nature. Take a cruise on a junk boat among the hundreds of limestone peaks topped in rainforest rising from the emerald waters. After lunch you can visit a grotto of gigantic stalactites and stalagmites. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove. In the late evening you will drop anchor for an overnight stay on the Junk Cruise.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. There would not be enough room to accommodate everyone’s luggage gracefully. You will be leaving from and returning to the same hotel in Hanoi where you can safely store your remaining luggage.

Overnight Ha Long Bay Junk Cruise: Lavender Cruise - Deluxe room (3 Star); Glory Legend Cruise - Deluxe room (4 Star); Huong Hai Sealife Cruise - Suite (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: A leisurely cruise in Ha Long Bay and travel back to Hanoi

Spend the morning at your leisure – sit back and enjoy this unique landscape or take a swim. After lunch return to Hanoi where you will be taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Hanoi: Flower Hotel - Superior room (3 star); Chalcedony Hotel - Deluxe room (4 Star); Sheraton Hanoi Hotel - Deluxe room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: A city tour of Hanoi and fly to Da Nang

After breakfast you will be collected for a tour of Hanoi. Visit the historic complex of Ba Dinh including Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, and One-Pillar Pagoda - an ancient Buddhist pagoda, and one of Vietnam's most iconic, supported by only one pillar and resembling a lotus blossom. You will also visit Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Glam, the first imperial school in Vietnam built in 1070.

Note: Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum is closed on Monday & Friday and from 5th September to 5th November for annual maintenance.

In the afternoon you will be taken to the airport in time for your flight to Da Nang. On arrival at Da Nang you will be taken to your hotel.

Overnight in Da Nang: Titan Da Nang Hotel - Deluxe room (3 Star); Vanda Da Nang Hotel - Superior room (4 Star); Grand Mercure Da Nang - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5: Take a guided tour to My Son – a world heritage site and ancient holy land

After breakfast you will be collected to visit the World Heritage site My Son.  My Son translates to "Beautiful Mountain" and was a religious, political and intellectual centre of the Cham people from the 7th to the 13th centuries. Set in a lush jungle, it is considered to be amongst the greatest archaeological sites of South East Asia.

Spend the afternoon at your leisure in Da Nang

Overnight in Da Nang: Titan Da Nang Hotel - Deluxe room (3 Star); Vanda Da Nang Hotel - Superior room (4 Star); Grand Mercure Da Nang - Superior Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6: Discover the grace and charm of Hoi An

This morning you will be transferred to Hoi An. Discover the grace of this well preserved ancient town and the friendly nature of the locals. A culinary mecca with a laid-back feel, the old-town character of Hoi An is a delight (and the shopping is fantastic!).

You will be taken to Ann Tailor at 09 Phan Chu Trinh Street, Hoi An Town where you will receive a gift voucher for use towards a tailor-made item of clothing. Please do not feel obliged to use it. Hoi An has hundreds of tailors - feel into which one is best for you.

In the afternoon take a guided walking tour of Hoi An - one of the best ways to take in the city's charm. The unique atmosphere here combines elements of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese culture. Some of the most remarkable views of the city are from the ancient houses and from here, visitors can catch a glimpse of a long gone past and more subdued and simple time.

The tour includes visits to Hoi An Museum, many of the town’s renowned Ancient Houses which boast remarkable architecture, Assembly Halls of Chinese influence, a handicraft workshop and of course the must-see Japanese Covered Bridge. An optional stop is at the private home of Diep Dong Nguyen (subject to availability) to view a stunning collection of pottery and old Hoi An photographs.

Overnight in Hoi An: Hoi An Village Villa (3 Star); Agribank Resort - Superior Room (4 Star); Sunrise Hoi An Resort - Deluxe Garden View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7: Enjoy a food tour in Hoi An

Discover Hoi An’s countryside and its local foods by bicycle. Start the tour in the countryside and stop to enjoy a bowl of Cao Lau. Cao Lau is a traditional Hoi An specialty composed of local noodles, pork, fresh vegetables and rice paper. The noodles are made with local sticky rice soaked in the water that must be taken from Ba Le Well. You will have time to visit with a local family and try to make special cakes (white roses), and have the opportunity to enjoy them. Before the end of the tour, you will visit Cam Nam to enjoy the Yin and Yang food. This tour is a great way to explore the culinary side of Hoi An as well as getting to know some of the friendly local people.

Please note: During the foodie tour you will cycle to a small village (about 20 mins by bicycle). There are some main road and village paths to cycle on but not in heavy traffic. The roads are flat and not rough. If you would prefer to do the tour by other means there is the option to go by pedicab - a pedicab is similar to a rickshaw (USD25 per person), car (USD20 per group) or motorbike (with driver) (USD15 per person).

Overnight in Hoi An: Hoi An Village Villa (3 Star); Agribank Resort - Superior Room (4 Star); Sunrise Hoi An Resort - Deluxe Garden View (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 8: Travel to Ho Chi Minh City

Today you will be transferred to Da Nang for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City where you will be taken to your hotel. Spend the evening at leisure in Ho Chi Minh City. A bustling mix of commerce and culture where food stalls and French architecture line the streets – Ho Chi Minh City has plenty to explore. A mix of temples and skyscrapers, it is a real blend of the ancient and the modern.

If you would like the option of visiting Hue on day 8, we can arrange this for you. There will be a surcharge of USD 102 per person (minimum of 2 people) as your flight to Ho Chi Minh City will depart from Hue instead of Da Nang. You can read more about this option here.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Hoang Ngan Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Vissai Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Eastin Grand Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)*

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 9: The floating markets of the Mekong Delta

After breakfast you will be collected for a tour of the Mekong Delta. The 2 hour bus ride is an opportunity to not only enjoy the scenery of rice green paddy fields, but also to gain an insight into daily life in Vietnam. Enjoy a cruise to visit the Cai Be Floating Market where you can watch the locals trade their fresh goods and commodities from their small boats. Stop over at a local house where you can see how they make coconut candy, rice-paper, rice-pop corn and rice wine. Leave Cai Be for Binh Hoa Phuoc Islet where the maze of shady creeks will surely fascinate you. You will have a chance to spend time amidst the local farmers, enjoying traditional music and tropical fruits. Experience a traditional lunch at a local home before returning to Ho Chi Minh City.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Hoang Ngan Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Vissai Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Eastin Grand Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)*

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 10: Adventure through the Cu Chi Tunnels and enjoy a tour of Saigon

Today you will visit the Cu Chi Tunnels for a half day tour. The tunnels were an underground network constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the Vietnam War. They took about 25 years to build, parts of which have several stories and spanned around 250km. With living rooms, kitchens, hospitals, weapons factories, storage facilities and a command centre, it is an impressive underground city. It enabled the Vietcong to move around the countryside undetected by the Americans and housed around 10,000 who lived underground for several years. Explore this underground city that played a big part in the Vietnam War.

In the afternoon, visit some of the other major attractions in Ho Chi Minh City: the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Hoang Ngan Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Vissai Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Eastin Grand Hotel - Superior Room (5 Star)*

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 11: Time to go home

Today is a day free at leisure in Ho Chi Minh City before your departure. You will be collected 3 hours prior to your flight and taken to the airport.

Meals included: Breakfast

*If you would like to upgrade to a more centrally located hotel in Ho Chi Minh City please let us know as this can be arranged for a surcharge of USD$35 per room per night for 4 Star option and USD$65 per room per night for the 5 star option.

Note: Whilst many excursions are included in this tour, they are of course not compulsory should you at some point wish to take time off - please let your tour operator know and note that we are not able to provide any refunds.

Travelbay Tip:

This 11 Day Vietnam and Cambodia tour begins in Hanoi. Many of our customers love to add a very special 3 day tour to Sapa onto the beginning of it. The Sapa tour departs from Hanoi on any day of your choosing (subject to availability) so this fits perfectly.

Travelbay - Vietnam 11 Days

How to get there:
This tour starts in Hanoi and ends in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
Most nationalities require a visa when travelling to Vietnam. You need to apply for and receive your visa before you leave Australia. This can be done up to 6 months in advance.

It is best to obtain your visa directly from the Vietnam embassy. We have always found them to be very quick and reliable.

You can find the Embassy instructions and more information here.

You can download the application form here.

Generally the following information is required:

  • Personal details.
  • One passport photo taken within the last year.
  • Your estimated dates of arrival into and exit from Vietnam.  Make sure you do not estimate or put a date later than you actually arrive.
  • Whether you want a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
    • Please note: if you are to exit and re-enter Vietnam on the same trip, you will need a multiple entry visa. For example, if you are doing a Vietnam & Cambodia tour and then going back to Vietnam (even if only for a night), you will need a multiple entry visa.
  • Address you will stay at in Vietnam – it is fine to put your initial hotel/place of stay.

Once you have completed the application form you will need to post this to the Vietnamese Embassy along with the following:

  • A valid passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the time of your return to Australia.
  • A return self-addressed prepaid envelope – we recommend registered or express post envelopes for both sending and receiving so you can track delivery
  • Visa fee. You can pay by post office money order or bank cheque. Please contact the embassy for the latest rates as these can change. Last time we checked in 2017, a single entry visa from the Vietnamese embassy was $95. A one month multiple entry visa $120 and a three month multiple entry visa $150 – we always check before we send our forms.
  • If 2 of you are travelling together you can post your passports together with the one money order.

The normal processing time is 3 working days once received by the embassy, but post seems a bit slow these days. Therefore, we recommend leaving a minimum of 10 working days, but why not do it even sooner! An express service is possible and will need to be arranged directly with the embassy.

You can also apply in person at the Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnamese Consulate in Edgecliff, Sydney.

For more information or questions please ring the embassy – they are very helpful but at time it can take a few attempts to get through.

Important Information in relation to Vietnam Visa Approval letters

We do not approve of or support 3rd party Vietnam Approval Letters for the following reason:

  • Vietnam Approval Letters are NOT Vietnam Visas.
  • There have been many reports of fake letters and fake companies providing letters. The Vietnam Embassy have issued warnings in this regard.
  • Even if you get a genuine letter on arrival in Vietnam you have to take your letter to a counter, queue up (sometimes for as long as an hour), pay a fee and get your Visa BEFORE you can pass through immigration – this can cause quite long delays at a time you would not want one.
  • We recommend that you obtain your Vietnam Visa through the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra or the Vietnam Consulate in Sydney prior to departure – this is very quick and simple and can be done by post.
  • Should you urgently need a letter and for some reason cannot obtain a visa prior to departure such as due to short notice, our colleagues in Vietnam can obtain a legitimate approval letter for you, but you will of course still have to go through the queue process on arrival in Vietnam.

If you decide to go to a 3rd party to obtain a Vietnam Visa letter we cannot take any responsibility for the consequences should you not be able to gain entry to Vietnam or experience delays.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:

A few customers have asked us about tipping. Really this is a personal matter, not obligatory and at your discretion.

Some like to provide the tour guide with a few dollars a day and a little less for the driver. If you love your guide you can of course offer more – it really is up to you. Tour guides will not generally join you when eating. If you would like your guide to join you, you will need to invite them.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Climate:
Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

Peak Season: November to March and July to August.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.
