ITINERARY

Hanoi - Ha Long Bay - Hue - Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City: 11 days

Vietnam is a beautiful country in many ways - the natural beauty, lovely people, delicious food and interesting history make it a wonderful holiday destination - it is one of our favourite places.

This holiday takes you to the highlights of Vietnam and gives you a taste of the North, South and what lies in between. With centrally located hotels, you can step out and see the best of each location and with your friendly guides and drivers, see what this country has to offer.

Travelbay Tip: Should you wish to extend your holiday with extra nights at the start and/or end of your tour, we’d be happy to arrange extra accommodation for you at the same hotel as you will be staying at during the tour. You will need to pay for the extra night(s), but will still be collected on arrival by the tour guide/driver and taken to the airport in time for your flight home at no extra cost. See here for more information about day tours.

This is a Small Group Tour with your own guide, driver and a maximum of 10 people. Often the groups are smaller but there will be no more than 10 people. The exception to this is your pick up and cruise in Ha Long Bay which is managed by the cruise company and will include more people. If you would like to make the tour a Private Tour, please contact us for a quote. We also offer Tailor Made Tours to Vietnam.

* Price includes 2 domestic flights, 10 nights' accommodation, transfers, guides, 15 meals and more. Price does not include international return flights to Vietnam.

We would be happy to provide you with a quote for international flights. Flights from Australia to Ho Chi Minh City are approximately $900-$1100 per person return. The actual price varies depending on departure city, time of year and luck of the draw!

Take a cruise on a junk boat among the hundreds of limestone peaks topped in rainforest rising from the emerald waters. After lunch you can visit a grotto of gigantic stalactites and stalagmites. Along the way, anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove. In the late evening you will drop anchor for an overnight stay on the Junk Cruise.

Note: Please bring an overnight bag with you, because you will not be able to (or want to) take all your luggage with you on the Ha Long Bay excursion and cruise. On arrival in Hoi An you will be taken to your hotel for check in. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure in the lovely town of Hoi An.

If you plan on getting something made at one of the many tailors, it is a good idea to go on your first day so that you can go back for fittings to make sure your items are exactly as you want them. Click here for a short video of Nicola at the tailor getting some skirts made.

Today is a day to experience the local life and cuisine of Hoi An.

Begin with a trip to the local markets - the morning time is when they are at their peak. Your guide can give you some bargaining tips as well as explain the ingredients that you will buy for your cooking class.

Next, head to the water and hop into a coracle - a traditional round boat where you can paddle on the canals of the Bay Mau Nipa Forest. This is a great fun!

Your guide will show you the folk game “bit mat dap nieu”. Then take a short break with local tea before your cooking class with the local chefs. The chefs will teach you how to cook Vietnamese foods and after you can enjoy your self-made lunch.

Then relax on a sightseeing tour on the Thu Bon River by boat before being taken back to your hotel around 3pm.

Overnight in Hoi An: Kim An Hotel - Superior Room (3 Star); Belle Maison Hadana Hotel - Deluxe Balcony Room (4 Star); Royal Hoi An Hotel - Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Day 9: Adventure through the Cu Chi Tunnels

Today you will visit the Cu Chi Tunnels - a network of tunnels stretching over 250 km and one of the most famous and historical aspects of the Vietnam War. The tunnel system was created in 1948 to assist the Viet Minh as they fought the French for independence. Digging and building of tunnels continued over the next 25 years until it was an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centres. The tunnels could house thousands of people who lived almost entirely underground for years. There, people led relatively ‘normal’ lives, which included getting married and raising children. During the American War, the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a free fire zone which meant it was therefore heavily attacked and bombed.

Sections of the tunnels are now open for visitors. It is a fascinating insight into the lives of the local Vietnamese during the American/Vietnam War as well as the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Vietnamese.

For those who are interested, there is an opportunity to fire off rounds from a war era M16 or AK47 at the nearby firing range. This activity is optional and fees for this are not included.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Le Duy - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Majestic Hotel - Colonial Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 10: Visit Cai Be and the Floating Markets in the Mekong Delta

Depart early this morning (around 7.30am) to arrive at the Cai Be Floating Market around 10am. Along the way stop in the town of Tan An that overlooks the picturesque flat rice fields.

On arrival in Cai Be, set off by motor boat to visit the Cai Be Floating Market and watch the locals trading fruit and many other commodities on board their vessels. Visit a small family business to see how coconut candy and crispy rice popcorn are made. Then wander into the small villages to visit the orchard and fruit plantation, accompanied by traditional southern Vietnamese folk music.

Keep cruising to a series of small canals to experience the charms of the Upper Mekong Delta. Arrive in Tan Phong island where you can join to a cooking class and learn how to prepare special Vietnamese dishes. Enjoy your self-made lunch along with fresh river food served in the garden. After lunch you may like to relax in the hammocks.

In the afternoon, you can cycle around the village path with fruit orchards and bonsai garden. Meet the local islanders to learn more about the local daily life in the Mekong delta.

At around 3pm, take a boat ride back to Cai Be where your driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City: Le Duy - Deluxe Room (3 Star); Harmony Saigon Hotel - Deluxe Room (4 Star); Majestic Hotel - Colonial Deluxe Room (5 Star)

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 11: Time to go home or onto your next adventure

Today is a day free at leisure in Ho Chi Minh City before your departure. You will be collected 3 hours prior to your flight and taken to the airport.

Meals included: Breakfast

All accommodation and hotels are subject to change. If the stated hotel is not available a hotel of a similar standard and location will be booked.

We like to leave a little bit of space in the itinerary for leisure and people to do their own thing. However, if you would like to participate in more tours or excursions during your leisure time, you can find a sample of what is available here. Please note you will need to pay for any additional tours you choose to book that are not part of the existing itinerary. We can provide you with a quote.

How to get there:
This tour starts in Hanoi and ends in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Travelbay works together with an excellent corporate flight booking company and is happy to provide you with a quote and organise your flights. We charge a $50 booking fee for this service. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange flights yourself you can find more information and suggestions here.

If you are wanting to know more about how far it is between destinations and how long your flight will take, you can visit www.travelmath.com and use their trip calculator.

Timezones:
To help you calculate the time difference we recommend World Time Buddy.

Visa information:
If a visa is required for any country you are visiting it is each travellers responsibility to ensure they have obtained a valid visa prior to travel. Every country has different requirements and it also depends on the nationality of the passport you are travelling on.

To find out the visa requirements for your destination, you can check here with Visalink.

If a visa is required you can use the services on the same link, or you may wish to apply directly yourself.

In addition to the above link, we have provided some more information on visas here: Visa Information page

Please note: Every country has different visa requirements and charges. To support we attempt to provide you with the latest information and links. However, please be aware that it is each traveller’s responsibility (and not Travelbay’s) to ensure that you have a valid visa if required for any country you visit.

Currency information:
The currency used in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong.

What currency to take over there is a personal choice. Some people prefer to take US$ cash as a backup whilst others prefer to take AUD$ cash – it depends on what you are comfortable with. There are ATM machines readily available in Vietnam. Occasionally the older ATM's do not accept Australian debit cards and you may need to try a different ATM.

From our personal experience we found the best exchange rate was on taking AUD into a bank and exchanging for dong. Please keep in mind that banks are closed on weekends.

Bank fees are around $10 each time you withdraw cash at an ATM and the maximum you can withdraw at any one time is 3,000,000 dong (approximately $175 as at March 2018). It is likely you would need to withdraw a few times over your holiday depending on your needs.

We recommend letting your bank know that you will be using your card in Vietnam to avoid them freezing any 'suspicious' activity.

Tipping and Tour Guides:
Tipping is entirely at your discretion.

In response to some customers questions here are a few guidelines:

It is usual to tip the guides, drivers, porters and waiters.

Tipping is not necessary for taxis or for cheaper restaurants. Remember, it’s a good idea to check if service charges are included in your restaurant bill. If not, a tip of 10% of the total bill is normal.

Below are a few general guidelines to support you with tipping, however please be aware that tipping is a sign of gratification for good service, and therefore view the guidelines as the middle ground, which can be adjusted depending on the level of service you feel you have received.

  • Guides: USD 3-5 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 2-3 per person per day

You may wish to check if you will have the same guide and driver for the duration of your time in one location and tip them on your last day with them.

Tipping tip: It can be handy to have small notes for tipping.

Vaccination Information:
Travelbay recommends you check with your doctor as to any immunisations that you may require or that are recommended for your travels.  Alternatively, you can visit The Travel Doctor or Travelvax for more information.

Electricity and Adaptors
A useful resource to find out what plug or adaptor you might need for any country can be found by clicking here: https://whatplug.info/to/ and then selecting the country or countries you are visiting.

Climate:
Many people ask us about the weather in Vietnam.

There is not one simple answer so we have prepared a more detailed reply which you can find here.

Dry season: Generally November to March (with some regional variations).
Wet season: May to October (with some regional variations).

Peak Season: November to March and July to August.

    Population: 93.5 million

    Language: Vietnamese

Predominant religion: 81% of the population has no religion followed by 9% Buddhist

    Some interesting facts:
The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word making the language somewhat difficult to learn (but English is widely spoken and the friendly locals are more than happy to help you with your Vietnamese pronunciation).

Vietnam is one of the world’s last surviving one-party Communist states.

Around 70% of the 93 million plus people that live in Vietnam, live in the countryside and over half the population are under 25.

      Excellent

We found the organisation excellent. All the guides were very prompt, well informed and helpful. Generally the hotels were good. We particularly found the Hanoi Hotel, (Hanoi Pearl) very good with pleasant helpful staff and very well located just around the corner from the lake. The Athena Elegance was good too especially as we had a balcony. In Hue (Eldora Hotel) the hotel room was excellent. We would have like another day there. The hotel and staff were very good in Hoi An,(Belle Maison Hadana). I loved the pool and atmosphere around it. They had a Vietnamese feast one evening which we liked. The excursion (additional day trip) I liked the best was our trip to Ninh Binh, a really great day visiting a monastery and then the wonderful row boat ride through tunnels.

      Thank you Ladies

Thank You Ladies, I just wanted to say what a great time we had in Vietnam! We were so glad that we booked with you all. We had a great experience for our first time there. We had some wonderful guides and became friends with them all. One of our girls even went out of her way, she wanted to come back in the night and have a drink with us! She took us to a rooftop bar that we would never have found and we had a great night listening to a band! My husband loved it. We tried lots of traditional things including egg coffee, fruit, Bun Cha and lots of other things! Overall we had many great days with the tours always on time and great hotels! Thank you all so much for our amazing adventure!

      The tour was fantastic

The Vietnam 11 day tour was fantastic and everyone had a great time. It really is a well put together great value for money package where you are able to explore a lot of Vietnam with the tours and still have enough chill time.

The boys highlights were the kayaking in Ha Long Bay and the bicycle foodie tour in Hoi An. The boys are fussy eaters but couldn't get enough of the variety of the Vietnam food and tried absolutely everything. The food just kept coming on the Ha Long Bay Cruise and we all loved the various opportunities at the short cooking lessons along the other destinations.

The adults liked best the Ha Long Bay cruise, a great relaxing start to the holiday and Hoi An where we could have easily spent longer. The old town and the lanterns at night are truly spectacular.

The 3 and 4 star hotels we stayed at were all really good and you could not fault there locations. The staff at all the hotels were so welcoming, engaging and accommodating.

Sincere thanks to the Travelbay Team for putting this memorable family tour together for us. Your organisation skills are second to none.
